The biggest laugh of the game was not due to the players or Alex and instead the goats in the video clue.
The year was enough to solve the FJ! clue. The work was overdue since the previous appearance in a clue was October 10 of this year.
Maggie had no way of knowing she could have sat on her 12700 and moved on to the semis. Instead Rohan claimed WC4.

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Because I'm a smartass, I'd be tempted to say something like "Successor of the Prince of the Apostles" instead of Pope just to make the judges look up the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church's full title and go, "Yeah, that's right."
Also kinda shocked I was able to run the video games category--my interests tend more towards building games (SimCity, Dwarf Fortress, The Sims), flight simulators, sports management games, and Nethack. Definitely none of the stuff that came up today.
(also also communism is by definition stateless--the Soviet Union definitely never claimed to have achieved communism, because they knew once they did the whole ideological justification for the Bolshevik state's existence would collapse)

0/5 in Which Came First and Teen Titans, along with the history category in DJ!
I got the angle clue.
Lach Trash: red, fainting goat, shy
No guess on FJ! Lord of the Flies comes up all the time, but it seems to have a different TOM every time. Didn't recognize the shell thing at all.

No on today's FJ. Lord of the Flies just didn't come to mind. That year made it difficult for me to think of anything feasible.

No, Autumn is definitely Ravenclaw.
If she is reading posts on this board this will get her to respond.

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Go Autumn!!
Finally we get a contestant out of SW Missouri! And she did great even though there was not a possum or moonshine related question in the bunch!
The FJ demanded familiarity with the work. I doubt if the teens knew it as a Jeopardy staple, or strictly by the year. I couldn't get Kurt Vonnegut out of my mind even though I knew he was Yankee. The "shell" TOM took me into WW2, and I wasn't tempted by Catch 22.
This was another game with a chance for 3 qualifiers. Autumn got a tough DD (Pan, really?), and then a softball with the Arch showing in the pic.
Funny about Opus' meme - me and twelvefootgirl just re-watched the first two Harry Potter movies this weekend after a 16 year timeout. They only got 160 points for beating Voldemort so I think the penguin is too generous!

"British? Hmm...shell? Beach...*conjures a mental image*...Lord of the Flies? Yeah, 1954 sounds about right." *shrug* They all count.

LOTF was an involuntary precall; still I can't quite believe they dipped into that well yet again...
I suppose Maggie was thinking of a different kind of shell. Glad nobody guessed All Quiet on the Western Front...

That last Remarque was uncalled for.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Re: Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Upon that particular response, I was hoping she would've instead said "Philosopher's Stone," if for no other reason than to elicit a "we'll accept that" from Alex.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Nov 13, 2018 9:43 pmNo, Autumn is definitely Ravenclaw.
If she is reading posts on this board this will get her to respond.
From the couch this evening, I gave the thumbs-up to Autumn's all-business approach; it recalled how both Matt Jackson and Niki Peters handled matters three seasons ago. At the mid-first round break, Alex's setup had me worried - but when he handed it off to Autumn, she took it in stride, with grace and aplomb. Seeing that impelled me to find something the show put out several years ago - a compilation of the interviews of Dana Venator, finalist in the very first Teen Tournament all the way back in February 1987.
I don't have a link to a source, but I seem to recall that even now, Alex noted Dana as one of the most memorable contestants ever to grace Stage 10 (or its predecessor in Burbank, as is the case here). I think Venator also has a singular distinction in the show's history - the only player to win a tournament game and not advance (or in the case of a final, win the event).
Back to matters current: we've got a great set of semifinalists - like a far more well-known nine, they'll square off ruthlessly in public over the next three episodes and the two-day total-point affair, but have the utmost respect for each other as people.

There was also Andy Richter, who was unable to continue in the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational due to his participation in The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.
ETA:
Dana's J!Effect story (which was posted during the last Teen Tournament) begins "If you ask Alex to pick his favorite contestant from his 30-plus years on the show, Dana Venator is a name that is always near the top of the list.".

And possibly a Seniors Tournament player in 1988 who, between the QF and SF tapings, was found to have been on WoF too recently and disqualified from playing further: https://www.apnews.com/96ff37aa0cb424c0e2a294122718a722 (The language of the article could reasonably be interpreted as indicating he was a wild card rather than a winner, though. Whatever the case, my understanding is that the fifth highest scoring non-winner became a wild card semifinalist as a result.)cheezguyty wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 12:29 amThere was also Andy Richter, who was unable to continue in the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational due to his participation in The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.

Since I had never heard of them before the clue last night, it was really weird to open the newspaper this morning and see this comic strip:
