Truman, Augustus Caesar (desperation guess), no guess.

The only other one I considered Monday was Nixon, but I dismissed him because he would have resigned in Washington and that's when I would have thought he became an ex-President.
Warren first; Warner was a guess.
Have not seen Manchester by the Sea.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

As the first one posting to have seen it : Manchester by the sea is an excellent movie - a great study of grief. It is sad, but not depressing.

I said Truman on Monday and had the presence of mind Thursday to name a Best Picture nominee from last year's awards—unfortunately I could only think of the infamous two, and I knew the winner wouldn't be the correct one, so I said La La Land.

edit: I came up with Warren as the only one of the four implied senators I could name (I'm glad Tim Kaine didn't pop into my mind), and just anagrammed her last name to another plausible last name. It was similar to how I would have solved this FJ

M - instaget on Nixon - familiar with the call sign story
Tu - I knew it was about Pompeii and named the only Roman scholar type name I know, but said Pliny the Elder; NHO the younger.
W - epic fail on pulling the Warren name in spite of knowing exactly who it was. Even after pausing to get it, couldn't solve the anagram b/c it was too easy.
Th - ha ha. Actually did guess "An Inconvenient Truth" just for an answer.
F - Only was worried it might be Iran

Clammed on Trivia pursuit but knew the answer. After realizing the mother didn't murder seals (or walruses), easily went to Pelican. RTFC, tfb...

Nixon was an instaget. Egypt was a good/lucky guess.

A pelican made sense after the fact, and I've probably seen it. Heard of both Pliny's, but had no idea who they were. Guessed Cicero.

Another "Warner is a name that exists, so I'll guess that" here.

I knew the author was a Nicholas, but I could only think of Hoult, and I knew that was wrong. I've even read one of his novels.

i "blame" the Russia investigation and his frequent CNN/MSNBC appearances for my thinking of Warner first.
Crossed off Egypt and wrote Algeria on Friday.

Put Warren first. There's a reason (which I can't disclose under penalty of death) that I will now always associate Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Massachusetts. Sen. Mark Warner is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and makes frequent appearances on MSNBC as a result of the Russia investigation.

Bad week all around.

Recently learned about the plane call sign change (could have sworn it was here on JBoard) so that was fresh in my mind.

Wasted precious time going from Socrates to Plato before remembering that - duh - they were greek, not roman. Settled on Cicero. I've heard of the Pliny's but it is unlikely that I would have pulled them out. Had I, I would have wrote the full "the Younger".

Then why bother specifying the Elder?

The movie clue was difficult; even friends of mine "in the business" didn't know that Manchester had been distributed by Amazon. It probably should have been bigger news along those lines but combined with the fact that it made less than $50 million - that was a rough FJ.
