Several questions/comments:
How fussy are you going to be WRT Registry of Motor Vehicles vs. Department of Motor Vehicles? Different states call it different things and I don't know what CA calls it.
For the 8-pointer, are you looking for a German word? Could it be "uber"?
I am a life-long, practicing Catholic and I'm pretty sure I've never heard of whatever the answer to the 10-pointer is.

Teems with quiet fun.

Re: Summer Hiatus Challenge 2018--Round 3 Instant Replay (SPOILERS)
Nope, the German phrase written was "the Zugspitze, for example" and the Zugspitze is the tallest mountain in Germany, so the answer is the German word for mountain, which is "berg" (as in iceberg)
I WAGged "burse" as it tickled something in the back of my mind, but I have no idea how widely used that term is. In all the Catholic masses I've attended, the host is conveyed in a metal container that Google tells me is called a "Ciborum."I am a life-long, practicing Catholic and I'm pretty sure I've never heard of whatever the answer to the 10-pointer is.

My inner sacristan enjoyed the 10 point question. You see the burse less in the post Vatican II world, but in parishes where the Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass) is practiced or parishes that retain some of the old traditions, you'll see it more.Woof wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 11:51 amNope, the German phrase written was "the Zugspitze, for example" and the Zugspitze is the tallest mountain in Germany, so the answer is the German word for mountain, which is "berg" (as in iceberg)

@Woof: You might be thinking of the paten instead of the ciborium. The paten is a small plate that would hold the host during consecration and covers the chalice when brought to the altar. The burse and corporal veil (both same color) would go on top of the paten and pall. The ciborium is a larger, separate chalice-like vessel that would hold many hosts to be consecrated.

I could have picked up the 10-pointer if I had stared at the letters long enough to think a “bursa = sac” connection.

The percussionist in me is happy to see many of you get the Zildjian question correct.

It hasn't come up yet, I'm curious if "burg" will be accepted. In English "burg" and "berg" are pronounced the same, and it fits the category also.

In German, “berg” and “burg” mean very different things. Unless there’s a town somewhere called Zugspitze, I wouldn’t count it.seaborgium wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 1:46 pmIt hasn't come up yet, I'm curious if "burg" will be accepted. I know they mean different things; that may be a non-issue given that "burg" is also found in "Bruges" and that it isn't pronounced differently from "berg" in English.9021amyers wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 1:56 pmIn German, “berg” and “burg” mean very different things. I made the burg/berg mistake, as well, so perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm in favor of lenience in this ruling. After all, they do sound the same, which means I'd be credited with a correct response on the show.
As for the California DMV, their lines are legendary. When I was held up at gunpoint outside my Koreatown apartment in 1988, I tried to talk the robbers out of taking my license so I wouldn't have to stand in line at the DMV to get a replacement!

May I plead for leniency on Kcup instead of Keurig?

RE: berg, I specified that burg should be accepted only if we're playing by Jeopardy! rules (berg/burg sound close enough in English, though I think there's a difference in German - the e in berg pronounced like bear in English). Otherwise, no dice
I agree that burse is pretty obscure - I've never even heard of it - but I needed a 10-point question
I should have guessed with cymbals! WECIB. Immediately thought of Velma's song from Chicago, I Can't Do it Alone: 'Cymbals, crash, crash, crash!' then clammed

You say "as well," but you were the first to make it! I was merely speculating at the time that I posted that it could end up being an issue (after having to think about whether to respond "berg" or "burg").cinemaniax7 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 3:13 pm I made the burg/berg mistake, as well, so perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm in favor of lenience in this ruling. Zugspitze almost put me on the wrong track as the German made me think about whether this was some form of a train and I was trying to think how to get some form of "train" out of Bruges. But, synonyms for train led to funicular (among others) and funicular set off the geography bells. The wheels still turn - but slowly.

I typically only am on JBoard at work and last week was crazy-busy for me, so I missed all of Round 2. Happy to get back into Round 3, though! I really enjoyed both categories today; it was especially frustrating because I knew at least half of the B&A in each question, but couldn't pull the other half.

Ah, I butchered the Retronym category, some times giving the old word instead of the new word, and some times giving the new thing that triggered the retronym. Should've taken my time and thought it through better.
