Re: Monday, September 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The new opening had a lot going on to take in at a quick glance:
The season has just begun and I’m already in midseason form. Good enough to sweep the $1000 clues, solve all the DDs, 44/59 right and yet far off with another miss on the FJ! clue. My guess was Indonesia in picturing a bunch of island hopping and not thinking a single river cruise. My bad.
Isaac probably pictured his experience on J! going a little differently. He can be comforted by knowing even if he solved DD3 the game was still a loss.
Rick took care of business to get the ToC tracker warmed up.
Alex has the voting open for beard or no beard. This seems like a one-week stunt and he’ll probably be clean shaven next week.

Coryat: 35,600
49 R/4 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: invincible, Colorado, Missouri, Nehru, San Jose, Princeton (DD)
That was the eephus pitch of FJs, and it totally got me. I thought of Brazil first, but I figured that was too easy and that the Amazon was north of the equator. Ended up going with Argentina. In related news, TIL that the Rio de la Plata is actually fairly short (180 miles).
It didn't end up mattering, but Isaac really should have gone all in on DD3.

New Zealand, thinking maybe she went between the islands.
Also, there's no reason for me to not know the Ivy League schools automagically.
Boy am I rusty.

I fell for the same eephus pitch... Decided on Australia, given the English-sounding name of the kayaker (ist?). Didn't know whether the Aussies had any long-enough rivers, but that's what I went with. Then back to the dugout I went, dragging my bat behind me... Looked at the map just now, and a LOT more of Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere than I thought!BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Mon Sep 10, 2018 5:17 pm ... Nice obscure baseball reference, btw. I suppose that since all three contestants nailed it, they went all Ted Williams on that eephus pitch.
p.s. what is TIL? Been on his board and many others, but don't remember seeing that acronym...
Looked THAT up just now... and today I learned that TIL is for "today I learned". I guess I learned that today... Okay, I'll stop now.

Considered Brazil, but talked myself into Indonesia, figuring she ocean kayaked around the islands.
Thought a picture of Federer extremely easy for $1000. On the other hand false Dimitri’s and The Disaster Artist I thought pretty obscure in DJ.

I keep telling myself I'l re-memorize them, and then I forget. It took every last nanosecond of Isaac's struggles to pull out PrincetonMinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Mon Sep 10, 2018 5:21 pm Also, there's no reason for me to not know the Ivy League schools automagically.
First game of the season and we're already getting LTaM warnings with 8 clues left on the board, in a game that wasn't moving slowly. *sigh* At least they were able to blitz thru the rest of the clues in both rounds with only one clue left behind between them.
It took 25 seconds of Think music for it to click that they were hinting at a 2000-mile river, and not just a large country. An eephus pitch indeed, but I managed to hack at it for a ground ball single.
Alex...no. That beard....no.

I have to admit I'm shocked at how many people are already saying they missed this one. Good to have the show back.

Score another one for Australia.
Too many bad misses in DJ! by me let to a lackluster Coryat of $21,800.
ETA: The intro shows the date September 21, 2001. Points to whomever can pinpoint that date's significance in Jeopardy! history.

I did badly, although I did get FJ.
I'll make a deal: Alex gets to keep his beard if Stephen Colbert gets rid of his.
