Jesse Tow, an after-school program coach from Austin, Texas
Joey Falco, a writer from Santa Monica, California (whose 1-day cash winnings total $3,999)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Not much money for joey, of course. He did not associate Ivory Coast, or Cote d'Ivoire, with elephants and ivory on yesterday's program. But he had the most money, so he'd like to earn more today against Jesse and Michael. Gentlemen, good luck. Here we go--Jeopardy! Round... And these categories for you...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
BOW TIES ARE COOL (4/4)
ALL "INN" (5/5)
HOUSTON, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM (4/5)
BEGGARS CAN'T BE BOOZERS (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
KISSING (3/5)
I GOT TO FIRST BASE (5/5) (Alex: How far did you get? Hey, ...)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Joey: 9 R (including 2 rebounds and 1 DD), 2 W
Jesse: 9 R (including 1 rebound), 2 W

Triple Stumpers: 3
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $2,000

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Joey found the Daily Double on the 10th clue. Joey had $1,600, Jesse had $400, and Michael was at $800. Joey made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,600.

BEGGARS CAN'T BE BOOZERS $600: This film director & winery owner is said to have kept the empty bottle of a $24,000 1941 Cabernet atop his refrigerator

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Joey: $4,800
Jesse: $1,400
Michael: $600

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Michael Tvaruzka is from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Sometimes in life, things don't go as well as we would like them to. They'll go well for a while. Tell me about the girl you met and asked out.

Michael: Well, I had seen this cute girl at the bar where I worked, and I asked her out on a date to go see a-a musician who was coming to town. Everybody liked him. So I had her come over to the house, uh, cooked dinner, prepared a dessert and everything, uh, but then had to go to the concert. And we had a good time and went to the bar afterwards, and she started talking to the singer and left with him.

[Laughter]

Alex: Jesse Tow is from Austin, Texas. Jesse blogs like most people nowadays, but about a specific subject, which is?

Jesse: Doritos.

Alex: Of course.

Jesse: Yes.

Alex: What's wrong with you, Jesse?

[Laughter]

Jesse: I like bold and tasty chips.

Alex: [Laughs] How'd you get started on this?

Jesse: I went to the convenience store near where I work, um, pretty often. And I noticed they had quite a bit of flavors that I hadn't tried, and it seemed like they were cycling them out here and there, so I thought, you know, what better way than to share my fine, discriminating taste of junk food with the world.

Alex: And the amazing thing is, there are thousands of people out there who are interested in that stuff, right?

Jesse: Well, they haven't found my blog yet, so...

[Laughter]

[Alex laughs]

Alex: Joey Falco is from Santa Monica, California. You're a big-time fainter, it says here. What--what are we talking about?

Joey: Occasionally. Um, the worse time was, uh, I was probably about 10 years old in the Statue of Liberty, climbing it up with--with my dad, uh, back when you could still do that, and, uh, maybe it was the heat or--or just the overwhelming experience, but I-I collapsed near the top, and my dad had to carry me down several hundred stairs. It was pretty horrible for him.

Alex: Does the elevator not mean anything to your dad?

[Laughter]

Joey: I mean, I don't want to say he's not the sharpest guy in the world, but--

Alex: You just did.

[Laughs]

Alex: You just did, and you're in deep, deep trouble.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
KISSING $400: In a novel he says, "None of the fools you've known have kissed you like this... your precious Charles... or your stupid Ashley"
(Alex: And that was [*] speaking to Scarlett O'Hara.)

KISSING $800: Marlene Dietrich called this love of hers "Papa" & wrote to him, "I want to kiss you forever and a day"

HOUSTON, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM $800: In 1937 Texas created this "control district" to combat a disaster that wreaked havoc in 1929 & 1935
(Michael: What is a hurricane control district?)
(Jesse: What is a tornado?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Joey: $5,200
Michael: $4,000
Jesse: $2,400

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
ROYAL WOMEN (1/4)
MOVIE PROLOGUES (3/5, including 1 correct Daily Double) (Alex: I'll give you all or part of the movie prologue, you identify the film for me if you will.)
INTERNATIONAL PLURAL-ISM (5/5)
"M"ISCELLANY (0/1)
MAPMAKING (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
SPACE: THE FINAL CATEGORY (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Jesse: 7 R (including 1 DD), 2 W
Michael: 6 R (including 2 rebounds), 2 W
Joey: 5 R (including 1 rebound and 1 DD), 2 W

Clues revealed: 25
Triple Stumpers: 7
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $10,400

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jesse snagged the next Daily Double on the 4th clue. Joey had $5,200, Jesse had $4,800, and Michael was at $4,000. Jesse made it a True Daily Double, wagering $4,800.

MAPMAKING $1600: (Jimmy of the Clue Crew presents the clue.) Greenland is much smaller than South America, but scale is distorted on this type of map named for a 16th century Fleming, so the farther away from the equator you get, the larger the distortion

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Joey who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 8th clue. Joey had $5,600, Jesse had $9,600, and Michael was at $4,400. Joey made it a True Daily Double, wagering $5,600.

MOVIE PROLOGUES $800: "The winter of 180 A.D., Emperor Marcus Aurelius' twelve-year campaign against the Barbarian tribes in Germania"

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MAPMAKING $2000: Isohyets are lines that join places that have equal this for a given period

MOVIE PROLOGUES $1200: "Early in the 21st century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced robot evolution into the Nexus phase"
(Jesse: What is I, Robot?)

MOVIE PROLOGUES $1600: "Robert Gould Shaw, the son of wealthy Boston abolitionists, was 23 years old when he enlisted to fight in the war"
(Alex: And that war was the Civil War, and the movie was called [*]--great film.)

ROYAL WOMEN $800: After dating an elephant trainer & traveling with his circus, this Monaco royal married an acrobat
(Alex: And that is [*], with a minute to go now Jesse.)

ROYAL WOMEN $1200: This queen of France was the great-granddaughter of Lorenzo the Magnificent

ROYAL WOMEN $1600: Starting a weird circle, this royal daughter's first boyfriend was Andrew Parker Bowles

"M"ISCELLANY $2000: As a student, this Asian leader was convicted of murdering his father's rival in an election
(Michael: Who is Mao?)
...
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Joey: $13,200
Jesse: $9,200
Michael: $7,600

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
CLASSIC CHILDREN'S BOOKS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Joey: Wager $5,201 to cover Jesse.
Jesse: You ought to wager to cover Michael, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $9,200. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $6,000 (to shut out Michael) or less than $1,200 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Michael). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Joey.
Michael: Considering that you're going to lose on a Triple Stumper by at least $400, you need to bet either $1,601, and play for a win if Jesse tries to two-thirds Joey, or bet at least $5,601 to cover Joey's $0 bet (though, from this position, a wager of all $7,600 is acceptable and perhaps preferred).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A. cavaticus, the scientific name of the barn spider, inspired the middle initial & last name of a character in this book

FINAL SCORES
Michael: $7,600 + $7,600 = $15,200 (What is Charlotte's Web?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Jesse: $9,200 + $6,001 = $15,201 (What is Charlotte's Web) (2nd place: $2,000)
Joey: $13,200 + $6,800 = $20,000 (What is Charlotte's Web?) (2-day champion: $23,999)
[Alex reads "A." as "Araneus".]
...
(Alex: Charlotte A. Cavatica is the cata--character name.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $12,400

GAME DYNAMICS
Image

CORYAT SCORES
Michael: $7,600, 14 R, 4 W
Joey: $7,400, 14 R (including 2 DDs), 4 W

Combined Coryat: $21,000

Michael: 15/58 = .259
Joey: 15/60 = .250
Team: 47/63 = .746

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
I GOT TO FIRST BASE $1000: As often happened with all-time leaders Craig Biggio & Ron Hunt, I crowded the plate & got on base this way
(Jesse: What is a bunt?)

BEGGARS CAN'T BE BOOZERS $1000: In 2005 a Korean businessman paid more than $70,000 for one of the last bottles of 1926 Macallan, a brand of this
(Michael: What is champagne?)

(Joey: What is 1918?)

ALL "INN" $200: Guiltlessness
(Joey: ...[*]--)
[Timer sounds.]
(Joey: [*]! What is [*]?)
...
(Alex: Joey was a fraction of a second late on that.)

ALL "INN" $600: A novelty, or something newly introduced
(Alex: Correct with a minute to go.)

BOW TIES ARE COOL $200: Shoo-be-doo-be-doo--it doesn't get much cooler than this guy, who founded Reprise Records in 1960

BOW TIES ARE COOL $400: This food magnate ran track at Purdue & in 1969, launched his first popcorn brand

BOW TIES ARE COOL $600: Seen here giving clues on "Jeopardy!", this guy graduated from Cornell with a mechanical engineering degree

BOW TIES ARE COOL $800: America's family doctor, this 1980s Surgeon General rocked a bow tie

And if so, were they all answered correctly? That was pretty cool, though the scores didn't wind up as high as you might have expected.

No lie. My only get in the whole game was años. I was tempted to give a deliberate wrong answer on a high valued clue just to give myself a negative Coryat.

The clues just weren't making sense to me. I kept misreading them or missing out on key words. Even if it was something I would normally have known outright, it wasn't getting to my mouth in time.

And how would I know that Carlsberg is a beer and not any other type of alcohol?

LTaM after clue 19. Were they REALLY playing that slow?

Missed chances at clever responses included "Bill Nye the Science Guy - Bill Bill Bill Bill!" and "Galveston, ohhhh Galveston."

Embarrassing for all three that "Star Wars" proved to be actually worth $2000 in effort. I mean, three guys, all sorta the right age? The secret base at Yavin? Death Star plans stolen?

The comet/asteroid question had all the charm of one those Oxford/Cambridge questions.

Very sloppy DJ round, not surprised to see five question go unanswered. I suspect the contestants knew all of the royal questions, if they could just take a second to step back and think about them. Okay, Princess Anne isn't the most well known, but it had to be an older royal to start the viscous cycle of Parker Bowling.

After the last couple of nights, I expect the complaints about FJ to run more toward how obvious it was. In fact it really could have been a Kid's Week Final Jeopardy.

A frustrating FJ for me. I knew the book referenced by the clue, remembered the author's name, but could not come up with the title in time. :(

Instaget (of course), but I spent a good 25 seconds staring at the screen, convinced that it couldn't be that easy. A get is a get, but that was a gimme.

The DJ round was painful to watch, but that Star Wars sequence was quite amusing (sorry guys).

Yes, it helped that no one was playing gangbusters and they were all hit relatively early. I think the first in DJ came about three questions in, and the next about two questions after that.

News to me. Certainly not as recognizable a name as say, Coors or Budweiser. Or even Killian's, my favorite.
ACW wrote:Think they would've taken infinite for innumerable?
Pretty sure the category had "Inn" in quotation marks, not "in". That threw me because I have never heard "innumerable" before.

Next time you're buying Killian's, ask the person selling it to you whether they've ever heard of Carlsberg, and whether it's a famous brand. Then take note of the expression on their face.

Hold on hold on. You didn't get compass rose? Considering your interest in Michigan roads, I tend to say that you might be ashamed. ;)

The question I was going to ask has already been done so, so I am content. :)

I have only heard "compass rose" a couple times ever. And I misread the clue, so I was confused as to why a flower would be on a map.
