Alex: Doug Wilham is from Louisville, Kentucky, and he is a well-traveled man except when we're talking about the United States, because until you came to compete on this program, you had not been west of the Mississippi?

Doug: Yes, that's correct. But I have been to Africa, and so that's kinda weird. We had been on a mission trip to Africa in 2001, before September 11, thankfully. And got an opportunity to go experience that, but had not really been traveling any further west than Memphis itself.

Alex: There are a lot of good things out here in the west, you know.

Doug: That's what I hear. Yes, sir.

Alex: Okay.




Alex: Rachel Fabi from Syracuse, New York. A professor of bioethics and health policy?

Rachel: That's right.

Alex: Which means you do what? What do you specialize in?

Rachel: So bioethics is the ethics of health and science, and I specialize in the ethics of health policy specifically.

Alex: Good for you. All right.




Alex: Amanda Holm is our champion. She is from Livonia, Michigan. She's a project manager and a war bride?

Amanda: Yeah. When my husband, George, and I had only been dating for a few months, he was called up from the Army reserve to go to Iraq for most of 2009. And so even though it was a little early as things go, we kinda decided to take the plunge and got married about a month before he shipped out.

Alex: Well, let him know that we thank him for his service.

Alex would have won this game no matter how bad he would be at the buzzer. Trash like the 1898 ship and the ancient war coupled with a sole solve on the FJ! clue would be victory.

Doug played DD2 and DD3 in boxes worth $3200 and bet $2800 total. I think I hear an Ariana Grande song title.

That FJ! clue went 0/3? Wow, sometimes you never know how a clue will play on the show and I'm sure the writers did not expect a skunk on it. Off the category I told myself not to go astray to the standard Irish guys that J! likes. I made sure I had the Austen titles ready and brainstormed the usual list of authors that are used over and over again.

Instead no prep work was needed as the clue with its time frame, I thought, though was wrong, led directly to one guy.

Rachel gets to play again as she recognized a wagering scenario to stay pat. One more game of regular play this week. Alex's opening words had me worried since I knew this game taped after the All-Stars and I did not trust him not to say something spoilerish with it so fresh on his mind.

Asimov, a Russian? Verne, a Frenchman? Clarke was probably the best guess of the bunch but the date disqualifies him.
I'm sorry, but I am absolutely, as the Brits would say, gobsmacked that this is a TS. I would have thought it a triget.

I still say William James's most important work is The Varieties of Religious Experience. It's kind of an outdated artifact of uncritical modernism nowadays, but it did so much to turn the academic study of religion on to the centrality of subjective experience rather than of institutions and theologies.

Not really the best description of macroeconomics, but OK.

I'm imagining the writers' table debate over whether or not to include KY Jelly alongside oil and grease

I'll be checking the box saying I knew the Latin phrase for a writer's or artist's greatest work. I'll also be checking the box saying I have owned (and still own) at least one edition of a Norton Anthology.

So FJ asks for a British SciFi author born in 1866. Rachel gets the ball rolling by guessing a writer from the wrong century with the wrong nationality (both by birth and naturalization). Doug improves the situation by guessing a writer from the right century (if a little early) but a different wrong nationality. Amanda finishes it off with a writer from the wrong century (he got an academy award nomination for the 2001 script fer cryin' out loud) but the right nationality. On the plus side, all three named science fiction authors.

Result? Game goes to the contestant with the worst guess but the best wager. Learn to wager, folks! The bacon you save may be your own. (Offer void for boardies who have already appeared on the show.) Amanda didn't recognize that her unusual situation called for her to make the shutout-to-tie bet against Doug. Had she done so, we'd have seen our second regular-game tiebreaker clue. I hate tiebreaker clues, so I'm kind of glad that didn't happen. Except I kind of want it to happen often enough that the showrunners realize how miserably the tiebreaker plays as drama. Then maybe they'll get rid of that stupid rule and go back to the way things used to be.

Of all categories, I ran "Depression Era Dining".

"Observation" was my only miss in "Brain".

I probably could've gotten this in 5 minutes, but it just wasn't coming. I tried to pull ANY sci-fi authors, British or otherwise, and just had a total blank. Not even the negs got me any closer. It was gettable for me since I recognize H. G. Wells as fitting the criteria, but I just couldn't get the gears going.

But OQ only asked for the 1st = 2nd + half of 3rd scenarios up to season 20. Are we sure it hasn't happened in the last 15 years (minus a month)?

I witnessed live in studio such a scenario in 2009. First and second place both missed, but third place didn't bet $0. And she was lucky she didn't, because second place did!
