In previous TDs, I rarely take a chance on submitting an answer that I'm not sure of. This time I decided to take a couple of chances and I think it turned out. Knowing my luck they will be sheep anyway.

There is also a Michigan area code with a Michigan-specific question, so I hope that pays off, too.

Thanks FG. I have dutifully submitted my accidental double entry. At least the auto-complete helps me repeat the first answers.

For some reason I can't hear the audio clues this time around. Yes, my speakers are on, no, I haven't muted the clyp file. I have tried both at home and at work. Any suggestions other than to use my drop and sheep options for these 2 questions?

Thanks! got it solved, although "older" music ain't my strong suit. May end up using drop and sheep anyway. :|

Time to get on the stick. Only 38 participants right now. Previous TDs in the ring have had at least 50 entrants.

I accidentally hit submit on my submission because I was stupidly doing it on a phone and the screen skipped while scrolling. Can you please use my second submission? The first one has a half answer I was typing and is missing the last few questions and my drop and sheep. I submitted the full one about 2 minutes after :( I tried to PM you but it doesn't seem to be going through?

My goal was simply "Not Secretariat, not Affirmed, not Man o' War (hah!), and not American Pharoah", and I picked the first horse that came to mind. If I had thought of Smarty Jones, I would've picked him for sure...

This is a good place to recommend Replay by Ken Grimwood: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_(Grimwood_novel)

The horse winning in my birth year is the kind of thing that comes in handy to recall every so often.

ETA: Reading the Wikipedia article I linked shows too bad I did not recall the Emory = Atlanta portion as that would have helped with the FJ! clue I missed in February.

Can't believe that I have a score of 2 after the first two questions (and that Al Gore was a singleton!). Equally surprised that somehow I'm in 25th with such a score

xxaaaxx, I picked Man 'O War, because I figured a lot of the players would find him ultra-obvious, and so avoid him. This worked even better than I expected!

503 - OREGON
Astoria, Oregon was established as a utopia by John Jacob Astor. Like most utopias, it failed to live up to its promise, but it remains a thriving place on the Columbia River (which most know flows directly to the ocean). Answer one of these questions about utopias.
  • What religious sect based in Maine is down to its last two members, because the sect believes sex is not one of the "simple gifts" and forbids it even in marriage?
  • William Penn planned his colony as a utopia based on orderliness. What major city of the United States was the first laid out on a grid?
  • What is the one word name of the planned, largely agrarian, communes of Israel?
  • Who coined the term utopia in the book of the same name?
  • What ancient scholar proposed a utopia in his Republic?
  • What colony founded by Germans in Iowa invented the side-by-side refrigerator/freezer?
  • Name either the Greek province or the mythical region claimed in English literature to be pure and unspoiled by civilization (will be scored together)
  • Where in Minnesota are the women strong, the men good looking, and all the children above average?
  • What utopian colony established in New York in 1848 is still a well-known name in silverware?
  • What garden did the Lord establish in Genesis chapter 2?

Memo to self, re Oneida: The other competitors really know a lot. I am unlikely to get very far by attempting to pick something relatively obscure. In the future, I will keep looking for the Man O' War type options!
