CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Ranjani Sheshadri is a high school English teacher who also coaches Model United Nations. Now that sounds like fun. Tell me about it.
Ranjani: It is. We get to represent a country at a regional competition. They always like to pick North Korea. But they get to kind of learn about the culture, and they learn how the U.N. works, and they learn about the procedure, so it's kind of fun for them.
Alex: Okay, good for you.
Alex: Steve Mond is a math teacher from Utah. We all have teachers that have had a special influence in our lives. You had one who taught math and what else?
Steve: Math and science in seventh and eighth grade--seventh, eighth and ninth grade. William Fitzgibbon. Walter Reed Junior High, North Hollywood, California.
Alex: And how was he special to you?
Steve: He made me feel like anything I was gonna learn, I already knew, I just had to find it.
Alex: Good for you.
Steve: Thank you.
Alex: And for him.
Alex: Jake Allen from Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Couple of your students pulled what you have described as a very sophisticated prank on you. What was it?
Jake: Yeah, they over the course of months took small strips of Scotch tape, and would place them one day at a time over my classroom loudspeaker, so that one day, you know, in the spring of the year, I just thought, "Why can I not hear the announcements?" And they burst into laughter. And they told me what they did, and I congratulated them on it.
Alex: Okay. Right.

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I had zero expectation the players would get the J.K. Simmons show on Starz. It’s worth seeing the magic of the star doing both meek & macho.
Ranjani opened the DJ! round with 2800 and after the five clues in SHAKESPEARE’S PEOPLE she was up to 9600 thanks to the run.
The FJ! clue was not for me. All I managed to write was lame duck to avoid a blank page. With Learned League think time I’m sure I would have got to it eventually. Political terms in only 30 seconds is more often than not going to be trouble.
The game produced two semi-finalists although just as easily it could have been a sweep. Ranjani was at 15600 after DD3 but managed to drop to 12000 for the FJ! round. She of course had no way of knowing staying pat at 12K would have done the trick.
Others with the possibility of betting zero (or not quite as much as they did) and moving on:
That had to be a tough 3 games for Erika to sit through waiting to find her fate.

Better clue today: the final gave the very situation for a pocket veto. I'll take 3/5 in a tough week.

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I reasoned my way through the clue and came up with "silent veto." I'm sure I have heard the correct phrase somewhere but there was no way I was pulling it. Probably unusual to have a FJ answer be a phrase only asked for four times in the Archive. (And each of those times, contestants were spotted one of the two words.)

Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Tough break for Ranjani on that FJ wager. She couldn't know that no one hit $20,000 all week, so a modest wager would have kept her around for next week.
A little surprised that it was a sole get, however. (And at least it wasn't another movie related clue!).

I avoid the box of shame tomorrow by getting this one. It isn't a term you hear very often, so it was a little tough.
Re: Friday, May 11, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Of all categories, I ran the Old School one. Also the Words one. Would've run the Music category too, but I was a hair slow on Losing My Religion = REM.
Lach Trash: ditto, quack
No way was I getting this. Absolute NHOI on the final response.

Almost nothing is more frustrating than when you know the answer, you know you know the answer, but for whatever reason, you're unable to come up with it. I don't know why pocket veto refused to come to me here.

Garth Brooks kept me from running it. "The River" made me initially think Bruce Springsteen, but wrong genre, and wrong decade.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Fri May 11, 2018 7:27 pm Of all categories, I ran the Old School one. I was proud to go 5/5 in the '90s music hits category, but I was worried that it would not be finished. I was also happy to get the Lach trash on Antares.
I got FJ after about 5 seconds.

Now THIS is the kind of FJ I expect in a Teachers' Tournament. Too bad about Ranjani, I was hoping she'd pull out the win after running Shakespeare and coming up with "syzygy".

According to this from August 2016, the last time the pocket veto happened was under Bill Clinton, who did it once in eight years.

Ugg. That's what I get for watching when I'm not 100% focused. Locked in executive order and kicked back. Closer reading of the clue alone would've told me I was wrong (plus I KNOW Washington is credited with the first one).
Chris Gaines for Garth Brooks?
Edit: There always seems to be a clue related to where I vacation shortly after I have one. I would've gotten Jacobs anyway, but the attached made it more amusing than it should've been.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I'll join Bamaman and avoid the box of shame with this one. I was a little worried that the expression sounded too cute to have been coined in the early 1800's - did they even have pockets in those shiny tight pants and lace-festooned coats? I know the idea is the POTUS "puts it in his pocket" and lets the clock run out but I don't think it's a real thing in the Constitution, or otherwise by that name. Why not a "codpiece veto"? It sounds like something made up by a journalist in this century.
Too bad about the situational overbet by Ranjani but a $2K or $4K safety bet would have normally been risky.
I loved the pronunciation of Pleiades. But then I say Illinoizzz, and ConneCt-icut, and Hawa-ya for those three states and flip-flop on Missourie-Missourah depending on usage.
