Awesome. I spent a couple of hours on it while procrastinating on marking exams, and the lack of commitment showed, with a 40% percentile score. On the other hand, I spent 2 minutes maximum on the "spreadable foods" 1DS and got 78th percentile. I guess I found my calling.

For those that answered square root of 12345678987654321 correct, is this something you just know or is there a relatively simple pen and paper way to figure this out? I couldn't see any real simple way to get this other than trial and error.

I think I got 5/12, and talked myself out of 2 other correct answers. I think these quizzes are super fun.

That was something that I sort of knew offhand - it appears on lists of "random facts" now and then (along with stuff like "only 1 out of 1 billion people will live to be 116 or older"). If you don't know how to calculate a square root by hand (https://xlinux.nist.gov/dads/HTML/squareRoot.html, if you're curious), then you could play "higher or lower" until you came up with the answer (i.e. 100,000,000 is too low, 120,000,000 is too high, etc.), or you could realize, for example, that 11 x 11 = 121, and if you were to multiply that by hand, it would look like this:

Code: Select all

  11
 x11
-----
  11
 11
-----
 121
Continuing the pattern:

Code: Select all

   111
  x111
------
   111
  111
 111
------
 12321
So 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 would get you 12,345,678,987,654,321

Yes, once you see the pattern, you realize that the highest digit represents the number of ones in the multiplicands. So, a nine in the center means a nine-digit number.

I am still suffering from the after effects of the "Musical Numbers" One Day Special. I CANNOT get Train's "50 ways to say goodbye" out of my head, and it has been a week.

Should we begin organizing a new Rundle in the Jundle for LL77?

I upgraded my membership so I can participate this time. I will be traveling from May 10 to May 24; I should have consistent WiFi access, but I will probably Advance Access the first few games of the season when I can, especially since I will be in time zones to which I'm not accustomed, and I would hate to get my first-ever forfeit because I couldn't log in or got confused about which day it was.

Hey, we have almost a whole week this time! Although the two-person version in LL75 was a fascinating experiment. I am looking forward to it for LL77!

Had I moneyed Q4 instead of Q1, I would've won the Traveling in China 1DS. As it is, I finished 5th. The whole thing was pretty wheelhouse-y for me. I've been to several places there, and those I haven't been to, I know people who have. And I lived in Q1's answer for 2 1/2 years! Brought back lots of great memories.

I figured you'd do well in that one. I felt pretty good about getting 5 right for 66%ile given the fact that, apart from a week spent in Shanghai, I haven't traveled in China at all. Had I moneyed Avatar or not guessed at Grotto for Karst, I could've done better.

I have never seen one second of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I got three questions right. They were Jeter, The Contest, and Arafat/Rabin.

Yet somehow I finished in the 56th percentile.

Finished in 5th place in Triathlon! I'd better enjoy this now, because I've NEVER come that close on any other 1D before.
Now swimming in the J! pool.

It's always worrisome when a site is down as long as LL's been down (since at least 7 this morning Central Time).

It is somewhat reassuring to know the problem isn't on my end
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Seems to be a bit more than first thought:

http://learnedleague.com/temp.htm

The important part:

Saturday, May 5, 8:01pm PT
Earlier this evening, I was informed by the LL's hosting company that, due to a catastrophic data loss event at the company's data center where LL is hosted, the entire contents of the LL website (files, database, and configurations) have been totally lost, with no possibility for retrieval.

However, much (but unfortunately not all) of the LL site and data is backed up locally, so I am using those backups to rebuild the LL website and database. Given the magnitude of that effort, and with the aim of acting conservatively to minimize issues, the league is presently on an unplanned (and from my perspective, extremely undesired) hiatus. I will update as frequently as I can here (and on Twitter), but my current plan is to push everything back by about 2 weeks.

This isn’t the first time he has had server issues. Hope he can get it straightened out soon with minimal loss of data.
