Did not get the lean/clean clue and it is not part of my personal experience other than thinking I may have heard it on Undercover Boss, though not certain.

I've heard the lean/clean expression a lot at work.

It's like I'm cursed. 0/10 on College Week?!

Went with Gettysburg...maybe another 30 seconds would have turned me around on that one...
Never heard lean/clean...I've heard of the book - or rather the movie - and I figured the clue was referring to it, but couldn't get to the title in time...

Wed - truth, life. Probably needed another 3-4 minutes for way, even if the clue was correctly rephrased.

I'm Watson-level confident I've heard the 'If you have time to lean...' line in real life, but much too long ago to make a difference when it ran.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Ajax on Monday
Had “truth” and “life” on Wednesday
Sir Gawain on Friday

My first job was at a pizza place, and the assistant manager was very fond of the “time to lean, time to clean” line. He was also a massive coke fiend who murdered a bunch of people. I will never use that phrase.

I've definitely heard of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (and wish you'd have asked that rather than whether we got it; I frequently wish that when you take poll requests from TPH). I'm not positive that I've heard of "If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean."

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Thursday, but the moment Arlington was said I thought that was better (albeit too big for a "shrine" in my mind).

6% get on a top box? That has to be a record low.

Have heard of “Me and Earl...” but know nothing about it and was not getting it from this clue.

Went overly specific with Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Tried to make a three word phrase out of "truth" and "life" until via > way > "the way, the truth, and the life" clicked.
I remember "if you have time to lean, you have time to clean" from working at McDonald's.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Also, WOW, a jaw-dropping 6% for a top-row clue on College Jeopardy. As clear a sign as any that the writers erred very, very badly on that one. I recall that when I asked for a poll on a bottom row TS clue on regular Jeopardy about Riverworld even THAT polled at 14% or so.

 :?:

Lean/clean is another in a long line of "common" phrases that pop up on J! that I've never heard before in my life, and make me wonder if I grew up in the same country as these writers. We clearly don't read the same books

15 in a row; 10/10 college plus those pitiful FJs during the last regular week. It would be 23 if I could've removed my head from my ass and gotten Colorado in time.

I wonder what the all-time low is for one of Mark's bonus clues.

So who did get Me And Earl and the Dying Girl?

I heard about it when the movie was out but never read nor watched it.

It's been mentioned in this thread and the daily thread that "lean/clean" is associated with McDonald's. Eric Schlosser
in Fast Food Nation says that 1 in 8 American workers has worked for McDonald's. Maybe including a Jeopardy! writer or two?

My guess before reveal is 5-1-3-4-2 for the M-F pentfecta (1 is easiest).
Currently: 2tie - 1 - 4 - 5 - 2T. Damn, boardies are good at mythology!

Mon -I went with Hercules because I just learned the night before that he is a Greek figure, always thought he was Roman (turns out to be complicated)
Tues - Almost went Nutcracker Suite, but lucked out
Wed - Easy get from childhood memory. Turned out to be a game of telephone - It's always been "the way, the truth, and the LIGHT". Oops. (actually Light is much more poetic imho).
Th- Gettysburg only. Knew the battle year at 1863, but not the year of the speech.
Fr- WECIB?

Thanks, MB for the "lean/clean" query. It makes more sense for the writers to use it now that boardies have explained it's provenance. I guess I won't pass it on at work 'ere I become a crackhead and murderer. As I posted, I am an aficionado of workplace jargon. For the curious, here's the three rules of sewerline plumbing:
Spoiler
1. The boss is a (expletive deleted)
2. Shit runs downhill
3. Don't chew your nails
But wow, the "Me and Earl" is a real gobstopper. Tough job, that being a clue writer.
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

Almost went with Gettysburg but the date being a year off pointed to the other site.

Heard of "Me and Earl" but didn't know anything about it. I don't know if we're really the target audience so I don't know if the low recognition rate here says much. I suspect the writers go out of their way to come up with pop culture clues that will likely go over the heads of anyone born after 1990. That said, maybe it was just a tad undervalued. ;)
