Because splitting one problem into ten smaller ones, and then adding all THEM up, is "simpler".
Peter the accountant wrote: Wed Nov 08, 2017 12:13 am Answer that question, please. What is the next multiple of 10 that is larger than 472.
Answer ME why we're going to multiples of 10.
Because I'm trying to teach and you're trying to be a student. Sometimes you have to trust the teacher and go along without understanding yet. It's OK. I'm not going to ask you to do anything dangerous. Except thinking. Thinking can be dangerous! ;)

Now. What is the next multiple of 10 that is larger than 472?

YOU can do anything you put your mind to. But getting out of very old ruts in thinking takes time. And it gets frustrating. Stick with it.

Next question: what do you add to 472 to get to 480? Wait. Don't answer that. Don't think about that. Let me ask a different question.

What do you add to 2 to get to 10?

I'm so dumb I almost put a 6, even though I know the answer is 8.

You've just flat out stated that 8+20+200+1000 is more complicated than 1700-472.

Explain to ME how that's possible.

Doesn’t matter. You’ll figure that out once it all clicks. Remember, just trust me for a bit.

So what do you add to 12 to get to 20?

We interrupt this pointless exercise in math that’ll inevitably end in frustration to wish TPH good luck as he travels to LA today to tape Wheel!

Good luck and hopefully no math comes up in your game!

You still haven't answered this one:

Which of these problems are easier?

14.00 - 6.00

15.23 - 6.49

15.00 - 7.00

1.00 - 0.80

1.21 - 0.83

Hey TPH, what's 500 - 399? Can you do that in your head?

That's right.

I'm going to annoy you some more. Please continue to bear with me.

How about adding from 102 to get to 110?
Or 122 to get to 130?
Or 142 to get to 150?

PS - My sincere best wishes for you today on Wheel! Go there safe in the knowledge that the only math on the show is adding up your winnings, and Pat will do that for you!

First things first. I hope you had an enjoyable day of taping!!
TenPoundHammer wrote: Wed Nov 08, 2017 8:20 pm Looks like 8. Where are you going with this?
Two places.

1. You CAN do math in your head. You just did. Several times. So remain confident that you can improve.

2. Can you see that each time you have done these, you've done the first step in breaking down the problem into smaller pieces? When we slipped into dealing with hundreds, you realized that the hundreds didn't change. They were irrelevant. Plus you almost instinctively realized that the 10s digit was going up by one, so you could do that in your head as well.

Here are the next exercises to stretch your thinking.
This time, tell me two things: What is the next multiple of 10 that's higher than the given number, and what do you have to add to the given number to get there. That second question is the one I've been asking recently. But the answer isn't going to be 8 every time. ;)

Here's a couple numbers to try:
7
31
59
265
Spoiler
7 next multiple: 10 add: 3
31 next multiple: 40 add: 9
59 next multiple: 60 add: 1
265 next multiple: 270 add: 5

Yeah, even though I keep jumping in, I just really have to stop. It's like trying to teach this to a 1st grader. You do have to understand how addition and subtraction (and counting to 10) work before these tricks will work. Peter is way more patient than I.

That's because you skipped a step.

Instead of 1700-480, the next step is to go to the next multiple of 100 larger than 480.

So, 500-480. Or the way I've been trying to phrase it, what you do add to 480 to get to 500?

Can you do that one?
