Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I saw the reversal coming immediately on 3 "E"s $1600 as it was easy to count the Es in Monica's response and know the judges would end up taking it.
Allow me to blow the 100% on the FJ! clue right off that bat as I read the clue quickly, saw "penal" and "French" and instantly knew I hit a dreaded blank. I closed my eyes, took and breath, dismissed Lafayette & Talleyrand to arrive with a little time left to write "de Toqueville." De Tocqueville was as wrong as my spelling (plus he's 19th c.) and I never had the time to take in a second reading of the clue to see "capital punishment."
The players are at 100% for the week. No way they do it for five games, so I expect a miss tomorrow.
Julia and Austin featured today. I'll guess Buzzy and Brad tomorrow.

I had no idea Guillotin's name was not spelled with an e. After tonight, I'll probably remember .
But yeah, if I wrote down the answer instead of just saying it, I absolutely would've added that e.
I was surprised the neg for "engagement" for the "marriage and war" clue wasn't reversed. That seemed to fit the clue. Did I miss something in the clue?

The category was SIMILAR WORDS, which would call for 2 different words, not one word with two meanings.Vowela wrote: ↑Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:38 pm I had no idea Guillotin's name was not spelled with an e. After tonight, I'll probably remember .

I got Guillotin without the E.

Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Well, I guarantee that there would have been an uproar if they didn't take all 3 answers as being correct. I'd say that without the executive decision, there's no way they would have used the clue.
Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
"Night of broken glass" joins the "NHOI in the top box" pile. That whole category was entirely alien to me. (ETA: "Night of Broken Glass" has only one Archive hit, and "Kristallnacht" only two, both in the bottom box.
Mali = French also seemed tough for the top box.
I recognized literally nothing in the Movie/TV Role category, either.
Teetotaler/temperance was huge negbait IMO, since both have three E's. And they overturn "Green market" but not that?
Blah blah doctor + French + 1789 = Pasteur. Oops. I had no idea that the guillotine was named after someone.
Lach Trash: artificial insemination, marital/martial

Robespierre here as well. I could imagine him proposing an idea about capital punishment...

Maybe Lori can protest with the claim that accepting this response violates their clear and well-established rules on spelling/pronunciation. Making her own response wrong as well as the other two players would make her the winner.

What would be the basis for the uproar? I’m not denying there would be one, I’m only saying there shouldn’t be. And I’d rather they avoid the clue altogether than dumb it down and accept a wrong answer.OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 12, 2018 9:55 pmThis.

Even besides that, it was an easy decision. Spelling doesn't count on J! Guillotin could very well take an e, if you don't know the rules of French pronunciation.
I wavered over the spelling myself, but included the e, so I'm grateful...
Doesn't adding a wrong letter here make it only 10% wrong?.. .

Re: Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The easy way to fix this would have been to ask for the device, rather than his name.
In 1789 this doctor proposed 6 articles on penal reform to the French Assembly, including one on capital punishment
becomes
In 1789 the French Assembly received a proposal of 6 articles on penal reform, including one on capital punishment, from a doctor now famously associated with this invention
I don't know if that works with the FJ clue length, I'm sure there's a better way to write it than I chose, that may be a bit shorter, but I think it would be simple enough to do so. Maybe it's easier if you specifically call out the invention but it's playing pretty easy as it was so the difference may be negligible.

I guessed Marat. He was a physician and he was involved in the French revolution.
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.
