2019 Current Events Study Guide
I don't like these growing too large, plus at some point the old year's list becomes too outdated.
Past lists, as always, are linked at the start and this year they all line up and are secure!

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Daryl Dragon of Captain & Tennille has also died today.

And on an interesting note, Daryl Dragon, Gene Okerlund, and Bob Einstein all died at 76.

Mods, please move this to the 1955 Current Events Study Guide thread.
Seriously, this is a potentially confusing response because Bob Einstein's brother is named Albert Einstein, although he's known professionally as Albert Brooks. (He's also only 71, and alive and well, as of January 2, 2019.)

Nancy Pelosi became the first person since Representative Sam Rayburn of Texas, more than 60 years ago, to reclaim the position of House speaker.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide
Netflix has appealed to people not to engage in the "Bird Box Challenge", in which they perform various physical tasks while blindfolded--just as Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock) and two child characters named "Boy" and "Girl" had to do in the Netflix film Bird Box.
I expect this come up, just as the Ice Bucket Challenge did in 2014-15.

As some outlets have pointed out, Netflix is disclaiming responsibility, not quite telling people to stop...Blue Lion wrote: ↑Fri Jan 04, 2019 9:43 am Netflix has appealed to people not to engage in the "Bird Box Challenge", in which they perform various physical tasks while blindfolded--just as Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock) and two child characters named "Boy" and "Girl" had to do in the Netflix film Bird Box.
I expect this come up, just as the Ice Bucket Challenge did in 2014-15.
From Variety-
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE,” Netflix tweeted from its primary account Wednesday. “We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl” — a reference to two unnamed children of Bullock’s character — “have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
Note that Netflix didn’t try to discourage people from engaging in the #BirdBoxChallenge — only to be careful....
The movie is apparently the most watched in its first week, in the history of Netflix.

There is something there although I don't know which source to cite or works to list. Anyway, works from 1923 are now in the public domain.

Try this article in The New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/29/book ... omain.htmlMarkBarrett wrote: ↑Fri Jan 04, 2019 11:46 am There is something there although I don't know which source to cite or works to list. Anyway, works from 1923 are now in the public domain.
Or this one in Fortune: http://fortune.com/2019/01/02/public-domain-1923/
And this one at lifehacker.com has a pretty good list of well-known works entering the public domain:

I had a clue about one of these works when I was on the show, but I had barely heard of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran at that time, so Jake got it instead.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide
There's some controversy over at least one of the titles on the lifehacker list, Felix Salten's Bambi. A US Circuit Court ruled in the 1990s that though Bambi was published in Germany in '23 its US copyright was first recognized in 1926, so doesn't run out until 2022. The ruling is considered shaky among IP lawyers, but I don't know if anyone's planning to test it by publishing an unauthorized version...

In late 2018 news (didn't feel like bumping the old thread), Burundi has moved its political capital city from the easily-remembered Bujumbura to the less-stickily-named Gitega. Bujumbura remains the economic capital.
