Game Recap for Show #7778, 2018-06-06

CONTESTANTS
Sharron Jenkins, an online E.S.L. teacher from Missouri City, Texas
Michelle Rosen, a Ph.D. candidate from Cambridge, Massachusetts
Joe Castro, a comptroller from Pasadena, California (whose 1-day cash winnings total $9,384)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I know what you're thinking. Because we had a few weeks in a row in which players were winning big sums of money, averaging well over $20,000 per day, you think that we decided to toughen up the Finals--as was the case yesterday and the day before--in order to save money. Not at all true. Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it doesn't. Let's hope it works for the players today. Joe, Michelle, and Sharron, good luck. Let's go to work right now in the Jeopardy! Round. And here are the categories...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
A JOURNEY OF YOUR PIERS (5/5)
AROUND THE HOUSE (4/5)
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (4/5)
"CO"-OPERATIVE (3/5)
WORLD HISTORY (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
COMIC RELIEF (3/3)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Michelle: 13 R (including 2 rebounds and 1 DD), 0 W
Sharron: 6 R, 2 W
Joe: 5 R, 2 W

Clues revealed: 28
Triple Stumpers: 4
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $2,800

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Michelle found the Daily Double on the 7th clue. Joe had $200, Michelle had $1,800, and Sharron was at $600. Michelle wagered $1,000.

WORLD HISTORY $1000: In the 400s B.C. Greek cities like Thebes & Megara had not a monarchy but this form of rule by a small group

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Michelle: $4,000
Joe: $1,000
Sharron: $600

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Sharron Jenkins is an ESL teacher. She's from Missouri City, Texas. Now, you're a retired public school teacher who taught Spanish, history and theater. Who are your ESL students mostly?

Sharron: They're in China, meaning I have to get up at 4:00 in the morning to get ready to teach them.

Alex: So this is an online course.

Sharron: Online.

Alex: And how long have you been doing this?

Sharron: Since--mm, about 5 months now.

Alex: That's wonderful. Okay, good for you.

Alex: Michelle Rosen is a Ph.D. candidate who builds tiny, flying robots. What are we talking about here?

Michelle: Yeah. So my Ph.D. research is in the field of fabrication and control and dynamics of flapping wing--robots, so they're insect-scale. My robot weighs about 3 grams, so it can fly and has everything on board.

Alex: Have you been approached by the CIA yet? Because--

Michelle: No.

Alex: They have some of those, you know. Are you familiar with--

Michelle: Debatable.

Alex: I saw them. They had them. And they probably still do.

Alex: Joe Castro from Pasadena. First book you bought yourself was...

Joe: The Hobbit.

Alex: And it's still one of your favorites.

Joe: One of my all-time favorites.

Alex: Really?

Joe: Yeah.

Alex: Do you re-read it?

Joe: Every year.

Alex: Yeah?

Joe: So disappointed with the movies.

Alex: Well, enough of that.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"CO"-OPERATIVE $600: A word meaning respected or venerated adds "co" & becomes this word meaning "found again"

"CO"-OPERATIVE $1000: A university administrator is given a "co" & gets this newer, holier job

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME $200: That's neat-o keen:
____-dandy

AROUND THE HOUSE $1000: The name of this piece of home furniture can also mean a table holding sacramental vessels
(Joe: Ah... what's a tabernacle?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Michelle: $7,800
Sharron: $1,600
Joe: $800

Michelle: 5 R (including 1 DD), 2 W

Clues revealed: 27
Triple Stumpers: 7
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $10,000

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Joe snagged the next Daily Double on the 3rd clue. Joe had $2,000, Michelle had $7,800, and Sharron was at $1,600. Joe made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,000.

LITERARY OOPS! $1200: Shakespeare's King John says, "The thunder of my" this big gun "shall be heard", 200 years before its invention

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Michelle who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 23rd clue. Joe had $8,800, Michelle had $8,600, and Sharron was at $8,000. Michelle wagered $3,000.

THE SCIENCE OF MECHANICS $2000: Newton's 1st Law of Motion, known as the Law of this, is why a car crash throws you into the windshield--buckle up!
(Alex: With less than a minute to go.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LITERARY OOPS! $2000: At the end of "Jurassic Park", the island is attacked by this country's military, abolished in the 1940s

A HARRY CATEGORY $2000: Appointed in 1970, this Supreme Court justice ultimately became one of the most liberal on the court

KING JAMES BIBLE COMMON WORDS $400: This conjunction begins many a sentence, including verses 2 through 26 of Genesis 1

(Sharron: What's Jericho?)

THE SCIENCE OF MECHANICS $800: This term specifies a physical reference point for an object; ballet uses the term for specific postures

PRIZE PACKAGES $2000: $100,000 & a bronze medal inscribed with the fundamental principles of the Roman architect Vitruvius

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Michelle: $13,600
Joe: $9,200
Sharron: $8,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
GAMES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Michelle: Wager $4,801 to cover Joe.
Joe: You ought to wager to cover Sharron, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $9,200. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $6,800 (to shut out Sharron) or less than $400 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Sharron). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Michelle.
Sharron: Considering that you're going to lose on a Triple Stumper by at least $800, you need to bet either $1,201, and play for a win if Joe tries to two-thirds Michelle, or bet at least $5,601 to cover Michelle's $0 bet (though, from this position, a wager of all $8,000 is acceptable and perhaps preferred).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Names used in other languages for this chess piece include malka, rainha & rouva

FINAL SCORES
Sharron: $8,000 + $5,700 = $13,700 (What is Queen?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Joe: $9,200 + $9,199 = $18,399 (What is the queen?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Michelle: $13,600 + $4,801 = $18,401 (What is the Queen?) (New champion: $18,401)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $12,800

GAME DYNAMICS
Image

CORYAT SCORES
Michelle: $12,600, 18 R (including 2 DDs), 2 W
Joe: $8,400, 14 R (including 1 DD), 2 W
Sharron: $8,000, 12 R, 3 W
Combined Coryat: $29,000

BATTING AVERAGES
Michelle: 19/60 = .317
Joe: 15/59 = .254
Sharron: 13/58 = .224
Team: 47/63 = .746

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
WORLD HISTORY $800: This bonnie hopeful to the throne spent less than 18 months in the British Isles in his life, 1720 to 1788
[As Alex reads the clue, he gives the dates as 1920 to 1988, acknowledging the error after the selection of the next clue.]

A JOURNEY OF YOUR PIERS $400: As seen here, a jetty in Lake Kawaguchiko offers a spectacular view of this peak

A JOURNEY OF YOUR PIERS $600: Daniel Burnham's early 20th century plan for this city included Navy Pier
(Sharron: What is Baltimore?)
(Joe: What is New York?)
...
(Alex: Less than a minute now.)

A JOURNEY OF YOUR PIERS $1000: The solar-powered Ferris wheel is a highlight of the pier of this L.A.-area community
(Sharron: What is Venice Beach?)

COMIC RELIEF $600: In 2017 her "Project" came to an end on Hulu with the series finale episode, "It Had to Be You"
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

KING JAMES BIBLE COMMON WORDS $2000: Thou wilt not fail to know this olde synonym for "will" that occurs in 9 of 10 commandments
(Michelle: What is shall?)

THE SCIENCE OF MECHANICS $1600: (Kelly of the Clue Crew shows a load being pulled up a hill on the monitor.) A common example in mechanics is the use of an inclined plane to raise a load; measured in joules or in foot-pounds, this is equal to force times distance

COMICS RELIEF $2000: T'Challa, AKA this superhero, was introduced in 1966 in a Fantastic 4 book; he hit the big screen in 2018
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

First name only acceptables: Elvis, Oprah and with today's game the dancing talk show host.

COMIC RELIEF had a recent name in the news with the "Full Frontal" clue. Also timely was PRIZE PACKAGES with the crown/scholarship/salary contest clue.

GAMES was wide open and I was optimistic it would be something I've played at some point. The clue greatly narrowed the options to six. My 16.67% chance was a hit as the ones chosen looked enough like other words I've seen. I'm glad the clue was not asking for the languages of those names.

A perfect victory for Michelle with 2/2 on DDs, solving the FJ! clue and making the proper wager.

Rainha (right or wrong) led me to royalty because it seemed to be the similar to the Spanish word Rey (and I guessed Rainha was Portuguese). From there the feminine ending led me to queen. 2/3

What's the record for most fails on a Final Jeopardy clue?

Rouva? I think that means horse. Must be the bishop!

You had a 1/6 chance to nail FJ! Malka, Rainha & Rouva all sounded like feminine names. Only chess piece that's feminine? The Queen!

Didn't recognize anything in World History.

Also can't say I recognize Aquaman.

Any reason I should know Pier for $200 was Baltic Sea? For all I know Lithuania is on Mars.

No idea where to even start on this FJ! None of the words sounded like anything to me. How the hell was this a triple get?

Rou- and rai- sound like they mean king, and -a is the feminine ending...let's go with queen. Instaget FJ. Portuguese for rainha seems like a good bet but if they had asked us for the languages, I'd still be staring at the screen.

Three perfectly good comics clues left to die. Enough with running out of time, we know you can fit all of the clues in!!

Because all three contestants knew or figured out the right answer?

I'm guessing it will poll in excess of 70% in a few days. Wouldn't surprise me if it went 80%.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

For those who just had to know what language "rouva" is from, there is this:

Turns out it's Finnish. Did anyone actually know that?

And French is reine, so that connection is easy.

It took me a while to see the resonance of rainha - I was stuck for a while thinking rouva was close to rook, and I also tried to see a word for horse in there somewhere - but once I did, I had enough time to scribble the right response. I wish I'd been smart enough like others to notice the feminine ending thing!

Going off the two r words, I said rook. Then "rainha" sounded like "ranee," which led me to switch to queen. Then, on the principle that one's first impression is probably correct, I switched back to rook.
I'm going to neg myself on the weekly poll.
Teems with quiet fun.

That's how I got it. The clue might as well have said "malka, kween & rouva".

I wish we could have seen the rest of the comics clues.
