Alex: I hope there's some interesting background information about this regarding Meghan Whalen. You have traveled to France and Belgium to visit...
Meghan: To visit World War I sites.
Alex: Why World War I?
Meghan: Well, I was with a tour group that was visiting a lot of different historic sites. We had a--we worked with a professor who was a World War I scholar, so he took a bunch of people to see the World War I sites. And it was really fascinating and such an amazing part of history to see.
Alex: So he brought it all to life for you.
Meghan: Absolutely.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: Sean Sullivan, financial adviser from New Jersey. Did you ever practice law?
Sean: Yes, I did, Alex.
Alex: And you won a case without calling a witness, without asking one question?
Sean: Yes.
Alex: I'd like you to represent me. What--what were the circumstances?
Sean: It was a criminal case, and the prosecutor had one witness. He didn't prove his case, and I didn't want to help him out any. And I got to say in summation that I wasn't putting words in anybody's mouth, and we won the case.
Alex: Good for you. A man of few words.
Sean: But don't get arrested, okay?
Alex: Okay, I won't.
Alex: Steph Bundy is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. You work with alpacas, right?
Steph: I do. I work at a summer camp, and we have a number of animals, including an alpaca named Al.
Alex: Do alpacas spit? Because llamas do, don't they?
Steph: They do, especially if he's annoyed at something.
Alex: So he'll spit at you.
Steph: He will if he's very annoyed. Like, you have to give him a shot.
Alex: How do you stay on his good side?
Steph: You give him food.
Alex: Well, that works for me, too.
[Laughter]

Re: Thursday, January 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
CARS is not my kind of category unless it’s about a TV show vehicle or I’d even settle for the Ric Ocasek group. Automobile history? No thank you.
I ruled out Ford Mustang, Edsel, and Renault and did not know what to do with the two flags in the clue’s wording. I thought perhaps two guys and scribbled Aston Martin before time was up.
These previous clues matched the year and model though not enough for it to sink in for me yet like some works of literature with a year that J! uses over and over again.
#7062, aired 2015-05-05 1950s AMERICA $400: In 1953, the first of these Chevy sports cars rolled off the assembly line; all 300 made that year were white with red interior Corvette
#3347, aired 1999-03-09 WHICH CAME FIRST? $200: Toyota Corolla, Ford Mustang, Chevy Corvette, Porsche Boxster
#3146, aired 1998-04-13 IN ST. LOUIS $600: After 1953 & for the next 28 years, this car seen here was built only in St. Louis:
#3095, aired 1998-01-30 IN YOUR CHEVROLET $100: Introduced in 1953, it's considered America's first sports car
#3007, aired 1997-09-30 BUSINESS & INDUSTRY $200: The 1997 model of this Chevrolet sports car is only the 4th redesign since its 1953 introduction
#2884, aired 1997-02-27 AUTO FIRSTS $400: These seats were first offered in 1953 on Corvettes
This week we’re at 5, 5, 6, 6 for clues not played. The powers, writers, and host have to notice. If tomorrow is just as bad then I expect some kind of improvement on the Monday game. One way or another.
Another thing going on this week is a player in each game in single digits for clues correct.
Let’s see if Sean is lurking on this board. Sean, what was this about?

I, on the other hand, was quite happy with that category. Instaget.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2018 7:44 pm CARS is not my kind of category unless it’s about a TV show vehicle or I’d even settle for the Ric Ocasek group. Automobile history? No thank you.

Coryat: $25,600
37 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Marc Chagall (DD)
Very unfortunate for Steph that she couldn't get in on that last clue of DJ!, as that would have gotten her to exactly half of Sean's total. It wouldn't have mattered since they both missed what I thought was a pretty easy FJ! (Then again, I sold Chevys for a few months and then did customer service for GM for three years, so maybe it's just in my wheelhouse.)
Speaking of FJ!, it's interesting that the writers framed the clue as if the logo in question no longer contains a checkered flag and a fleur-de-lis. It does.

What is slowing down play so much? We're 0 for 8 on clearing boards this week. There wasn't even an LTAM in the DJ! round either...
Faux Pas for $400. I could've taken 400 guesses and not picked "age".
I saw no way to figure out Tutu for $200. There are lots of things that female dancers use, and "prototype" doesn't suggest clothing to me.
"Tower of Strength" Was my only NHOI/miss in Cliches.
Total brainfarts. I should've gotten the first three "B" movies, but I just couldn't pull them.
"Catherine" was very obscure for $400 IMO.
And I'm 0 for 4 on FJ! None of the clues added up to anything for me. What does a Corvette have to do with France?
Lach Trash: Bundestag. No idea how I knew that.

Steph Bundy: 7000-3000=4000
Sean Sullivan: 18800-3800=15000 (New Champ)
Meghan Whalen: 3000+3000=6000
I was hoping that Sean would think Steph would bet no more than 999 on FJ to ensure second, thus allowing him to bet 10800. Not quite an instaget, but definitely able to suss it out.

R: 17, W: 2, costing 1600
Coryat: 9600
FJ:
LT: used up all my LT karma yesterday. None today.
My worst game this week by far. At least I'm enough of a car guy to know the Corvette logo. Crossed flags, one checkered, done. I've never noticed the fleur-de-lis on the other flag, but that didn't matter to me.
I liked Steph's FJ answer, if not her clavinesque wager.
The string of single day winners continues, as does the string of unrevealed clues.

More to the point, corvette is a French word. The diminutive -ette is a dead giveaway.econgator wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2018 8:24 pmLouis Chevrolet was French.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2018 8:20 pm And I'm 0 for 4 on FJ! Nearly pure WAG on the FJ answer, which I got only because Corvette sounded more French than Mustang. I was thinking of "Chevy" Corvette, so Chevrolet being French too didn't even occur to me. But a get is a get, so I am happy.
Also happy because the electricity came back on well before J! time, AND the local news chose NOT to interrupt or preempt the show for storm coverage. They did do a short update during what would have been the opening music, player intros, and AT's opening remarks. But apparently they have been trained well enough to get back to the show before the categories are revealed, which aids my personal score-keeping immensely. Since Comcast decided to drop the Providence station from the Cape Cod market, I am dependent on the Boston station, which can be problematic.

Re: Thursday, January 4, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Why weren't they prepared for "massage" as a synonym for backrub? Sean ended up spinning his wheels giving extra info when he didn't really need to. That may have been what haunted him into specifying "dead" when Alex didn't say yes quickly enough to "not enough room to swing a cat." I worried that would cost Sean, but apparently some people do say it with the "dead" modifier. News to me.
Bummer for Steph on the Gracie Mansion neg. I think she knew the right response but the lights made her access the wrong brain space. Any other day, any other place, and she gets that one with no problem.
If I were the host I would've BMS'ed "What is Birdman?" just to mess with the contestant. Wait a couple of beats and then say, "Nah, just kidding!"
The Great Santini clue reminded me of our discussion from yesterday. If the clue had been asking for the main character in Pat Conroy's novel about a fighter pilot, would "Who is The Great Santini?" be acceptable? Or would the judges require the name Meecham?
I wouldn't have rung in on the Amanda Donoghue novel clue. But from the couch, I guessed "What is The Room?" I don't know why I added the definite article. I wonder if my response would have been accepted. Amazon does offer a novel called "The Room" by Jonas Karlsson. So maybe I'd have been hoist by the Invisible Man petard.
On the lower house complement to the Bundesrat, I yelled out "What is Bundesmaus?" just for yux. Mrs Penguin thought it was funny anyway.
Guessed Peugeot on FJ. Renault was my second choice. Wasn't going to get to Corvette.

This is the third straight game that has involved the mention of Virginia Woolf at some point.

Wagering 10800 would be incredibly foolish. Significantly worse than Steph wagering more than 1000.
