In re the A380, most jets are below 300,000 gross takeoff weight. The B747, DC-10 etc were over that which made them “heavy.” The A380 weighed so much that it was referred to as “super” and ATC had to provide extra spacing behind it. You would NOT want to be in a C210 behind DLH25 Super! I’ve flown in the Dreamliner & I was in the main cabin on the way from Sydney to Bali. It was a really nice ride. On the return I was in a crappy A321. Yuck!

Interestingly, though both variants of the 757 fall below the 300,000 lbs. MTOW threshold, they are also treated as heavies for takeoff spacing. Admittedly, the 757 (particularly 752) is ridiculously overpowered, but still it's questionable how reliable the test data that was the basis for that requirement is.

(side note: got to take a 757 out of Santa Ana once; between the overpowered engines and the noise abatement procedures, it's the coolest thing ever)

If he's referring to John Wayne, I'd guess it would be due to the shortness of the runways there. A 757 would have to take off much quicker than it normally would (usually needs about 1.25 miles and the runway is barely 1 mile long), so the plane would have to be underweight and hoofing it.

Not only that, but a couple thousand feet up, they have to throttle back because people don't want to -hear- the airport. So pilots have to go full out, coast, then go full out again. (It's more nuanced than that, but I'm not too motivated to find detailed steps)

Moving on...

If this doesn't show up in a weird news category, I'll be very disappointed.

A Canadian vodka distiller has lost 30,000 litres of valuable iceberg water in what appears to be a heist.

Iceberg Vodka CEO David Meyers says he is mystified as to who - or why - someone would have stolen the water.

France's fencing federation has declared light saber dueling an official sport.

http://www.espn.com/olympics/fencing/st ... ling-sport
Like virtuous Jedi knights, the French federation sees itself as combatting a dark side: the sedentary habits of 21st-century life that are sickening ever-growing numbers of adults and kids.
Sadly, though, they don't expect it to become an Olympic event by the 2024 Paris Olympics.

To be clearer, Indiana Dunes already existed as a National Lakeshore, but it was recently upgraded to National Park status.

Ariana Grande becomes the first artist to occupy all top three spots on Billboard's Hot 100 since The Beatles did it in 1964. Grande's singles are "7 Rings," "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," and "Thank U, Next." The Beatles achieved the feat in April 1964, with their records "Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout," and "Do You Want to Know a Secret?"
