Ugghh, I start off with a big sheep on the first Q, then get a wrong answer compounded on the massive sheep for Olympia. How I'm not in last place is a surprise.

I thought Grace Slick was going to sheep for sure on the first one. Also thought Joel Osteen would rack up a lot of points.

Oh, and Ann Margret looked sooooo familliar. I just couldn't dredge her out. Woulda picked her for sure if I could have.

...Because I've sheeped three times and then went and missed on the strip (was guessing; I know nothing about Las Vegas and needed my drop and sheep elsewhere). Oh well.

Archbishop Sheen had one of the top rated TV shows in the 50s on the old Dumont network with "Life is Worth Living." He's still referenced a lot in Catholic circles, and there are lots of Youtube videos of his episodes available. That said, I was shocked he almost sheeped and Mother Angelica (founder of EWTN) was a singleton.

707 - CALIFORNIA

Answer a question about wine.
  • In what European language is wine known as krasi?
  • What 60 Minutes commentator once scoffed that people who know a lot about wine usually don't know much about anything else?
  • In what country of the Caucusus is wine believed to have been invented?
  • What color wine is produced from pinot noir, merlot, gamay, and cabernet sauvignon?
  • What is the occupational title of the person who makes wine barrels?
  • What New England state (which still has a pentagonal JCPenney store) has the highest per-capita consumption of not only wine but total alcohol in the U.S.?
  • What country is famous for its Niagara and Okanagan grapes?
  • What derogatory three-letter term is used to describe wines such as Thunderbird, Wild Irish Rose, and Mad Dog 20/20?
  • In a fancy restaurant, what would be the French-derived title of the person who maintains the wine list?
  • What European country is the world's leading producer of wine?

708 - ILLINOIS

Chicago is one of the most important corporate centers in the U.S., and Downstate has a large number of well-known companies also.
  • Give the one-word name of the company that for decades was the largest retailer in the US; built its headquarters in the world's tallest building at that time; and now oversees its demise from Hoffman Estates.
  • What insect-named maker of heavy equipment that recently moved its headquarters from Peoria to Deerfield is the second largest manufacturing company in the Prairie State?
  • Matt Damon starred in the movie "The Informant" about an extortionate whisteblower at this Illinois agribusiness giant. His scheme unraveled because of a change in area code! (Initials are fine.)
  • Like a good neighbor, this Bloomington-based insurer is there.
  • What major airline is headquarted in the Willis Tower, not far from the arena to which it owns the naming rights?
  • This one-word company advertises its location as the corner of Happy and Healthy, but its headquarters is actually in Deerfield.
  • What Oak Brook-based chain is famous for its golden arches?
  • What one-word brand name was number one in tube radios and flip phones before those businesses went kaput?
  • What Goose Island-based Mars subsidiary makes Skittles, Starburst, Big Red, Doublemint, Hubba Bubba, and Excel (the last of which is not software).
  • Nothing runs like this Moline-based company famous for its green farm machinery.

Only three problems with guessing Paul Robeson for J in the Canadian audio clue:

1) Robeson was American.
2) He couldn't even get into Canada to give a scheduled concert, because his passport had been revoked by the US State Department during the McCarthy era. He sang at the border.
3) In my opinion, Robeson has an even more thrilling basso profundo voice than the actual artist in J

On the next audio clue, I will be right, but I'm going to super-sheep it.

My Dad worked for Sears Roebuck for decades, and when I was a kid, practically everything in our home was from the Sears Catalog. They just shuttered their last retail store in Chicago, and just thinking about it makes me want to mix up a batch of Champipple.

I'm glad I at least got a chuckle in some people because this performance of mine is abysmal!

I listen to a podcast called "Stuff You Missed in History Class" and in the middle and the end of every year, they go over archaeological discoveries that happened in that year. I specifically remembered that there was a discovery about wine being discovered in Armenia. Turns out the first winery (and leather shoe) was found in a cave in Armenia, not just the first instance of wine. Drat!

Recently on perhaps Millionaire or Divided this came up and I knew it was one or the other (and not France or Germany) and I went the wrong way guessing when I should have gone with a different option all together. That will teach me to dip into wine which is not my area.

709 - NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR

RMS Titanic sank in 1912 not far off the coast of Newfoundland. Identify one of these people associated with the disaster. Some are real people who lived or died that night; some are people who made movies about the sinking. If opting for the cell with two people, name both. So only one person selected the Golden Bear and they misspelled his name. Or did you do that?
I thought about negging that but I know many people who pronounce Nicholas as Nick'las so no harm, no foul.
There is a Nicklaus Drive on my mail route and people frequently mail letters there spelling it that way. The machine still recognizes it.
