CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Krishna Veeraraghavan is from Seattle, Washington, and he's one of the founders of the Pizza Society. Which means what?

Krishna: It's just a group of friends who like to eat pizza. It probably exists everywhere, but some of us get tattoos, some of us don't.

Alex: Ah. Okay.

Alex: All right, Jen Regan, you're from North Bergen, New Jersey, and you were considered to be too wild for a rock band. What does that mean?

Jen: Well, when I was a year and a half old, my parents took me to Europe. And we were staying at the same hotel as the Rolling Stones, who were on tour. And one day in the restaurant, we were there, and the Rolling Stones were over in another section, and I started crying because I was cranky. It was the end of a long day, and I made so much noise that they all got up and stormed out and made rude comments to my parents about me on the way by.

Alex: You cleared the room of the Rolling Stones.

Jen: I did.

Alex: All right, good for you.

Alex: Randy Mathews.

Randy: Yes, sir.

Alex: Fragrance specialist.

Randy: Yes, sir.

Alex: Which means you deal in exotic oils and fragrances, what, what exactly?

Randy: Nothing that fancy.

Alex: You sell perfume.

Randy: I do. Exactly.

Alex: What is the biggest seller that you have going?

Randy: My biggest seller is--can I say the name? Bleu de Chanel.

Alex: Sure, that's--

Randy: Mm...

Alex: It's one of the major brands.

Randy: Yeah. Bleu de Chanel is our number one; that's our best one.

Alex: Okay, good. Good to know.

ON THE BIG MONEY $800: We'd take a couple of $1,000 bills from 1928 featuring this president, even if they were in nonconsecutive order
(Krishna: Who is Garfield?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
WHAT'S YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL? $400: Replace tomato juice with beef broth in a Bloody Mary & you've got this bovine shot

ON THE BIG MONEY $1000: The $10,000 note features this chief justice appointed in 1864

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jen: $4,200

Another signature for Randy with style:
Spoiler
Image
He only fell 73 shy of the number KJ had to create in regular play. Randy did get a plug in for Bleu de Chanel with Alex’s permission.
It was a rough game for the players with a combined Coryat of 15,200 not helped by Krishna up to 4600 after DD2 and down to minus 4200 after the DJ! round.

The tables were turned on Randy today who missed the FJ! clue after having a narrow lead when he won yesterday from a slim trailing position on a sole get.

The FJ! clue was a get for me as I picked the right ocean and from there I knew which province to write.
This happened to me playing the J!6 clues:

I just checked my wallet and Wilson is on the $100,000 bill.

Tough game for Krishna.

I was hoping Mick Jagger would come up in the singers category.

I didn't think it would be one on the east coast (and I'm not very certain of where all the Maritimes are) so that left me with only one guess.

After our lengthy discussion the other day of Vancouver, I hope TPH got this one correct.

Jen held back $20 on FJ when Randy's MSBIW was $199, costing her a win if she gets it wrong as well. A math error or just a big random number?

Krishna never recovered after he responded incorrectly on an easy DD.

I was close on FJ!, saying Vancouver instead of BC.

I kept hoping Krishna would claw back in; he was certainly a quiet Ying to Randy's enthusiastic Yang.

Speaking of Randy, I guess he had one of those moments? Because that had to be one of the easiest Canada clues ever - name this province on the Pacific coast.

Started with British Columbia, then considered the east coast, but which of the three or four provinces that border the Atlantic came first? BC seemed like the safe choice.

Marbury + Madison rings no bells whatsoever for me.

You're in Dutch Now was a total YEKIOYD. "Trommelar" doesn't sound remotely like "drummer" to me.

Also saw no way to figure out Lady Gaga in Singers for $400. Lots of female singes can be called "flamboyant".

Exhaustion from work made me totally derp this one. I forgot which ocean was which, and had no idea which direction Canada would have expanded in. And even then, I couldn't picture which territory was on which end of Canada. My mental map had Yukon and BC merged on the west, and something random and murky on the east. I spent the whole commercial break and FJ! music failing to piece together the map, leaving me without a guess at the last note.

Coryat: 39,000
48 R/0 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Hartford, John Marshall, Grover Cleveland (DD), Salmon P. Chase, Argentina and Chile, Cenozoic Era, probability, The Age of Innocence, War and Peace (DD), uncle, Billy Corgan, Fats Domino

If you recognize that Canada, like the U.S., expanded westwardly, this FJ! becomes pretty easy. With apologies to Randy, I have to say it's hard to make a worse guess than Saskatchewan.

I loved that Krishna went TDD early. He ended up flaming out spectacularly, but at least he fought against the dying of the light.

WHAT'S YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL $400
It's the canine name for this refreshing cocktail: vodka & grapefruit juice

Anyone have a problem with my crediting salty dog for greyhound? The only difference between the two is that the former has a salted rim, and I don't see anything in the clue that disqualifies my response.

I don't know booze, so I was pretty happy to get three of them. Tequila Mockingbird is one of those creative-the-first-time-you-hear-it-but-overused pub quiz names. Grasshopper also names a mint and chocolate ice cream. (Or maybe it's named that because of the alcohol? I don't know, but that's what I know it from.) And a regional chip company put out a Moscow Mule flavor. I tried it a while back, and googled it to see what it referred to. I guessed Hair of the Dog for the canine one. I don't drink, so I had never heard of any of the ones I missed.

what happened to the contestants? Yesterday was well-played, but there was enough trash today to score a lock win.
Hartford, John Marshall, Grove Cleveland DD, Salmon Chase, Chile/Argentina, Cenozoic, probability, War & Peace DD, Perseus, uncle, pride, Billy Corgan on the rebound, Fats Domino.
Had to go with the Pacific on FJ.
Judges: Circle of Life for Circle of Being?
I never read War & Peace either, but WECIB. Also, if a novel is referred to as a tome, it's pretty much either War & Peace or Atlas Shrugged.
