I have a Cheech and Chong cassette tape with SME and Basketball Jones on it.

That I got signed by Tommy Chong. (He wrote, of course, "Dave's not here!" on it.)

If you leave the cake out in the rain, does it end up by the ocean? ;)

I only got the Carpenters, but should have come up with Bone Thugs & Harmony - Kyle Schwarber of Chicago Cubs fame used that as his walkup song at some point (and maybe still does...not sure).

None of those are in my usual rotation, but I used to be a comedy/novelty radio DJ a la Dr. Demento, so I've had a lot of weirdness on my radar.

The latest episode of "This American Life" (which became available for download yesterday but is dated 3/30) is a repeat of a 2005 episode that used "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" after its final act. I've heard the episode before (I guess it last reran in 2012, because I remember it being one of the ones I loaded on my phone in advance of my choir's trip to Germany and Austria), but I didn't recall the song. So I've heard clips of two songs from the category, but I don't know that having heard clips of songs constitutes having heard those songs.

I didn't believe the answer when first revealed. I thought the cake was a lie.
I have heard this song WAY too many times - and even saw them perform it in person (they opened for Selena Gomez, my granddaughter's favorite). Last time I went home to visit (Florida), my daughter and I even took a picture with a cake by the ocean to send to my son - he calls that song "his jam."

Same here, in addition to "on top of the world" being another TOM. Their song Top of the World was in the Top 40 at the same time Basketball Jones was. I remember my HS cross country coach explaining what 'jones' meant in that context, when the song came on the radio on the way to a meet.

I NHO the Jim Stafford song either.

Got the first one on a guess and knew the Carpenters. Had a vague idea the $2000 clue might be Cheech and Chong, but clammed. Can’t remember ever hearing any of the songs.

Haven't heard of any

I was -thinking- Champagne very hard but simply calling it 'wine' caused me to clam. I was expecting a brand name.

Having the Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, the Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits (for learning about Bone Thugs n' Harmony with "Tha Crossroads"), and listening to old AT40 shows helped me know those. I might have known the Carpenters just based on Richard and Karen, regardless of any song title. I'm usually better with older tunes, but I started paying attention to newer Billboard charts to try and get the new artists/songs that come up in clues (still didn't know DNCE or "Cake by the Ocean").

I own the 90s Carpenters tribute album that includes Babes in Toyland's cover of "Calling Occupants" as well as (more famously) Sonic Youth's rendition of "Superstar."

I only missed the $1200 clue. Anything before 1990 though is my wheelhouse.
