CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Maria Pecoraro is from New Haven, Connecticut. How did I get to be "Uncle Alex" in your house?
Maria: Oh, well. I have a niece, Marisa. And when she was two, she was a little whirlwind, would never sit down until she heard the Jeopardy! theme. So we used to say to her, "Sit down, let's watch Uncle Alex," and we could get some food into her every now and then. So you are Uncle Alex to us, I'm afraid.
[Laughter]
Alex: I don't mind at all.
Maria: Thank you.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: Ryan Fenster, a banker from SeaTac, Washington. What's this? You're gonna be attending the University of Iceland starting this summer?
Ryan: That is correct. I'm doing a master's program in Viking and medieval Norse studies.
Alex: How 'bout that?
Ryan: Yeah.
Alex: How did you get interested in that?
Ryan: My family is mostly Norwegian. And I've just always loved history, and especially, just kind of getting into the history of my own people.
Alex: Iceland's a lovely place.
Ryan: Yeah.
Alex: You'll have a good time.
Alex: Jennifer Tomassi, freelance writer from Los Angeles. And you attended a Comic-Con and went in costume as...
Jennifer: Yes. My niece, Morgan, decided that we should go as characters from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. So she of course wanted to be King Arthur, and her brother was his servant, Patsy. My husband, Matt, went as Tim the Enchanter, and I was the killer rabbit.
[Laughter]
Jennifer: There were more of us and we made quite a splash.
Alex: I'm sure you did.

DOG BREEDS $800: This breed is an English greyhound in miniature
THE WORDS OF H.G. WELLS $600: Wells preached & definitely practiced this 2-word phrase for ignoring the conventional constraints of marriage
Both clues had Ryan negged (Italian greyhound & open marriage) and Maria (whippet & free love) rebounding, turning them into double correct as Alex announced two reversals to open the DJ! Round.
On the triple miss in DOG BREEDS for the Japanese dog I could make out Lhasa Apso & Sharpei, but what was Ryan’s miss? Sounded like Shubean?
The game got better as after clue 10 the players were still all in the red.
After think time Alex said, “Basically there were two choices for you for this clue.” Yes, I had two although both were wrong as I crossed out dollar bill and wrote U.S. Flag.
THE 1960s to Vietnam War to draft card seemed so obvious as the responses went along yet I failed to get there.
Ryan had a lock. He could have bet zero and gone for the laugh with “bra.”
For Fleeboy, Myron and others who like old TV even if before their time: Too bad this game with Ryan Fenster did not have a clue or response with Dickens. Say what? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_Dic ... 7s_Fenster

The sheer wackiness of this game made me giddy. Too bad I didn't have any bingo cards ready. (See the "On Potent Potables" thread.) This was a particularly good game for my kids, so I'm jazzed about that. And, wow, the J! round gameplay really forced me to appreciate The Power of the Clam.

Johnny's closing tag changed to "Jeopardy! is also brought to you by..."
Ugh, so many negs. I don't blame them; this was a lousy set of boards. At least they managed to recover.
It seems the judges were off their game too, given the two reversals at the start of DJ!
Odysseus = Ulysses rings no bells to me. Usually I can hold my own in mythology categories, but I bombed that one.
Saw no way to figure out any of those French fruits and vegetables. That word at $200 didn't sound remotely like "peas" to me, and the word before it threw me further away.
Also saw no way to figure out Montreal or Haiku in the top box.
Ran 2 Letters.
Mom took the "flag" negbait. I had neither that nor the correct response.

Oh the 1960s? Vietnam era? Burning? Oh well then it's surely that old standby of protesting the government, burning the American flag.

...oh. And as extra salt in the wound, after 2 rounds full of negs and TSes, it's a triple get. Well !@#$

Was it my DVR or did WLS Chicago have a glitch just as the "Orestes" response was being given?

Re: Monday, January 29, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Learned a couple of things today that I didn't know that I didn't know. First, that the Texas school book depository's name actually was Texas School Book Depository. I always just thought it was a description of the building, not the actual name of the place. Or used to be the name, anyway. It just doesn't sound like an actual building name. I was surprised by the lack of reversal before finding out that it was the actual name of the place, and not just a generic descriptor.
Second, that the moon is named Io, and not Lo. I never realized before today that the first letter was an i. I'm not sure I've heard the name spoken aloud before, and I just always thought it was Lo.

I was expecting Alex to say the law was overturned by a Supreme Court decision in the 1990s. Oh well, I get to check the box for flag on Saturday.
Nice recovery by Ryan to get a lock and over $20,000.

I thought it would be cross burning, given the era. Draft cards didn't even occur to me...

Did any other fellow Canadians totally eat it on this FJ? Had forgotten that burning the draft card was a thing, knew flag was too obvious (and the "altering" didn't make sense in that context) and left grasping for options.
Wish that if I were at a podium I could have had the guts to say "grilled cheese sandwich" if "flag" wasn't also a good enough guess.

Impressed that Ryan ended up over $20k, despite that train wreck of a start and his lack of DDs.
Went with the US Flag for FJ. Briefly considered the dollar bill or currency but that didn't seem to make much sense. Never considered a draft card although in retrospect it is quite obvious.

Same thoughts and reaction here. I remembered after the fact that one of the proper methods of disposal for the flag is to burn it.. whoops. Not a big fan of this game but Ryan played well in the latter stages to redeem some of it. Looking forward to seeing what he can do tomorrow.
I got the Mount Airy, NC clue only from remembering Hunter Appler's announced hometown during his initial run. I'll be curious to see if anyone else got it the same way.
