See again "expecting a trap clue because it's happened before."
Are you starting to keep track? That's one where the "obvious" answer is the correct one.
One where it was, and 837,495 where it wasn't.

Saw this Idiotest on someone's Facebook. I am totally stumped. I know there's some kind of trick, but can't figure out what it is.

No, not even close. Seriously, start keeping track now, the obvious answer will still be right more often.

That's one where it is, zero where it isn't.

That means nothing. Lots and lots and lots of $200 boxes have been stand and stares.

So were there any TOMs in that colorful places category, or did you just have to know these obscure places?

Remember that you only had to respond with states. The ones I got weren’t because I really knew the places in the clues, but because I had heard of them at some point, in a context where the state name followed. I don’t know Silver Spring per se, but my brain went, “Silver Spring, ...Maryland?” at the first clue. It was like being spotted several words of a phrase that I don’t truly know, but the spots give me enough that I can pull the missing words from somewhere in my memory (which also can occur when I’m watching J!).

That seems like a very poor way to handle a category. Just randomly guess because you kinda sorta vaguely remember some phrase way in the back of your mind.

There’s no way memory is that precarious for you. Haven’t you ever successfully sung along, word for word and note for note, with a song you haven’t so much as thought about for years? With the right cues, sometimes you just know you know something without having a solid answer for how you know (or still know, in the case of the song example). “Silver Spring, Maryland”/“Silver Spring, MD” jibed with the shape (of the writing), sound (of the words), and feel (of speaking them) that crystallized in my mind when presented with “Silver Spring” and the imaginary blank I gave it to fill.

I am shocked a trivia show would expect you to know something without giving you a hint. I can't imagine it will last long.
