Game Recap for Show #7931, 2019-02-18

CONTESTANTS
Doug Wilham, a high school athletic director from Louisville, Kentucky
Rachel Fabi, a professor of public health and bioethics from Syracuse, New York
Amanda Holm, a project manager from Livonia, Michigan (whose 1-day cash winnings total $13,200)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Happy Presidents' Day, everybody. A lot of excitement here on the Jeopardy! stage because of our upcoming All-Star games just two days away from now. Eighteen former Jeopardy! champions coming back to play for a $1 million prize. And they're going to be competing as teammates. And there's a lot of excitement among our viewers as well because of the fantasy teams you have selected. Something to look forward to. But before that, we've gotta deal with today. Amanda's our returning champion. Rachel and Doug are the challengers. I'll wish you good luck and put you to work now in the Jeopardy! Round. And here are the categories for you. Starting off with...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Doug Wilham is from Louisville, Kentucky, and he is a well-traveled man except when we're talking about the United States, because until you came to compete on this program, you had not been west of the Mississippi?

Doug: Yes, that's correct. But I have been to Africa, and so that's kinda weird. We had been on a mission trip to Africa in 2001, before September 11, thankfully. And got an opportunity to go experience that, but had not really been traveling any further west than Memphis itself.

Alex: There are a lot of good things out here in the west, you know.

Doug: That's what I hear. Yes, sir.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Rachel Fabi from Syracuse, New York. A professor of bioethics and health policy?

Rachel: That's right.

Alex: Which means you do what? What do you specialize in?

Rachel: So bioethics is the ethics of health and science, and I specialize in the ethics of health policy specifically.

Alex: Good for you. All right.

Alex: Amanda Holm is our champion. She is from Livonia, Michigan. She's a project manager and a war bride?

Amanda: Yeah. When my husband, George, and I had only been dating for a few months, he was called up from the Army reserve to go to Iraq for most of 2009. And so even though it was a little early as things go, we kinda decided to take the plunge and got married about a month before he shipped out.

Alex: Well, let him know that we thank him for his service.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Rachel found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Amanda had $4,200, Rachel had $4,000, and Doug was at $1,200. Rachel wagered $2,000.

THE BILL OF RIGHTS $800: Key phrases in this amendment: "Witness against himself" & "twice put in jeopardy"

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
SAVING THE ANIMALS $400: For the littlest ones, Best Friends Animal Society provides this type of care, defined as "for newborns"

SAVING THE ANIMALS $600: Be Kind to Animals Week, celebrated in early May, was initiated in 1915 by the American this Organization (not the Society)

THE BILL OF RIGHTS $1000: Think fast! Amendment 6 promises the accused both a public trial as well as one that is this adjective

LANGUAGES $600: Spoken in the country next door, it's basically Dutch with softer sounds

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Amanda: $6,600
Rachel: $6,400
Doug: $800

TEXTBOOKS $1200: A classic of foreign policy, "Diplomacy" by this former Secretary of State includes the story of the reopening of China

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Doug who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 25th clue. Amanda had $11,400, Rachel had $8,000, and Doug was at $6,400. Doug wagered $1,600.

ANTEBELLUM $2000: The 1454 Battle of Stamford Bridge between Nevilles & Percys presaged this larger war of 1455 featuring other families

TEXTBOOKS $800: This anthology of English lit is now in its 10th edition, supervised by Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt

STILL I RISE $1600: At the end of the Stravinsky ballet "Orpheus", this musical instrument rises from the hero's grave up to the heavens

STILL I RISE $2000: (Sarah of the Clue Crew presents from the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, Pennsylvania.) The American Helicopter Museum is a treasure house of these craft, another name for helicopters from the propeller-like part that turns to give them lift
(Amanda: What are choppers?)

ALL TELS $1600: Tel Al-Hawa is a neighborhood in this area on the Mediterranean controlled by Hamas
(Rachel: What is the West Bank?)

ALL TELS $2000: The refugee camp of Tel El-Zaatar was the scene of a 1976 massacre early in this Mideast country's civil war

(Alex: People keep saying, "Remember [*]." We obviously forgot it.)

(Doug: What are the Peloponnesian Wars?)

NAME THE VENUE $1600: Frank Sinatra's Las Vegas debut--this "Inn", 1951

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Amanda: $13,400
Doug: $9,200
Rachel: $8,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
BRITISH AUTHORS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
First equals second plus half of third. Stratton's Dilemma.
Amanda: Wager $5,000--wagering any more risks falling behind Rachel's wager of $0.
Doug: Risk all $9,200 for the win or tie if you give the correct response (and provided Amanda doesn't wager to cover by $1). You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $7,600 (to shut out Rachel) or less than $800 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Rachel). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Amanda.
Rachel: Anticipating that Amanda will wager for the tie rather than to cover by $1, and that Doug will wager everything, you should bet nothing, and you will tie for the win on the Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Born in 1866, he has been called "the Shakespeare of science fiction"

FINAL SCORES
Rachel: $8,400 - $0 = $8,400 (Who is Asimov?) (New champion: $8,400)
Doug: $9,200 - $7,601 = $1,599 (Who is Verne) (3rd place: $1,000)
Amanda: $13,400 - $5,001 = $8,399 (Who is Clarke?) (2nd place: $2,000)

Alex would have won this game no matter how bad he would be at the buzzer. Trash like the 1898 ship and the ancient war coupled with a sole solve on the FJ! clue would be victory.

Doug played DD2 and DD3 in boxes worth $3200 and bet $2800 total. I think I hear an Ariana Grande song title.

That FJ! clue went 0/3? Wow, sometimes you never know how a clue will play on the show and I'm sure the writers did not expect a skunk on it. Off the category I told myself not to go astray to the standard Irish guys that J! likes. I made sure I had the Austen titles ready and brainstormed the usual list of authors that are used over and over again.

Instead no prep work was needed as the clue with its time frame, I thought, though was wrong, led directly to one guy.

Rachel gets to play again as she recognized a wagering scenario to stay pat. One more game of regular play this week. Alex's opening words had me worried since I knew this game taped after the All-Stars and I did not trust him not to say something spoilerish with it so fresh on his mind.

question for cheezguyty:

do you have a list of regular play games from Season 20 and earlier that fits the 1st = 2nd + half of 3rd betting scenario?

The birthdate was a bit earlier than I thought, but who else could it be? Maybe he has fallen off the radar screen for a lot of people. Very surprised this was a TS.

How in this universe is this a TS? These are J-class players, right? British, sci-fi, 1866, WECIB.
Asimov, a Russian? Verne, a Frenchman? Clarke was probably the best guess of the bunch but the date disqualifies him.
I'm sorry, but I am absolutely, as the Brits would say, gobsmacked that this is a TS. I would have thought it a triget.

Dandelion salads are actually pretty tasty, I think

Aww...

I still say William James's most important work is The Varieties of Religious Experience. It's kind of an outdated artifact of uncritical modernism nowadays, but it did so much to turn the academic study of religion on to the centrality of subjective experience rather than of institutions and theologies.

Not really the best description of macroeconomics, but OK.

I'm imagining the writers' table debate over whether or not to include KY Jelly alongside oil and grease

Coryat: $49,400

J: 25R3P1W. Got DD. 5/5 in Bill of Rights and Dining. 4/4 in Languages. 4/5 in Tell Alls and Animals. 3/5 in Vocabulary.

DJ: Perfect.

FJ: Instaget. Absolutely shocked this one was a TS.

LT: Humane, speedy, Flemish, Norton Anthology (got very familiar with that in undergrad), lyre, rotorcraft, Gaza, Lebanon, USS Maine, Punic Wars, Desert Inn

I'll be checking the box saying I knew the Latin phrase for a writer's or artist's greatest work. I'll also be checking the box saying I have owned (and still own) at least one edition of a Norton Anthology.

So FJ asks for a British SciFi author born in 1866. Rachel gets the ball rolling by guessing a writer from the wrong century with the wrong nationality (both by birth and naturalization). Doug improves the situation by guessing a writer from the right century (if a little early) but a different wrong nationality. Amanda finishes it off with a writer from the wrong century (he got an academy award nomination for the 2001 script fer cryin' out loud) but the right nationality. On the plus side, all three named science fiction authors.

Result? Game goes to the contestant with the worst guess but the best wager. Learn to wager, folks! The bacon you save may be your own. (Offer void for boardies who have already appeared on the show.) Amanda didn't recognize that her unusual situation called for her to make the shutout-to-tie bet against Doug. Had she done so, we'd have seen our second regular-game tiebreaker clue. I hate tiebreaker clues, so I'm kind of glad that didn't happen. Except I kind of want it to happen often enough that the showrunners realize how miserably the tiebreaker plays as drama. Then maybe they'll get rid of that stupid rule and go back to the way things used to be.

Too bad nobody guessed Philip K. Dick, since he's also been called "the Shakespeare of science fiction."

Sure, the category (not to mention the date) would have invalidated the response, but it might have otherwise demonstrated critical acumen....

But in the first example (Game #9), second place wouldn't bet it all, but bet the maximum that would still lock out third place.

Runcible was a NHOI. And a google search turns up only a nonsense word by Edward Lear and some kind of timepiece. I found absolutely no reference to it being a type of spoon. Can someone prove this?

Also NHO "chintzy" for a 3/5.

What was the TOM for Africa or Puerto Rico in the top box?

Of all categories, I ran "Depression Era Dining".

"Observation" was my only miss in "Brain".

I probably could've gotten this in 5 minutes, but it just wasn't coming. I tried to pull ANY sci-fi authors, British or otherwise, and just had a total blank. Not even the negs got me any closer. It was gettable for me since I recognize H. G. Wells as fitting the criteria, but I just couldn't get the gears going.

But OQ only asked for the 1st = 2nd + half of 3rd scenarios up to season 20. Are we sure it hasn't happened in the last 15 years (minus a month)?

I witnessed live in studio such a scenario in 2009. First and second place both missed, but third place didn't bet $0. And she was lucky she didn't, because second place did!

I know this isn't the place for snark, but did that one contestant say (and I'm paraphrasing), "Yes, I haven't been west of the Mississippi but I have been to Africa. This was in 2001, pre-9/11 *luckily*" Is there something I'm missing about going to Africa pre versus post 9/11?

ETA: OK now I see the transcript of the interview above. It's even weirder than I imagine. Guy must have been nervous.
Doug: Yes, that's correct. But I have been to Africa, and so that's kinda weird. We had been on a mission trip to Africa in 2001, before September 11, thankfully. And got an opportunity to go experience that, but had not really been traveling any further west than Memphis
