Game Recap for Show #7714, 2018-03-08

CONTESTANTS
Liz McCarthy, a communications executive from South Orange, New Jersey
Hannah Ewing, a teacher from Stamford, Connecticut
Lane Flynn, a business owner from Atlanta, Georgia (whose 1-day cash winnings total $19,198)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. We are on such a good roll this week with all of our champions winning big. So I don't wanna say anything that might change that. So Liz, Hannah, and Lane, I'll just wish you good luck and put you to work in the Jeopardy! Round. Let's see how well you deal with these categories today...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
1918 (4/5)
STATE GOVERNMENT (4/5)
STUPID ANSWERS (5/5)
NOTEWORTHY NONFICTION (5/5)
WHERE YA FROM, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST? (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Lane: 15 R, 1 W
Hannah: 7 R (including 1 DD), 0 W
Liz: 6 R, 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 2
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $1,200

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Lane: $2,600
Liz: $2,000
Hannah: $1,400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Liz McCarthy is from New Jersey, and she tells us that her mom was a game show maven, which means what?

Liz: My mother knew everything. And in 1959 she was on Tic-Tac-Dough and won $50,000 and bought our first house.

Alex: My gosh. That would be like a million, five hundred thousand...

Liz: She'd be Ken Jennings today.

Alex: Yeah, all right.

Alex: Hannah Ewing, I've got good news for you. Your response of "comptroller" a little while ago was deemed acceptable after the fact.

Hannah: Thank you.

Alex: And so you're picking up $1,600.

Hannah: Wonderful.

Alex: So you're at plus-$1,400. That make you feel good?

Hannah: It does.

Alex: Something else that should make you feel good has to do with sea turtles

Hannah: Yes.

Alex: And the work you did saving some of them.

Hannah: Yep, I was on the balcony of the house I was living in and saw some men pulling a sea turtle out of the Atlantic Ocean. Decided the smartest thing to do was to chase people through the jungle, take pictures, handed the pictures over to the United Nations officials. And they were apprehended and the sea turtles survived.

Alex: Good for you.

Hannah: Thank you.

Alex: Way to go.

Alex: Lane Flynn is our champion, folks. He is from Atlanta, Georgia. You bought your high school dream car. I wanna hear about that, 'cause I have my high school dream car also.

Lane: I did. So when I was in high school, I wanted a blue BMW M3 convertible. And these were very expensive. I couldn't afford one, didn't have one, but almost 20 years later, you can get ones that are not in great shape, but pretty cheap. So I bought one and for the past two years I've been fixing it up, and it runs. I've been having a great time, and that's what I've done.

Alex: My high school dream car was a Chevy.

[Laughter]

Lane: Gotta dream big.

Alex: Yeah, all right.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Hannah found the Daily Double on the 25th clue. Lane had $5,200, Hannah had $3,600, and Liz was at $2,400. Hannah wagered $1,400.

WHERE YA FROM, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST? $800: Gymnast Nadia Comaneci, always a 10 in our book, hailed from here

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
STATE GOVERNMENT $1000: Per the language of the 10th amendment, delegated powers go to the feds & these powers are kept by the states
(Lane: What are all other powers?)

1918 $200: The 12th of this group of proposals from Pres. Wilson called for free passage for ships through the Dardanelles

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Lane: $7,400
Hannah: $5,000
Liz: $4,000

Clues revealed: 29
Triple Stumpers: 6
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $9,600

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Lane snagged the next Daily Double on the 11th clue. Lane had $8,600, Hannah had $3,800, and Liz was at $4,000. Lane wagered $3,000.

WEIRD WORDS $2000: Bedlam was an asylum; Bridewell gave us a generic word for one of these
(Lane: What is a hospital?)

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Liz who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 24th clue. Lane had $8,000, Hannah had $4,600, and Liz was at $10,400. Liz wagered $2,000.

MUSIC TERMS $1200: This word for disturbance of regular flow or rhythm as in jazz is from the Greek for "cutting short"
(Liz: I don't know. What is staccato?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
A QUICK RIDE $1600: In South Korea the Incheon Airport Maglev is one of these
(Lane: What is a monorail?)

A QUICK RIDE $2000: "P" is for pursuit in this alphanumeric plane used by World War II's Flying Tigers
(Hannah: What is P-42?)

WEIRD WORDS $1600: The adjective pyroclastic refers to fragments that can dangerously blast away from one of these

(Liz: What is potassium?)
(Hannah: What is iron?)

MUSIC TERMS $2000: The opposite of an augmented chord is this type of chord

CHINESE EMPERORS $1600: Emperor Yangdi undertook great public works projects in the 600s, like this once-1,100-mile waterway
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Lane: $10,000
Liz: $9,600
Hannah: $6,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
BESTSELLING NOVELS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Lane: Wager $9,201 to cover Liz.
Liz: You have to wager $2,801 to cover Hannah's doubled score, but certainly no more than $3,399, so as to force Hannah to be right to have a chance at winning.
Hannah: Consider risking between $3,401 and $5,399. This will top a $0 wager by Liz while still beating Lane on the Triple Stumper (should Lane wager to cover Liz's doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
This 1990 novel made into a blockbuster film says the Hammond Foundation "has spent $17 million on amber"

FINAL SCORES
Hannah: $6,200 + $3,401 = $9,601 (What is Jurrassic Park?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Liz: $9,600 + $5,000 = $14,600 (What is Jurassic Park?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Lane: $10,000 + $9,201 = $19,201 (What is Jurassic Park?) (2-day champion: $38,399)
(Alex: [To Hannah] Contained within the amber, those little insects with the DNA of those dinosaurs.)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $10,800

GAME DYNAMICS

Hannah: 11/59 = .186
Team: 52/63 = .825

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES

(Hannah: What is the comptroller?)
[Originally ruled incorrect; ruled correct during contestant interviews]

1918 $400: On the eve of the armistice ending World War I, this leader abdicated & fled to the Netherlands

WHERE YA FROM, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST? $1000: 9-time champ Paavo Nurmi from this country also held the world record for the mile for 8 years
(Alex: With less than a minute now.)

NOTEWORTHY NONFICTION $600: One medium for the message of this Canadian scholar was his 1964 work "Understanding Media"

NOTEWORTHY NONFICTION $1000: Barry Goldwater wrote "The Conscience of a Conservative"; in 2017, this Arizona senator used the title for his book

A QUICK RIDE $400: Perfect ride for Phil Rizzuto, who shared his nickname with one

A QUICK RIDE $1200: A police squad car like the one here, or a fast warship

Cool story that Liz's mom won big on Tic Tac Dough in 1959.

The reversal clue was STATE GOVERNMENT $800: A state treasurer manages revenue & this official reviews how state money has been spent

Hannah was negged for the comptroller when Alex wanted auditor and he gave her the money back at story time.

Liz missed DD3 and it's a haunter since it cost her the match while Lane survived losing 3K on his miss on DD2.

The FJ! clue had 3/3 written all over it and the players came through. Being able to turn BESTSELLING NOVELS into a movie clue worked fine for me to be done before the music began.

So close to a 61-clue game.

I was half expecting "all other powers" to be reversed in Lane's favor.

The P-40? Really? I'd bet that gets missed 99 times out of 100.

I have no idea why they negged comptroller in the first place. Also thought that 10th amendment clue might have warranted a BMS, but I'm not a constitutional expert.

I can NEVER keep those P-model WW2 planes straight in my head. Tonight was no exception. Poll request? I'm curious if it's just me.

Super-instaget FJ.

How was 14 Points a stand and stare? I'm exhausted from work and suck at history, and I still got that one.

Can't say I've heard of a "pullover" or "La Boheme", thus ensuring my streak of being completely unable to run a Stupid Answers.

Saw no way to figure out any of those Olympics clues. I didn't see a single TOM for China in the top box. That entire category seemed YEKIOYD.

Also couldn't think of anything to put together to form a bowl. That whole category was miles over my head.

Ran the Music category.

Lach Trash: 14 points, train, diminished

I had no idea what to even guess on FJ! I couldn't manage to process "Amber" as anything other than a name. Alex's tipoff after the music ended finally put the pieces together.

30 right.

1918 (5), State Government (3), Stupid Answers (4), Nonfiction (3), Olympic (5), In "Business" (0)
Auntie (0), Music (1), Quick (3), Weird Words (1), Chinese Emperors (2), Lawyer (3)

Lach Trash: auditor, Fourteen Points

I settled on Jurassic Park near the end of the music, even though I didn't feel totally confident about it.

Not a problem for an old warbird buff like me, but I still think it's too obscure for Jeopardy, even in the $2000 row. Especially with the age generation of most J! players. P-51 is the only WWII fighter (alpha-neumeric) that is 'universally' known by appearance anymore.

Poll request; I don't think it would go over 20%.

Never read the book or saw the movie, but got FJ on a complete guess.

Didn’t know the plane. I thought of “all other powers”, but clammed because I couldn’t think of a more eloquent way to put it.

Bestselling Novels is a category that would’ve had me nervous, but this one was an instaget for me. I’ve read the book and watched the movie a few times.

I don't think it'll break 10%...but will be more than 1%. P-51's the only one I could name, too.
