Pat Kiernan and Ben Bailey were both mentioned earlier in this thread, but one possibility from a comment on the story piqued my interest.
Mike Rowe.
My thought is that whoever the host is has to sound authoritative, otherwise the show would be missing something. Any of these three would do very well.

Agreed. I think any of these three would be great.
Alex will be only be about three years behind Barker hosting the same game show at that point. Trebek will have 31 years and 10 months and change(9/17/84-presumably late July or early August 2016) and change to Barker's 34 years and nine months(9/4/1972-6/15/2007) from first to last first run show. Pat Sajak will break Barker's record from first first run show to last first run show if he's still hosting WHeel in early October 2016(his first first run Wheel was on 12/28/1981 on NBC Daytime). October 2016 is the month Pat turns 70.

He's bartending now and wouldn't his 15 minutes be up in 2016? How did he get hired for his TV job in the first place? The famous clip, his appearance with Kelly & Michael, his red carpet gig, and visit with Letterman all made it obvious the guy has future on TV in my opinion.
Or Harry Friedman could be shown a tape of QUizbusters and look into Matt Ottinger, whom Mark and I know from Invision Game SHow Forum/Usenet alt.tv.game-shows

No, there was no Matt Lauer clue on the 11/29 episode.
Wow, reading back over some of the entries in this thread sure elicited some cringes, given various events in the intervening years…
Especially seeing the one five posts before yours. I know weren’t here then, but look for a thread with his name in the title for a detailed explanation.
