CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Morgan Burns is an accountant from Massachusetts. Morgan Burns, who also happens to be a fan of Robert Burns, am I right?
Morgan: I am, yes.
Alex: To what extent?
Morgan: Every January on Robert Burns' birthday, I host a Robert Burns-themed party. I cook some haggis.
Alex: Oh, gosh.
Morgan: Oh, it's--it's even better than you can imagine.
Alex: You know why the Scots invented Scotch whiskey? It's because they also invented haggis.
Morgan: Yes.
Alex: All right.
Alex: Susan Campbell is a research scientist from Baltimore, Maryland. A collector of...
Susan: Rubber ducks.
Alex: Really?
Susan: I know. It's a little cliché, but I have a large collection of rubber ducks. I keep several in my office. And I brought a William Wallace rubber duck with me today, in fact, that I picked up in Scotland.
Alex: Do you ever take baths with the company of one of your rubber ducks?
Susan: I think that's between me and the ducks.
Alex: Okay.
Alex: Will Dawson is our champion. He's a tour guide from Washington, D.C. And a member of an all-male--what kind of club?
Will: An all-male theater group. It's called the Players' Club in Detroit, Michigan. I have had to play women's roles before. Probably my most famous one was playing Miss Scarlet in our version of Clue.
Alex: Oh, all right.

LITERARY FIRST LINES $2000: From 1931:
"It was Wang Lung's marriage day"
(Susan: What is...)
(Alex: Not coming?)
(Susan: Paper Moon?)
SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Will who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 20th clue. Will had $12,600, Susan had $7,400, and Morgan was at $8,800. Will wagered $2,000.

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Will: $21,800
Morgan: $11,200
Susan: $9,800
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE U.S. SENATE
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Will: Wager $601 to cover Morgan, but no more than $2,199 so as not to fall behind Susan's doubled score.
Morgan: You have the hope of surpassing Will if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $10,601 to force Will to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Susan.
Susan: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A 1890 resolution by Senator Aldrich was killed by this, the very technique it sought to limit; a 1917 rule set some boundaries on it
FINAL SCORES
Susan: $9,800 + $2,000 = $11,800 (What is the filibuster) (3rd place: $1,000)
Morgan: $11,200 + $10,001 = $21,201 (What is filibuster?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Will: $21,800 + $601 = $22,401 (What is the fillibuster) (2-day champion: $55,002)

Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It does not take much to amuse me, such as Morgan getting the Stanley clue.
Last week Will had trouble with the ANAGRAM PAIRS and today he opened FILL “E” with a response that did not begin and end with “E.” I’m afraid to see what happens if a Before & After or Rhyme Time comes up tomorrow.
For the FJ! clue I pulled a Mark special getting it right while being doubly wrong. First I wrote “cloture” and after crossing it out I wrote the correct response with two “L”s.
Nice repeat win by Will who was the strongest in a good match with 45,000 combined Coryat. The potential lock was there for Will although his 2000 only on DD3 ended up leaving Morgan a chance to steal the game.
Even if Susan had solved DD2 she still would have trailed for the FJ! round.
Did the J! round have any kind of theme with the categories?
OUR FAIR CITY
OXFORD
EUGENE
ROAM
FILL "E"
CHICAGO, ATLANTA & MIAMI SOUND MACHINE
It the writers were going for something it's beyond me.

Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I think they were just going for a bunch of city names with the categories; if it was any more than that, it went over my head, too.
Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was completely stumped by this board.
Utterly unfamiliar with "Dome of the Rock", "temblor", Wynken/Blynken/Nod, Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine, edamame, John Huston, or a lot of other top-two-boxes material today.
Also whiffed with Sturgis for Midwest city + Harley-Davidson.
Couldn't find a TOM in Holidays for $400. What part of that clue had anything to do with March?
Really? 98.6 degrees ia a $2,000 clue? I clammed because I thought "range" indicated something wider.
Absolutely lost on FJ! Had no idea what to even guess.

Maybe it's just me, but is Harley being in Milwaukee that well-known?
Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Please let "Our Fair City" be about Car Talk.
"Eugene" would be a valid response for "Fill'e'"
More "Eugene": My hairtrigger response for "Where's Papa going with that axe?" was "Careful with that axe, Eugene."
I'll be very glad if I never have to hear "God Bless America" at a seventh-inning stretch again. Patriotism is a sin against God; we need less of it in public, not more.
Moose bite can be very nasty, too.
Coryat: $42,000
J: 24R5P1W. Got DD. 5/5 on Oxford. 4/5 on Our Fair City (I said Rapid City instead of Milwaukee), Eugene, Roam, and Fill "E." 3/5 on Chicago...
DJ: 25R4P1W. Got both DDs. 5/5 on Numeric and Holidays. 4/5 on Human Body, Roman Army, and Directors. 3/5 on First Lines (Darkness at Noon instead of The Trial. The fact that it said "Josef K" put me to Stalin, but of course in Darkness at Noon the Stalin-allegorical figure is Number One (also "Josef K" doesn't work for Stalin's patronymic, birth surname, or revolutionary surname)).
FJ: Instaget
LT: David Foster, Nine Old Men

Strong game by all three players. Unfortunately, there was no drama at the end, as FJ! was super-WECIB.

The holiday's name contained "Padraig," which is the Irish (Gaelic) form of Patrick. The clue also mentioned Dublin, which could lead you to the holiday we most associate with Ireland/the Irish.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 7:30 pm Couldn't find a TOM in Holidays for $400. I was wondering that myself. I tried to get a job with them while in business school and stopped by the museum when my wife and I caught a game at Miller Park, so I got it, but I'm not sure I'd have known it otherwise.

Re: Monday, February 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Happened to rewatch Seth Wilson's ninth game today where he gave a correct response of "The Good Earth". Not sure I get DD2 without it, today at least.
FJ wording felt a little clunky in my eyes, but got there to make 6 out of the last 7.
Good game from Will; his take home total after day 2 is higher than all 14 regular play champs in the ToC field right now.

I'm with you tonight, but I've admittedly been a bit off the past few games. Does not seem to be too obscure of a fact, however, as I see a couple hits in the Archive.

Indeed. Though I would feel sorry for anyone who might have been relying on Alex's reading of the clue. He needs never to attempt the Irish language ever again. Every word of the three-word phrase was butchered.BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 8:03 pmThe holiday's name contained "Padraig," which is the Irish (Gaelic) form of Patrick. The clue also mentioned Dublin, which could lead you to the holiday we most associate with Ireland/the Irish.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 7:30 pm Couldn't find a TOM in Holidays for $400. What part of that clue had anything to do with March?

Well, it has been in the news recently thanks to 45, and I guess the writers were expecting the jump to the largest city in Wisconsin, there.

I got The Good Earth. Having basically mastered the 2003 J! PC game throughout my life, that's what I can credit for that.
No on FJ though. Didn't even have a guess, really.

I thought it was interesting that a J! round clue mentioned that Eugene O'Neill was the second American Nobel literature laureate, and then the first DD in DJ was about a work by the third one.

Congrats to the champ on a solid second win and almost a lock.
Nice job for the most part by all three, as we almost saw all three enter FJ north of $10K.
LT: the now obsolete 9 old men (answered handily by the 10th old man).
