CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: The first player we introduced on the program today is Ellen Clark. She's from Virginia Beach, Virginia. And for about 10 years, you coached synchronized swimming. Now, I'm curious. Do you have to be in the pool with the people you're coaching, and you move them around, say, "This is what I want you to do"?
Ellen: No, you can't be in the pool because you gotta see what they're doing. But I did have a long stick that I would kind of--
[Alex mimes hitting something with a stick.]
Ellen: Not smack, but just kind of nudge them to get them straight up to vertical if needed, or make adjustments.
Alex: Were you teaching boys or girls?
Ellen: Girls. I did have one boy, but only one in the whole 10 years.
Alex: Okay. Fun?
Ellen: Always fun.
Alex: All right.
Alex: Rob Williams, a renewable energy manager from Portland, Oregon. Who went on a first date with his now-wife, and something unusual happened involving the SWAT team.
Rob: Yeah, that's right. It was actually a blind date as well.
Alex: Oh, gosh.
Rob: So it was quite an evening. But it was a dance that was hosted by our college. Our roommates set us up. We're having a great time, and the lights came up. The SWAT team came in. Come to find out later that it was an overzealous liquor enforcement raid to make sure nobody was drinking. We've been together ever since. I have a beautiful baby daughter.
Alex: You and the SWAT team?
Rob: Yeah, me and the SWAT team. And it's actually my wife's birthday today, so happy birthday, Rachel.
Alex: All right. Good for you.
Alex: All right, Eric Backes is our champion. I'd like to know about the day you proposed to your wife. It wasn't the traditional one knee on the ground and--well, what happened?
Eric: Well, my lovely wife, Bethany--she and I had a whole bunch of our friends over one night. And we were playing video games. And one video game we were playing was called Dance Dance Revolution. It's the one, you know, where you're like this.
[Eric mimes playing Dance Dance Revolution.]
Eric: And while we playing that, that's when I popped the question. She said yes. We've been married for 13 years.
Alex: Who won the game?
Eric: Pretty sure my wife did. I have no rhythm, so...
Alex: Okay. All right.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Eric found the Daily Double on the 27th clue. Eric had $6,000, Rob had $6,000, and Ellen was at $1,800. Eric wagered $3,000.
QUOTED IN THE OED $600: The OED loves this other reference work founded in the U.K., quoting it more than 14,500 times
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Eric: $10,000
Rob: $6,000
Ellen: $2,600

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Rob tried to keep up with Eric though by the time 59 clues were played the lock was set.
The scoreboard was Eric 23700 & Rob 10400 with two clues left.
$800 was a TS.
Eric got the $1200 clue that ended the round. Someone quicker on the scoreboard math would have laid off it as even if Rob went to 11600 it still would have been a runaway.
Like last week my geography coin stinks and I wrote Bahamas. That was quite fast from the J! gods after my comment in the Monday thread just before I watched the game about how it stinks to miss one all three contestants get. Grrr!
Lucario is going to have a perfect J! round since I got 27/29 in it. Everyone has BUGS BUNNY on their study list right?

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Coryat: 37,800
49 R/6 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: annihilate, Captain Blood (DD)
How in the world was there no reversal on "perfect squares"? That was every bit as legitimate a response as "square roots." I think Rob has a rock-solid case for being invited back, particularly since the next clue chosen was DD3.
The Daffy Duck animator clue was also weird. Like Eric, I was confused as to whether they were looking for the name of Bugs's creator (Chuck Jones, presumably) or the much-more-obvious Daffy Duck.

It sounded to me like there was a tape stoppage at that point. My guess is that when Ellen picked the Daily Double, they stopped tape before the reveal to be absolutely certain they were going to rule against Rob before revealing the Daily Double.BigDaddyMatty wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 7:13 pm How in the world was there no reversal on "perfect squares"? Another missed opportunity..."What's up, Doc?" is a question itself.
Coryat: $31,600. Ugh.
J: 26R2P1W. Got DD. 5/5 on Countries and Bugs Bunny. 4/4 on Quoted. 4/5 on Peaceful Guns, Same Day, and Animal Fakers.
DJ: 18R11P1W. Ugh. Missed both DDs. Ugh. 5/5 on Final Jeopardy. 3/5 on Famous "N"ames, Hip to Be Square and Miracle Meds. 2/5 on Top 10 and Adventure Novels
FJ: Instaget.

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
For what it's worth, Google shows that the given pattern is referenced as both "Perfect Square Day" and "Square Root Day" by various sources, and the first I found for "Perfect Square Day" was referring to the upcoming 4/4/16, so it definitely predates taping of this episode. Since Perfect Square/Square Root Day is at any rate an entirely informal observation/commemoration/whatever, it seems arbitrary to accept one informal non-authority but not another. That's not to say you're necessarily wrong about your inference that it won't be fixed, just that it should be.OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 7:39 pmIt sounded to me like there was a tape stoppage at that point. Had FJ on "650 miles off the U.S." Everything else was just noise.

How in the world was there no reversal on "perfect squares"? That was every bit as legitimate a response as "square roots." I think Rob has a rock-solid case for being invited back, particularly since the next clue chosen was DD3.
Instaget FJ.

The Daffy Duck animator clue was also weird. Like Eric, I was confused as to whether they were looking for the name of Bugs's creator (Chuck Jones, presumably) or the much-more-obvious Daffy Duck.
No one's quite sure who actually created Bugs, but his first appearance was directed by Tex Avery ("A Wild Hare" from the $400 clue).
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
In any case, the show has historically not considered "could have picked a Daily Double" as sufficient reason to allow a return in these cases. And we have a case where Rob was defeated in a runaway that had a triple-get final, so, by the show's standards, this is not reason to allow a return.Euphonium wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 8:29 pm For what it's worth, Google shows that the given pattern is referenced as both "Perfect Square Day" and "Square Root Day" by various sources, and the first I found for "Perfect Square Day" was referring to the upcoming 4/4/16, so it definitely predates taping of this episode. Since Perfect Square/Square Root Day is at any rate an entirely informal observation/commemoration/whatever, it seems arbitrary to accept one informal non-authority but not another. That's not to say you're necessarily wrong about your inference that it won't be fixed, just that it should be.

No no no no no. Jeopardy contestants are expressly instructed that if the correct answer to something is "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" the correct response is "What is Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."

Thanks for the word up FG. This is at least the fifth time someone has mentioned the "already a question" status about a response (since 2017 anyway), this is the first time I've (knowingly) heard of the instructions by TPTB. Too bad, but how desperate are we for a mini-scandal?floridagator wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:03 pmNo no no no no. Damn, I had narrowed it to Bahamas/Bermuda after ruling out Hispaniola because of the DR/Haiti complication. We took an Orlando quickie cruise to Bahamas and tried to cipher if it could be 600 knots away if we sailed for 20 hours , or was it 40?. Turns out to be 350 miles. Anyhow, it was within the huge margin of error, so I took the wrong one.
I wasn't nuts about the square root clue due to it's obscurity and negbaitness. It does have me looking forward to 3/3/27 as exponent day (copyright - ME).
Based on the news story linked, I was surprised at Eric's first DD not going all in. I have no idea what you people (patronizing tone inferred) are talking about his "stance". Is this a Seinfeld episode? I hope he wears a puffy shirt tomorrow.
I commented on the audience pan on yesterday's taping that showed the young people (you can tell because they have all their hair and teeth) in the front two rows. No audience footage on my broadcast today. And I don't expect tomorrow either. I hadn't noticed before the effort to keep up their "one a day" illusion. I will continue to monitor this nothingburger.

You may well be right about the show's standard--I trust your knowledge on the subject as much as anyone's--but if so, it's a bad standard. If an erroneous ruling by TPTB cost a player a chance to win the game, that player ought to be invited back. This one clearly did. If not for their error, Rob could have led at the end of DJ!, which would have given him the win on the triple-get FJ!OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 10:48 pmIn any case, the show has historically not considered "could have picked a Daily Double" as sufficient reason to allow a return in these cases. Anyone else think Eric looks like a young Fred Willard?
He's a very good player. That much is certain.

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I don't know that the "next clue picked was a DD" argument really holds much water. It maybe would be stronger if they had played 800-1200-1600 and then the 2000 in the same category was the DD, gives a much more reasonable argument that the player would have found the DD. But Ellen simply went to one of the 12 clues remaining on the board. There's no strong reason to assume Rob would've made the same selection. Say she picked a 400, got it right, and then went to the 2000 with the DD, does this negate your case for Rob being brought back, because it wasn't the very next clue?OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 7:39 pmIt sounded to me like there was a tape stoppage at that point. I would invite him back either way, but I do think the case is much stronger here. He should have had control of the board, with a path to victory. Instead, at the first moment at which he could regain control, he no longer had such a path. TPTB effectively locked him out of the game.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 13, 2019 1:09 amI don't know that the "next clue picked was a DD" argument really holds much water. Regardless of what contestants are told in the briefings (of which you have been present for none), the rule has always been "responses must be phrased in the form of a question," and so TPTB cannot penalize contestants for not nesting an already-in-question-form title or quotation within another question.floridagator wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:03 pmNo no no no no.
