No problem with the castle. Visited it in September and twelvefootgirl fell on a winding staircase and lost a day in bed with a racked knee. I think she felt it twinge when the picture came up. But we have two picture postcards are on the fridge door now. It's a neat place, but kind of loses it's street cred when you learn it's a "replica" castle. Might as well be Excalibur in Las Vegas in 50 years.

What do you mean? We were there in August (fortunately no slippages occurred), and never heard anything about it being a replica of anything. Or did you mean you were in Disneyland (where there is a replica)? I'm confused.

It was built in the 1800s on top of the ruins of a castle built around 500 years earlier. I'd say it's a fanfic castle more than replica though (cause the original sure didn't look like that).

There's also a replica in Segovia, Spain - and I'd heard that this was the one Walt had in mind for Cinderella's castle (but that might have been Spain trying to horn in on that action).

But yes, first I've heard anyone claim that the Mad King was just copying something else. Just a suggestion, Twelvefootboy, but you really should try sourcing some of your more exotic claims. Google can be a good friend. (Unless we've completely misunderstood your comment about the replica castle).

I'm sure you know the backstory about Ludwig losing his kingdom and wanting to build a showier castle out of oneupsmanship. And his obsession with the medieval times, etc.. (I don't recall all the specifics, but I imagine Ludwig to have an orange complexion and small hands). So it is not so much a replica of a previous structure, but was never made to defend invaders particularly. It still has a ton of cool factor, and maybe the serfs and peasants hung out to see what the king was eating, but it doesn't have the authenticity of Windsor Castle or even Pembroke Castle imho.

I'm sorry if my curmudgeon comment was confusing. I'm not that picky or whiny, but a sesquicentury old structure is new in Europe. I still highly recommend seeing the castle if you are ever in the area but use the handrails in the turrets!

ETA - I just saw the additional inputs, all are correct. I abused the term "replica", unawares that real replicas exist. We all like authenticity in our moats and boiling oil

McDormand was a coulda, woulda, shoulda headslapper very obvious in retrospect. Wouldn't have gotten Andrew without several days of thought; would have probably been about my 9th guess as I worked through the list.

I remember when I first heard about Diana Nyad a long time ago after one of her endurance swims I thought "kind of an appropriate name." Still hear her voice occasionally commenting on swimming events on TV.

Fargo was the first Coen Brothers film I did not see during its initial theatrical release, and despite its acclaim, it is not one of my favorites - so it just didn’t bubble to the top of my brain. Probably should have gotten Tombstone; the others...naaah.

Bavaria and lunge were instagets, but I haven’t kept up with Neptune’s moons.

Altogether a lousy week.

A pretty good week of FJ clues that required a little thought, with the exception of Thursday that was esoteric enough that it should have been tossed on the reject pile. Still surprised Friday was a TS but at least they came up with something from the right era. But it does go to show that stuff that a lot of us assumed would loom large in American legend forever is going to fade to the point where it's just one other tale somewhat lost among many others. Time has a way of doing that with almost everything ...

I was watching J! rather late at night and couldn't even come up with a viable option on the McDormand clue based on the date. Still, I would have responded correctly had there been even the smallest TOM for Fargo.

The next day I picked up on the TOM date, but I must have been in a funny mood because I WAG'd "New York, New York."

As for Andrew, I know little about Catholic feast days, but I knew that Andrew was the first apostle called by Jesus.

The only way I would have gotten Tuesday is if I were spotted "The answer is McDormand".
Being a couple of heresies removed from Catholicism, I'm not very good at Saints. I could at least eliminate a couple of answers. Not Paul (never one of the 12), not Peter (hey! That's a familiar name!), not Judas. Guessed John, figuring I had a 9 in 10 chance of being wrong.
As I threw out a guess that I was pretty sure was wrong on Friday, I was also pretty sure I'd have a Duh! moment when the correct answer was revealed. I did. I have family that lives near Tombstone, and have visited it a few times - one not that long ago.
