OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Big surprise ending on yesterday's program, of course. Manny winning with $1 only. There's nobody on the Jeopardy! staff who can recall the last time that happened. But he earned the right to come back and play again today. And today we are happy to welcome Chelsea and Joanna. And I wish you all good luck as we go into the Jeopardy! Round. Let's take a look at the categories, shall we?

Chelsea: $2,200
Manny: $1,400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Music plays a very important part in the lives of our two challenges on the program today. Chelsea Feltman is an opera singer and actor from Brooklyn who taught music in Tanzania?

Chelsea: Yes, I did for four summers.

Alex: Ah, that sounds exciting. Were you teaching opera?

Chelsea: I was teaching kind of general using your voice for people that haven't done it before, as well as dance and drama, so it was great.

Alex: And what did you learn about their music while you were there?

Chelsea: That they have incredible, incredible polyrhythms that come naturally, that we--we don't have in Western music. And it's beautiful, it's amazing.

Alex: Yeah. Okay.

Alex: Joanna Kimmitt from Long Beach is a librarian, but won a concerto composition once.

Joanna: Yes. In my previous career, I was a classical musician.

Alex: I thought you were gonna say, "My previous life."

Joanna: No. Well, it feels like one sometimes.

Alex: Really?

Joanna: But yes, I played the flute, and I won a competition in Texas and got to play in Leipzig on the big stage at the Gewandhaus. It was a thrill.

Alex: Okay. Great.

Alex: Manny Abell. How surprised were you at the end of yesterday's program?

Manny: Incredibly surprised.

Alex: You had figured that, "Hey, I'm gone," right?

Manny: Right. I was ready to walk off into the sunset and take my winnings and go home.

Alex: Okay.

BOOK-POURRI $1000: Saul Bellow's "Adventures of" this character follows a poor Jewish kid growing up in Chicago in the Depression

Manny: $19,000
Joanna: $9,600
Chelsea: $9,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
HISTORIC CONNECTIONS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Manny: Wager $201 to cover Joanna, but no more than $599 so as not to fall behind Chelsea's doubled score.
Joanna: You have the hope of surpassing Manny if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $9,401 to force Manny to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Chelsea.
Chelsea: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A 1796 medical experiment with an English farm girl ultimately led to this breakthrough announced in Geneva May 8, 1980

FINAL SCORES
Chelsea: $9,200 - $401 = $8,799 (What is the chickenpox vaccine?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Joanna: $9,600 + $399 = $9,999 (What is the eradication of smallpox?) (New champion: $9,999)
Manny: $19,000 - $17,000 = $2,000 (What is in-vitro?) (3rd place: $1,000)

Alex’s suit & tie today was the one he wore for saying the Ken Jennings remark about Austin in the S34 promo.

I went London Eye for the Millennium Wheel and know I don’t have to check with the judges for that one.

CHUCK BERRY $200: Chuck was born in this Missouri city in 1926 & passed away nearby in 2017

Where’s my hand-holding hint, writers? It could literally be any city! How am I supposed to know? Oh, that’s right. It’s first box. What is St. Louis for +$200 on my scoresheet.

DD1 was a nasty trap hiding a sports clue in BOOK-POURRI and that was the start of Chelsea going 0/3 on big clues.

The FJ! was another of those no chance Marktiple Choices for me as I was looking at cloning and human genome project on my paper. Some of the previous Archive hits show how I should have been able to figure it out in 30 seconds:

#6894, aired 2014-07-31 MEDICAL HISTORY $400: In 1980 this medical organization, the W.H.O., announced that smallpox had been eradicated worldwide
#5855, aired 2010-02-12 MICROBIOLOGY MILESTONES $1,000 (Daily Double): By 1980 a global vaccination effort led to the virtual eradication of this, the only time that's been done to a germ
#4662, aired 2004-12-07 LET'S GET SMALL $200: In 1980 the World Heath Organization announced the eradication of this viral disease
#1887, aired 1992-11-17 HEALTH & MEDICINE $1,500 (Daily Double): Due to successful vaccines, this viral disease was finally declared extinct in 1980

There is no way Manny could have felt HISTORIC CONNECTIONS was some kind of wheelhouse. He went for a GBOGH (go big or go home) and will do the latter. Ouch for him and a nice gift for Joanna. That is not the standard way to make a sole solve of the FJ! clue pay off.

I guessed heart transplant on FJ. If the date in the clue was from the 1970s I maybe would have gotten it.

I think Manny would admit that it was a pretty crazy bad wager. And odd given his fairly conservative approach up until now. Maybe he was shipping out in the morning? :) It's been a strange start to this season to have what seems like an incredible number of questionable (at best) wagers.

And I thought that this FJ was easy to get from the reference to a medical experiment related to farming, i.e., cowpox ---> smallpox vaccination.

Regardless of whether or not that is the case, do we really need to rub a contestant's nose in it?

This seems a little meta for a game thread, but unless things have changed, comments on good and bad wagers seem completely appropriate. The same thing applies to really bad guesses, particularly on FJ. And I don't think it's anything that Manny (for example) isn't going to hear from friends, family, co-workers, etc.

Chelsea was in an interesting spot. With proper wagering from the leader, she had no chance. However, while Manny needs to wager $201 to cover Joanna, he cannot wager more than $599 to let her into the game. That's a very small window for a contestant who has not shown the ability to maximize winning chances. In many of these cases the leader would wager $1000 (typical round number) thereby letting Chelsea into the game.

But she obviously played for 2nd place, and given a different scenario such as an obvious lockout, there wouldn't be any problem with this. But this is a case where the optimal wagering window is just so small that you have to forgo the extra $1k for 2nd place to try a backdoor victory.

Joanna simply didn't try to win the game with her wager. Would be interesting to have a poll as to which wager was better between Manny and Joanna.

Agreed. We make comments on good play, we make comments on poor play. It's a two way street. For example, Joanna made a good sole solve in FJ while making a poor wager.

I got FJ before the music started but it would have been tough to puzzle out if you didn't know the story behind it. Even worse. "eradication of smallpox" is a lot to scribble down if you figure it out late in the allotted time.

Anybody else shout "HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!" for the Electric Company opening? Disappointed there was no clue about Morgan Freeman.

Joanna's not figuring out they want silent e cost Chelsea a chance to win.

I'm not sure what to think about the wagers. Manny's wagers have been all over the map in FJ. He failed to make the MSB in his first game and made a non-conventional (but still enough to lock out second) bet in his second. He did make a good wager yesterday. I wonder if Joanna made a math error and thought she was locked out. As Golf said, Chelsea was locked out if he makes the MSB. But it is a small window and if he goes for our old friend, the nice round number of $20,000 with just a few extra bucks in the pot, she is back in the game. At least she was rewarded with the extra $1,000 for making a proper bet.

On a side note, Chelsea won more today than Manny won from his final two games combined.

Joanna simply didn't try to win the game with her wager. Would be interesting to have a poll as to which wager was better between Manny and Joanna.
Manny's was probably marginally better if he expected both of his opponents to go all-in in the crush scenario, which was a rational expectation; if they had, he would have won on a TS.

And BTW, I think it's entirely appropriate to say that it's upsetting to see a contestant who has been given a very coveted opportunity to be on the show make an FJ wager that isn't even attempting to win the game. (And the fact that said contestant managed to win the game due to another player's improvident wager doesn't change that. Kudos to that contestant for her sole solve on a tricky FJ, though.)

Instaget FJ here. The year of 1796 led me immediately to Jenner's smallpox vaccine, and 1980 sounded about right for the WHO's announcement of the elimination of the disease.

I had never heard the London Eye called the Millennium Wheel before (and it probably hasn't been in a long time). I learned something new from this episode! (BTW, annoyingly, that wheel is now branded as the Coca-Cola London Eye.)
Bamaman wrote: Wed Oct 18, 2017 6:23 pm Anybody else shout "HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!" for the Electric Company opening?
I did! Oh, and I thought the "silent e" clue was mean, especially for a top-box clue. ETA: MarkBarrett, can you poll the "silent e" clue?

So is the consensus that Joanna was playing for second? If so, I wonder if she miscalculated and thought Manny had a runaway.

I didn't know what to make of this particular FJ. I came up with "stem cell research" with no confidence whatsoever.

FJ!: :(

London Eye for Millennium Wheel.

The Electric Company category was fun. Poll request: "I shouted 'HEY YOU GUYS!!!' as in the original show on the relevant clue."

FJ! was a WAD: Discovery of HIV/AIDS.
