CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Although Lisa Lyons is from van nuys here in Southern California, she competed in the Hawaii Marathon. How did you do?
Lisa: Well, Alex, I actually--it was my first time doing a marathon, and I trained religiously for six months, and I ended up walking the entire 26 miles. And I finished in 11 hours and 55 minutes. And I was happy. [Laughs]
Alex: Were you the last one to finish?
Lisa: No, I was like 19,877, and I think there were probably about 1,700 people that came in after me, but I probably could have gone another quarter-mile, which was really my goal. And if you're gonna walk 26 miles, it might as well be around Hawaii.
Alex: Absolutely right. Well, congratulations.
Lisa: Thank you.
Alex: Bing Huo from Sunnyvale, California. Your name means...
Bing: My name means "fire and ice"...
Alex: "Fire..."
Bing: So Bing means "ice".
Alex: "Ice". Okay.
Bing: So my parents were a little funny.
[Laughter]
Alex: Why?
[Bing laughs.]
Alex: Because of--
Bing: It's a very poetic name, I guess...
Alex: Did you--
Bing: --but not a very traditional name.
Alex: All right. Mechanical engineer. Doing what kind of work, exactly?
Bing: I can't tell you.
[Laughter]
Bing: I can--I work for the defense industry.
Alex: Rockets? Satellites?
Bing: Maybe.
[Laughter]
Alex: Drones?
[Bing shrugs]
Alex: Okay.
Alex: Joey Falco is our champion. I don't think he's a particularly good driver. I know nothing about this man, except for the fact that there wa--he was driving in Mexico, there was a cow sleeping on the road, and he hit it, right?
[Laughter]
Joey: There you go. Well, it was late at night.
Alex: Late at night. It had to be.
Joey: And apparently they like to lay there at night, and I was coming around a bend, and I hit it. I didn't know what I hit, but I wound up in a--in a ditch. And then when I got out, I saw that this cow was... no longer...
Alex: Right.
Joey: ...a cow.
Alex: So you did the right thing?
Joey: I did the right thing, 'cause there was a ranch right there. But it turns out that in Mexico--according to this man, at least--there's a "you break it, you bought it" kind of law, and, uh, he charged me $800 for the dead cow that had wandered into the street. And since it's Mexico, I wanted--I, you know, paid him and--and went home, but--
Alex: Well, there's a similar law in this country, and that is...
[Joey chuckles]
Alex: ...if you kill a cow on the road, that cow had no business being there.
[Laughter]
Joey: That's how I feel.
Alex: So you go to the rancher, and he has to pay you to repair your car.
Joey: That's how I feel.
Alex: I think that's the correct reading of the law. I hope so.

not even going to say anything about Joey's FJ wager.
Need two rulings from the judges......
Just "Harrison" for the Declaration signer DD?
And "Who are Merkel and the French dude?" on FJ.

Re: Friday, April 6, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Waiting for TPH to complain about how he had no chance in FJ given his prosopagnosia in 3, 2 ...
(Although, he would have a bit of a point, as I don't see any reasonable TOM in the text of the clue. (Recognized Merkel instantly, but couldn't recognize Sarkozy. Berlusconi would have been a bit more recognizable (and probably trying to grab her))

I predict he will also complain about how slow Lisa was to select, and how she read the whole category name. (Not that he'd be wrong this time!) I'm bitter because I was 3/3 in an unlikely category when they ran out of time.dhkendall wrote:Waiting for TPH to complain about how he had no chance in FJ given his prosopagnosia in 3, 2 ...

And this three time into Friday drought continues. Joey shot himself good with that ill-advised DD wager in the JRound then the neg right after. This Tournament field is getting into that drought, and Francis & Patrick should be watching since they are two great champs currently on the bubble.
Instaget final.

Surprisingly, I ran French Leave. $200 was probably the toughest, but I got it from knowing that Germany in Spanish is "Alemania". Also ran Word Up, and Jarlsberg kept me from running J Food.
How the heck was "this eagle-lion hybrid" a $1000 clue? I thought everyone knew that she made Fluttershy cry.
Hudson River and Witch were also grossly overvalued.
FJ? Doesn't matter since I've never heard of either person anyway.
Ironically, I was talking to a friend online about prosopagnosia and how it seems to hinder my ability to draw faces — which is a big handicap if you're trying to start a webcomic. (Still hasn't stopped Tim B^Uckley from being insanely popular...)

I am really tempted to say this is ignorant. How can you not know who runs Germany and France, they are two of our "allies".TenPoundHammer wrote: FJ? Doesn't matter since I've never heard of either person anyway.

Instaget...on Merkel. I should've recognized Sarkozy instantly as well, but didn't. Maybe, without realizing it and despite him being in the news, I haven't seen his face in in a while? Anyway, figured it out with time to spare.
When Bing hit that DD, I didn't even realize he was that close to the lead. I thought Lisa was going to run away with it, and was practically chanting "August! August!" on her DD.
If Joey makes the TOC as a 3-dayer directly because of that reckless wager yesterday, I'll laugh my ass off

FJ was an instaget for me. I guess it helps to pay some attention to world politics.
I laughed at how close I came on the August DD with my WAG of September.

I don't pay attention to world politics. And as I said, it wouldn't matter since I don't see how anyone could pick their faces out of a crowd.Roadgeek Adam wrote:I am really tempted to say this is ignorant. So its plain ignorance. That's exactly what I got out of your statement. This question has been asked several times, and I'm not going to ask it again. However, is it the inside sense that you just like the show in general or you just like being proven wrong every evening at 7?TenPoundHammer wrote:I don't pay attention to world politics. I liked this board a little bit better than the ones that we have seen lately. The guy who won benefited from that ridiculously easy "hydrogen and helium" DD. The female contestant should have known the "August" DD, but that one was a little harder.
I was lost on FJ. I definitely know Sarkozy's and Merkel's names but their faces just didn't look familiar to me.
Joey self-destructed a little bit in this game but it didn't matter too much, with the guy who won finding the last DD.

Re: Friday, April 6, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Kind of a loaded question: Can you name the president of South Africa? The Prime MInister of New Zealand? (Heck, many Americans can't even name the Prime Minister of their closest ally, but I think even TPH knows that one.) Heck, I would think most countries are either our "ally" or our "enemy" (and we know plenty of those leaders (Ahmadinejad, Kim, Chavez), but not all).Roadgeek Adam wrote:I am really tempted to say this is ignorant. It's more a case of knowing the leaders of "prominent" countries. Countries like the US, China, and Russia are more important nowadays than France and Germany (and much more so than NZ, S. Africa, and Canada). Just depends on who gets the most ink. (And I'll bet TPH that he probably can think of the names of 5 world leaders if he took the time to think about it (I'll even make it easy for him and include kings and queens, who are world leaders as well.)

I'm with David on this one. I'm fairly well-informed, but I couldn't name more than 10-20 world leaders. It just happens that Sarkozy and Merkel are among them.
