I’m going to have the first “I hope that’s close enough to count” answer of the tourney, because I spelled my 15-point response’s last name in the style of the garlic salt people.

I got Metamorphoses mixed up with Parallel Lives, darn. Until I looked more closely at MarkBarrett's answers, I thought I had the first perfecto of the SHC.

I would not have got that one except that it came up in discussion recently. Was it a clue on J! or was it something that came up on LL? I don't recall, but fortunately I recalled the answer.

The first day of the SHC and there's already a kid lit category? It's like Christmas in July!

I gave a response of "Ms. Frisby" because I couldn't remember if she was Miss, Ms., or Mrs. "Brisby" would have to be accepted, even if Ms. might not be.
Hoping for a third lap

She was named Frisby in the book and Brisby in the animated film.

She was named Frisby in the book and Brisby in the animated film.
And she wasn't a title character in the film.

PARALLEL
2: this one was fairly easy US history.

4: totally blanked on this one and went with a really stupid guess in "high jump". would've been better off just leaving it blank.

6: the only reason I know Blondie is because of my history teacher sophomore year, who used to play it frequently in class.

8: Euclid's Elements, easy.

10: almost wrote Petrarch instead of Plutarch before it hit me -- how silly!

NEWBERY MEDAL WINNERS
3: huge Wayside fan, so Holes came naturally.

6: i hadn't heard of the one and only ivan previously, but Fay Wray gave it away.

9: wow, there's a book i remember specifically because i really didn't like it!

12: almost wrote grimsby because i just watched the movie "the brothers grimsby" recently (spoiler: very bad, wouldn't recommend)

15: i'm like 40% sure i spelled her last name wrong, not sure if that'll count against me.

Parallel Bars and Gorilla were guesses. Johnny Tremaine was my only miss.

My scoring script doesn't appear to be working tonight. There might be a delay in getting the results up (but R1D2 should be coming up as scheduled).

Curse my deep in the weeds initial letter!! It's all down hill from here...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Indeed, with nowhere to go but down, I'm toying with the idea of taking my first day perfecto and going home.

Day 1: Had Euclid, clammed instead. Bah. Fay Wray didn't register with me until after I had submitted, when I watched an episode of Match Game '75 that mentioned her and King Kong in the same question. Still, not a bad start...

Day 2: This might be the first time during the entire time I've played the SHC that I only left one blank, which is an accomplishment for me (I usually leave more than that on the table). The psychology category was a cakewalk, as I still remembered a great deal of material from my MCAT studies, and the only one I blanked on was the Greek wine.

I was thrown by the 3, 6, 9, and 12 in RETAIN +1 ANAGRAMS having the +1 at the beginning (judgment call for "inertia," since the +1 is a repeat letter). Of course, simply knowing retsina would have been helpful, but my pattern-seeking mind disadvantaged me in finding a good answer by brute force.

Retsina. Darn my lack of knowledge when it comes to potent potables! Maybe this SHC will finally drive me to drink.

Darn that keratin! I got stuck on collagen, thought of nitrate and creatin but ruled those out as they aren't proteins. Otherwise a wheelhouse day for me.

A colleague of my husband co-authored a musical called Nobody Likes Retsina, and I initially thought that was a character's name--like Everybody Loves Raymond.

I'm sure it says something about me that the last one I got was latrine, the 3-pointer
