2017 ToC Quarter-Final Matches Revealed - Discussion

Post by MarkBarrett »

The J! site has it, so I consider it fair game for discussion: https://www.jeopardy.com/tournaments/20 ... -champions

For those that like to wait for each night of the QF round to see who's playing then stay out.

Image

Monday: Buzzy Cohen vs. Hunter Appler vs. Pranjal Vachaspati

Tuesday: Tim Aten vs. Lilly Chin vs. Jason Sterlacci

Wednesday: Austin Rogers vs. Alan Lin vs. David Clemmons

Thursday: Seth Wilson vs. Lisa Schlitt vs. Sam Deutsch

Friday: Andrew Pau vs. Justin Vossler vs. Jon Eisenman

That makes it:
9-6-6
7-C-T
12-6-T
12-6-C
6-5-5

Andrew won the most $ of the 6-time champs, so that appears to have made him the 5th big dog separating him from the other ones.

Comments about the match-ups:

M: Pranjal has never trailed entering the FJ! round.
Tu: Jason (4 matches) has never trailed entering the FJ! round. I can't find another example like Tim of someone playing two tourney winners in the QF round.
W: Only something reckless by Austin can keep him from the semis.
Thu: Seth earned this draw that looks favorable for him on paper.
F: Justin has a 7th color shirt (orange) to go with red, pink, blue, green, yellow and purple worn previously.
I would call this the sleeper game as either Justin or Jon will step up and exceed expectations.

I watched the video on the J! site and detected no spoilers, thank goodness.

Anyone know what the blue ribbons represent?

Dark blue is the color of colon cancer awareness, in honor of the 16th player who didn't make it to Culver City for this event. They're Jason's idea.

Great idea by Jason for the group tribute. Thanks.

To echo the others, thank you for the information about the ribbons. I deducted that they were to honor Cindy, but had no idea they were Jason's idea. Very classy touch indeed. I, like everyone else I'm sure, would loved to have seen her play in this tourney, but she'll be there in spirit no doubt. :)

Monday's game should be a great barn-burner. I've pegged Pranjal and Hunter as my sleepers (if it's possible for 6x champs to be dark horses), so it will be tough to watch if one of them exits early. I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see all three in that game advance to the semis, however.

I agree that Seth and Austin have earned their more favorable matchups, and both *should* easily advance, but Alan and Lisa could easily slip away with wildcards. I think Andrew wins in a lock Friday.. maybe Justin can sneak a wildcard, but I just don't see it happening. Much like March Madness, I don't like going with the chalk, but it's hard to go against that in the early stages.

I'll take a swing with some predictions:

Monday = Pranjal
Tuesday = Jason
Wednesday = Austin
Thursday = Seth
Friday = Andrew

Wildcards: Buzzy, Hunter, Lisa, Lilly

If all that happens, I'd imagine the producers would want to split up Buzzy, Seth and Austin amongst the semi games, so a strong player like Andrew or Jason will really have their work cut out for them on the road to the championship. I still have a weird suspicion that Austin does not get to the finals.. especially if he's paired up with someone like Pranjal or Andrew. But that's a story for another day!

I feel like posting in this thread that there is an Austin impostor (imp-Aust-or?) on Twitter, @JeopardyRogers. The real Austin (who has a checkmark and everything) is @austintylerro.

Poll results for 2013, 2014, and 2015 TOCs

In predicting 2017 count on one FJ! clue easier than the other 5. Another trend in the previous three tourneys is a QF game producing three semifinalists.

My personal choice for the three line would be Tuesday while not particularly caring if the other games produce 1 or 2 of the final nine.

What I think the producers would have liked if they could have cherry-picked the results:

M: Buzzy
T: Lilly
W: Austin
Th: Lisa
F: Andrew

WCs: Hunter, Jason, David, Seth

Finals: Buzzy, Austin and non-threat

My prediction is this TOC going rogue and not Hoyle for a change of pace.

I'll go with something crazy like:
Ws: Hunter, Jason, Austin, Seth, Andrew
WCs: Pranjal, Lilly, Alan, Jon
Fs: Jason, Pranjal, & Jon

Disclaimer: I didn't go to this taping. The game descriptions below are entirely speculation. Any similarity to the actual outcome would be, frankly, shocking. But it's interesting to try to guess the player dynamics and how they'll set the progress of the games.
  • Monday: Buzzy and Pranjal duel into five digits. Pranjal aims for $20k but Buzzy goes all-in, taking the win but with Pranjal easily clinching a wildcard.
  • Tuesday: Jason and Lily stun Tim early, Jason bets big on a slim lead into FJ and wins with Lily missing FJ and Tim locked out.
  • Wednesday: David grits his teeth and suffers being on stage with Austin and Alan. Austin goes all-in and misses an early J! DD, but uses big bets on the other two to keep pace with Alan, and ends up adding enough money to the game that the two of them exceed $20k. Austin has a rare FJ! neg but stuns everyone with a zero wager, taking the second wildcard under Alan's win.
  • Thursday: Sam gets an early lead but Lisa and then Seth seize control of the game, with Seth eventually winning a lock.
  • Friday: This three-player slugfest is a dead heat into FJ. Everyone bets for $15k and they all get it, with Justin winning and the other two claiming the remaining wildcard spots.
Again none of this is an informed spoiler, but is instead simply an imagination run amok after midnight. If any of the above comes true I'll be laughing all the way back to this keyboard to babble about it some more. :lol:

My predictions are usually way off, but I'll do them anyway:
Winners: Pranjal, Jason, Austin, Sam, Andrew
Wildcards: Buzzy, Tim, Lisa, Seth
Andrew will have the only lock in the first week. IIRC, didn't both of his opponents basically admit that they don't care about strategy on Jeopardy! Live Panel?
Thursday's game should be an interesting game to watch. How will Sam's superior mastery of signaling device timing compare with Seth's and Lisa's superior knowledge? If all three don't make it, then I could see Alan snagging a wildcard on Wednesday.
I feel sorry for Hunter. If he was swapped with one of Andrew's opponents, he'd have a lot higher probability of getting a wildcard.

Monday: 40% Pranjal, 35% Buzzy, 25% Hunter. All three advance. That match-up is brutal.

Tuesday: 60% Jason, 25% Lilly, 15% Tim. Jason and Lilly advance.

Wednesday: 60% Austin, 20% Alan, 20% David. Only Austin advances.

Thursday: 55% Seth, 35% Lisa, 10% Sam. Seth and Lisa advance.

Friday: 65% Andrew, 25% Justin, 10% Jon. Only Andrew advances.

Andrew, Austin, and Pranjal make it to the finals. Buzzy and Seth could be interchangeable with Pranjal. Maybe even Jason. I'm gonna make a bold prediction that Andrew takes it with Austin in second.
