I was never getting this FJ. Warm-weather retreat made me think of summer and of more comfortable northern climes during that time of year. I kept trying to think of some sort of land sold to the US by a foreign country and came up empty. Even when Alex gave his little explanation before the reveals I was stumped. Blech.

Congrats to Erik on his second win. A Crossword Puzzle Master with a cool afro is someone I can definitely root for to go on another lengthy streak.

No luck on FJ. I did have an answer but I'm not sure if I want to reveal it yet. If someone else puts down what I did then I'll do so.

The year had me thinking of Nixon and California so I guessed on Palm Springs. Ms. Post seemed a likely socialite resident of that high-dollar neighborhood.

Flabbergasted by the four TS's on "Cowboys." Having grown up in Houston, Travolta was an easy get. But I thought every American schoolchild knew Gene Autrey wrote "Rudolph."

Ran Supreme Court, as law is in my wheelhouse. I would think the judges would accept just "Roe," "Brown," and "Citizens United" on those 3 clues.

? What is.......Guantanamo?

The "In the News" fit this, but I knew Gitmo was a legacy of the Spanish American War (or whatever). I'd have come closer to guessing Mar-a-Lago without the other parts of the clue. I'm surprised it stumped so many of the boardies so I think you have to know the connection to the Post family.

I knew they were going to choke on Gene Autry  .

Every American schoolchild probably did, between 1950 and 1960. I only knew because I'm a big Angels baseball fan.

This was one of the best-written FJ! clues in recent memory. The TOMs were all around, but you had to be paying attention and piece them together. What is a) a place mentioned particularly in recent news, b) that would be significant as a warm-weather presidential retreat, c) but would be privately owned, at least within the past few decades, and d) that has some discernible connection to Marjorie Post? Why, our current president's privately owned warm-weather retreat, Mar-A-Lago, of course.

There were some surprising negs/TSs today that make me question whether Erik is the buzzsaw I initially imagined he might be, but a runaway win is a runaway win. It'll be interesting to see how far he goes.

I completed it in ink with no mistakes while never being stumped for long or frustrated. For the things I did not know the crosses were reasonable to help with the solve.

The toughest thing for me was 16A: Accent sound? (4)
I'm not really a crossword solver, and admittedly I needed about an hour, but I came within one letter (51 across stumped me a bit and I misspelled 30 down as a result). The upper left corner took forever (flavoring issue). Since I work in ink, my grid is quite messy.

Yes, a good one. Tough one, though. Maybe not to someone who exercises this skill regularly. I'm quite impressed with Erik.

Was Mike sleeping through most of the game? That's a low score for someone who didn't make expensive wrong guesses. I don't know why, but I'm getting a lot of music TSes lately, and normally I don't get music right at all.

This is the first time I have heard of Marjorie Post. I thought she was some foreign leader I didn't know (so I never got to privately-owned). Is the Mar in Mar-a-Lago for her? I thought it was Spanish ("mar" = sea) since there's a "lago" (lake) in it too.

Perhaps if they had called it a "winter retreat" (since the media has been calling it the "winter White House") to make it clear when the actual retreating was happening, I may have had a chance.

I suspect that had someone said just Roe or Brown, there would have been an awkward pause. at least. The odds that anyone getting that far wouldn't know the rest of those case names is probably pretty low so it's probably a moot point.

All those pieces clicked together for me about 15-20 seconds in. Under the lights, I probably would not have remembered where the hyphens were, so I hope they would accept a hastily written "Mara-lago". :P

13:55 for me. So yeah, it was a pretty challenging one. Just barely worthy of pie.

Many thanks to you. I thought I was the only one who read this clue this way. I thought the wording could be interpreted either way, 1) a place in warm weather where people go to get away from the cold, or b) a place where people go to get AWAY from warm weather (like my late in-laws, who wintered in southern Florida and returned to Cleveland for the more moderate summers). Taking this clue the second way, I came up with nothing.

On the other hand, I picked up LT so fast at the end I could barely keep track of it. In addition to Lupercalia and the Checker cab in the first round, right at the end I scooped up Drugstore Cowboy, John Travolta, Gene Autry, spider, and Modeste Mussorgsky. Those alone gave me $8,200 from the fourth podium, enough to top Mike and Joanna and enough to keep Erik from having a lock game.

Mike played well but revealed one glitch common to cruciverbalists. He knew the term "Gila monster" (probably from seeing it in writing) but apparently had never heard it pronounced, so he said it with a hard-G sound instead of "Heela" monster. I've done that any number of times, including the first time I saw the name of Monaco (in my teens) and pronounced it "Muh-KNOCK-coh").

Ran the categories: "Down," 8, ThreE-letter words."

Great game for me except for that pesky FJ.

Yes, same here. I thought maybe it was my native Michigan bias, where people migrate to Florida for the winter as their cold-weather retreat.

The official line is that the resort is so named because it reaches from Palm Beach (mar) to the Intercoastal Waterway (lago), but I wouldn't be shocked if the Marjorie thing also had something to do with it. I also had no idea who she was prior to this clue.
