CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: I'm a little bit confused about some information regarding Rob Schrader, who is 17 years old. He's a junior from Kentucky, and you were building homes in Guatemala?
Rob: Yes, sir. Uh, it was at--
Alex: Sounds like a church project.
Rob: Yes. It was a mission trip down to Guatemala, and it was actually a, uh, very strenuous project.
Alex: I can imagine.
Rob: Yes, we--I was, for instance, cutting cinder blocks with a dull machete.
Alex: A machete?
Rob: Yes. Yeah, it was--
Alex: One slice at a time?
Rob: Just... [imitates whoosh] Just whack it.
Alex: And it works? A perfect cut every time?
Rob: Uh, not exactly. I had to do it several times. I wasn't quite the pro. [Chuckles]
Alex: Okay. Well, good for you.
Alex: Gabriela Gonzales--a senior from North Carolina, a senior at calvary Baptist who--we have a good story and a bad story here. You saved your sister's life how?
Gabriela: Um, yes. She was choking on a Teletubby window decal, and I reached down her throat to pull it out, and then I was glad--yay!--she was alive!--but then she threw up all over me, and it was awful. It was awful.
Alex: Okay. That's the bad side. [Laughs]
Alex: Evan Eschliman from Olathe, Kansas. You attended a 4-H congress this past summer?
Evan: Uh, this is--this is true. In Atlanta, and it was a lot of fun, so...
Alex: Yeah? And you're a member of 4-H.
Evan: Yes.
Alex: And are you raising, uh, an animal?
Evan: Uh, actually, I don't do any livestock, but I do...
Alex: Oh, you don't? What do you do?
Evan: Just about everything else.
Alex: [Chuckles] Everything else but the livestock.
Evan: Yeah.

PREFINAL REMARKS
(Michelle Obama delivers a footnote after the Jeopardy! round.) We didn't arrive at a moment where nearly 1 in 3 of our kids are overweight and obese overnight. It took 3 decades for obesity rates in the United States to triple. We can't expect to find some quick fix or magic pill that will change us back overnight. It's gonna take all of us--parents and teachers, community leaders, medical professionals, and others, all working together on behalf of our children, and that's why I started Let's Move, a nationwide effort to help our kids lead healthier and more active lives, and that's why I wrote my first book, American Grown, to highlight community solutions to the challenge of childhood obesity, because I know that together, with passion, determination, and hard work, we can solve this challenge and we can give our kids the happy, healthy futures they deserve.
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Two-thirds for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Gabriela: Wager $7,001 to cover Evan.
Evan: You ought to wager to cover Rob, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings by betting all $13,800. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $8,200 (to shut out Rob) or less than $200 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Rob). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Gabriela.
Rob: Considering that you're going to lose on a Triple Stumper by at least $2,600, you need to bet either $2,801, and play for a win if Evan tries to two-thirds Gabriela, or bet at least $9,601 to cover Gabriela's $0 bet (though, from this position, a wager of all $11,000 is acceptable and perhaps preferred).
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
In 1777 an opponent wrote of him "money is this man's god, and to get enough of it he would sacrifice his country"
FINAL SCORES
Rob: $11,000 - $11,000 = $0 (Who was Hamilton?) (3rd place: $5,000 if eliminated)
Evan: $13,800 - $1,200 = $12,600 (Who is Alexander Hamilton?) (Automatic semifinalist)
Gabriela: $20,600 - $8,000 = $12,600 (Who Alexander Hamilton?) (2nd place: $5,000 if eliminated)
[upon the reveal of Gabriela's wager:]
(Alex: That leaves you with $12,600, and what that means is that, for the first time in many, many years, we have a tie in a tournament, and that means we're gonna have to go to a tiebreaker clue, but we are ready for that. The rule is very simple. You have to be the first one to ring in with a correct response. You cannot win by default. Pick up your signaling devices. )
Total Potential Lach Trash: $2,600

It was very sad in many ways. I wanted to yell at my screen.
Can anyone explain the Hamilton triple? I thought this one was easy and I don't get where they went astray.

Only 2/5 in At the Mall, much to my surprise. I've never worn Vans, so that one was out of my league; tripped up on Hollister because I keep forgetting that it's actually "Hollister Co."; and clammed on Panda Express since there aren't any in the malls around here.
0/5 in Team Nicknames. NHO whichever one was an OKC team.
Drew a blank on John the Baptist, keeping me from my first ever 5/5 in a Biblical category.
No guess on FJ! I keep thinking Benedict Arnold was a historical figure from ancient times. His name just sounds like it should be more in place with guys like Julius Caesar.

The wagering...good lord. It's funny, I'm usually annoyed with all the times Alex reminds us of the 4 wild cards available; clearly, he isn't saying it enough, because they aren't listening. Sad. Nice to see a rare tiebreaker question though.

Those I've heard of. But I don't follow sports, so I wasn't aware the SuperSonics had moved.heelsrule1988 wrote:Thunder... used to be the Seattle SuperSonics. You probably haven't heard of them, either.TenPoundHammer wrote:0/5 in Team Nicknames. NHO whichever one was an OKC team.
Seriously, teams seem to change names as often as motels change brands. And it seems just about as pointless to me either way.

I was thinking Cornwallis for some reason
Although, the tiebreaker was...anything QUICKER than an instaget?

Re: Friday, May 4, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Well that was certainly unexpected. Now at least I can say that I've seen a tiebreaker clue in a game I was watching "live". I was completely stunned when it was revealed that Gabriela and Evan were tied, as I had essentially conceded the game to her as soon as Evan's incorrect response was revealed. I was busy noticing that if Evan had responded correctly, his wager would have left him at exactly $15,000. Assuming that Gabriela was the winner, he would have been one agonizing dollar short of claiming the final wild card.
I said it yesterday, and I'll say it again, don't the players understand how the wild cards work? Do people try out for Jeopardy who have never watched the show, or seldom watched it? I suppose that if you've never watched any Jeopardy! tournaments, you would have no reasonable understanding of what the wild card scores tend to be, which I suppose would make wagers like Gabriela's more understandable. Then again, she seemed to understand that she needed to bet enough to cover twice Evan's score. Unfortunately, she chose to cover him by $1,000, instead of just $1, and it proved costly.
I'm sure there's no precedent for this, but if the tied players' scores had been high enough to qualify for a wild card spot, they still would have had the tiebreaker question, right? I assume that they would have, just in order to be able to cite one player as a Quarterfinal winner, and the other as a Wild Card, but there would be no functional difference, right? As far as I know, all players advancing to the Semi-Finals are essentially treated equally, so the tiebreaker winner wouldn't actually gain anything over the tiebreaker loser, as far as I know. Anyone feel free to correct me if any of these assumptions I have made are incorrect.

Fixated on the money aspect since Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury and possibly have a major misunderstanding of the circumstances of his duel with Aaron Burr? That's the best I got.lisa0012 wrote:It was very sad in many ways. I wanted to yell at my screen.
Can anyone explain the Hamilton triple? I thought this one was easy and I don't get where they went astray.
Happy for Evan and inordinately pleased that Johnny and Alex managed to properly pronounce Olathe.

Gabriela's overwager costed her a semifinals spot, and at least $5000. Too bad, because I was actually wishing for her to advance.

What was Gabriela thinking, an 8k wager? she should have just done 1k or so as 19k is pretty much top wild-card. This has to be one of my best Jeopardy games as I'm pretty sure I hand under 10 incorrect.
Oh yeah, Gabriela was a pretty cute girl.

If I am not mistaken, the HIGHEST winner's score allows him to select first in the semi's game. What were the other wild-card scores if you happen to know. thanksjeff6286 wrote:Well that was certainly unexpected. Well, I certainly fell for that negbait as well. Pretty obvious once Alex mentioned it, but nonetheless if you focus on money ...
I'm taking bets on next week's matches if anyone's interested.

OH, let's hope not; let's hope there is some cachet to actually being first lady as opposed to being a prospective nominee's wife. And let's hope the party that has veered off the rails of sanity and is pretending it's 1928 and only the rich are entitled to education or medical care doesn't gain the advantage to put Ann Romney in that position. tipping point...DBear wrote:Can we look for a show with Ann Romney giving the clues this fall?

Was there no one in Gabriela's entourage to discuss wagering strategy with her? Any sage counsel prior to her match should have included the fact that $20 k is an advance. She played well and deserved better.

Are the contestants aware of the previous games winners and second place totals? If so, she made a bad wager, but if not, then can't blame her too much. I wouldn't be surprised if they are not aware because it would be unfair to the contestants who play first.
FJ was instaget as was the tie breaker. I'm very surprised none of them got Benedict Arnold. got all the FJ's this tournament so far although thats not as impressive as the adult games
