CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Andrew Lai is a medical student from East Lansing, Michigan, but you grew up in Canada, and there is a loose connection between you and me.

Andrew: A bit of a loose connection, yes. And what happened was, in high school, I was part of a Reach for the Top team. And I understand that you used to host that in the past, and as well I did the Geography Challenge, which you hosted as well. So I like to say that's how we have a bit of a tie.

Alex: All right. How well did you do in the Great Canadian Geography Challenge?

Andrew: Well enough to the provincials, but I didn't win it.

Alex: Okay. Good for you, though.

Alex: Hermine Vermeij from Tarzana, California. You're a librarian, but there is a fossil named for you?

Hermine: Yeah, well, my dad is a paleontologist, so he named a fossil snail genus after me.

Alex: Okay. I don't have any fossils named for me.

Hermine: You might have one.

Alex: Really? I am a fossil.

Alex: Josh Hill is our champion. In addition to his many talents, he writes rap songs.

Josh: It's always fun when I'm working as a network engineer, and I can go into the office and I can just say, "Yo, I do BGP and a lot of other rhymes, I'm always NTP 'cause my flow's always on time." And then just go right back to work.

Alex: Okay. We'll do that.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
NAMING MY BABY GIRL FOR GRANDPA $1000: If his name is this, French for "reborn", just add an extra "E" at the end

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Josh: $8,400
Hermine: $3,800
Andrew: $3,800

Hermine opened with the run in MUSICAL GROUPS.

Alex: …You found your niche.
Hermine: That was the one.

No, she was correct on a lot of other stuff too. Her one ring-in error was giving the work instead of the author to set up Josh for a $600 rebound.

Hermine’s other error was reversed at ART & ARTISTS $800: Whistler gave musical titles to his paintings; twilight & night scenes were call this, from the French for “night”

Hermine gave nuit and Josh rebounded the expected response of nocturne. The judges erased the neg, but she did not get a correct response for it.

I READ YOU LOUD & CLEAR! $1000: “’Only two kinds of daughters,’ she shouted in Chinese. ‘Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind!’”

Josh went the wrong way and Andrew rebounded it. For a lesser value I would have tossed the coin while for bottom box I stayed calm.

The FJ! clue responses (wrong & right) were the three names I had in play. I did not have the common sense to pick the right guy as I kept it simple going for the level one name instead of going up the ladder. It’s my own fault as I should by now have a better grasp on identifying book publishing years and death year ranges.

For example:
Spoiler

#7536, aired 2017-05-22 RUSSIAN CULTURE $2000: The "Father of Russian Literature", this poet & dramatist was mortally wounded in a duel in 1837
#6626, aired 2013-06-10 EUROPEAN POETS & POETRY $2000: In 1837 he was killed in a duel by Baron Georges d'Anthes, who was expelled from Russia for the incident
#6178, aired 2011-06-22 LITERARY CROSSWORD CLUES "P" $800: Russian writer who came to shove, 1799-1837 (7)
#4813, aired 2005-07-06 GIVE IT A "PUSH" $2000: A major literary award is named for this man who died in 1837
#3865, aired 2001-05-25 THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! $1000: This Russian poet & author of the drama "Boris Godunov" died from wounds suffered in a duel in 1837

#7536, aired 2017-05-22 RUSSIAN CULTURE $400: This epic novel was first published in its entirety in 1869 under the title "Voyna i Mir"
#6696, aired 2013-10-28 THINGS TO DO TODAY $400: Make a dent in this 1,400-page Tolstoy novel, issued in complete form in 1869
#6312, aired 2012-02-14 A FEW THINGS HAPPENED IN 1865 $400: This Tolstoy novel was published in separate parts from 1865 to 1869; it probably took that long just to print one copy
#5868, aired 2010-03-03 THE AUTHOR TWITTERS $200: Da, "War and Peace" published in complete form 2day. Liking 1869. Is very good year
#4699, aired 2005-01-27 NOVELS $400: Even the epilogue is lengthy in this 1869 Tolstoy epic; it comes out in 2 parts &, in our copy, is 105 pages long
#3983, aired 2001-12-19 ORIGINAL TITLES $400: Leo Tolstoy 1869: "All's Well That Ends Well"

#6393, aired 2012-06-06 BORN & DIED: AUTHORS EDITION $1200: Born in Moscow November 11, 1821, gave "Notes From the Underground", headed underground February 9, 1881
#2865, aired 1997-01-31 RUSSIAN WRITERS $400: He completed "The Brothers Karamazov" shortly before his 1881 death in St. Petersburg
Joining the incorrect response of two of the stage players is little solace. The judges would have had fun with Hermine’s double E spelling of her guy and so would the online “judges” so good thing it was the wrong writer.

For the “What If” game: Andrew bets the farm on DD2 to have 14800 for the FJ! round. Josh with his actual 21995 would drop to 14389 on a miss, so Hermine in this scenario of third place could bet low to nothing and win.

As is Josh earned a 5th win and a relaxed path to the TOC. Whether he is number 2 on the tracker only behind Rob or 4th when including the tournament winners does not matter as now he knows a sufficient number of players cannot pass him to knock him out.

Josh is G-R-R-REAT!

Seriously, it looks like he's having fun out there under the lights. Very likable champion.

Somewhat surprised that no one got final today, but hey. The game was in general a touch on the easy side, and the players cleared both boards handily.

Russian author who died (and was probably killed by someone else) would have to be Pushkin. 2/2 for the week

I also bit on Tolstoy after a brief detour on "what czar would that be?"

And it didn't affect the outcome, but Andrew needed to go all in on that DD - he's a med student and it's a science question and he's in third place with Josh continuing to roll. But really, all credit to Josh - who knows when to go small when necessary, etc.

I think the interesting "what if" game is imagining a slightly larger DD3 wager from Josh. He loses $100 instead of $5, and Hermine ends up with exactly 2/3 of his score for that triple stumper final.

I had the same FJ response as Hermine, though I doubt my spelling would have counted anyway.

There seemed to be an edit after Josh said Willis Tower. I wonder if it was negged to begin with and then accepted.

Congrats to Josh on making the TOC.

Music is far from my niche, but I went 5/5 despite not being able to name any songs by them.

Now you can name "Everyday People" by Sly & the Family Stone and "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" by Bad Company, right. :)

4/5 for me as the last song is familiar but for naming the group (forgive me music fans for I have sinned) I had no idea whether to go for Bad Company or Bad Finger. If I had known it's Badfinger that would have helped me go the other way.

Yesterday Alex asked Josh to explain the tiger paw thing and got a pretty low-key response. Today, Alex himself entered with the gesture--he 's not letting it go! Looks like Josh is a strong enough player that Alex'll have plenty of chances ahead to get the fur flyin'. We're very much enjoying Josh's run.

Same here, I think. From the couch, I said Buck. But even as I said it I thought, nah, it's probably Tan. So under the lights, this could've been a thing where I rang in intending to give the wrong response but switched to the right one before speaking. Alternatively, under the lights, this could've been a thing where I rang in and said, "What is Oregon?"

Loved all three players. Definitely impressed by Josh. At no point does it feel as though he is dominating, yet when I look at the scores, the man is killin' it.

I knew Tolstoy and Dostoevsky were too late for this FJ. Ditto Chekhov. So I tried to think of an earlier Russian writer. Pushkin came to mind as a possible fit and I penciled him in with no confidence. A little more thinking brought Gogol to mind. (Gogol, it turns out, died in 1852, so he's in the chronological ballpark.) Didn't like Gogol better than Pushkin so stuck with the right response. Was more surprised than pleased to find out I was correct. This one seems like a toughie. I'll be interested to see how it polls and who else got it. Besides Vanya, of course. :D

I would have been tempted to wager 8k on the Art DD in Josh's spot. But I never even thought of Dali. I went with Duchamp, with Picasso as my second guess.

I told myself that the year was too early for Dostoyevsky and just right for Pushkin...but still went with the former, simply because he seemed more likely to be the correct response to a regular show FJ. I knew Pushkin died in a duel, but that was not going to help me on the clue.

A lucky guess with Pushkin, but I knew enough of the time frames of the other possible Russians to eliminate them.

I think it was useful to know. It does still leave Lermontov, but probably not famous enough for FJ.
I'm smart and I want respect.
