Today's Fantasy Points:
Alex: 12 (Final total 49)
Alan: 11
Leonard: 9 (Final total 26)
Roger: 8 (Final total 26)
Pam: 5
Jennifer: 5 (Final total 13)
Colby: 0
Buzzy: 0 (Final total 19)
Austin: 0 (Final total 34)

The players were 1/6 on big clues. Ouch. Colby was the closest on the FJ! clue so a little justice that his team moves on.

DD3 for 15600-15600 against 4800 & 4900 at the time did not work out for Alex. Cue up the gif for great vengeance and furious anger.

Today felt like I was in the Twilight Zone as I was 4/4 with no doubt in the bunch on the big clues.

Roger & Alex getting bounced was a double play of tough outs dismissed.

Two games to go. Should be something else next week. Can't wait.

Not that it proves anything, I was curious how debut years broke down for finals vs. eliminated: (for same year I did alphabetical and it does not necessarily mean who played first in that calendar year)

Pam: 2000
Ken: 2004
David: 2005
Larissa: 2008
Colby: 2012
Monica: 2012
Matt: 2015
Alan: 2017

Austin: 2017
Buzzy: 2016
Seth: 2016
Alex: 2015
Jennifer: 2015
Julia: 2014
Ben: 2013

Code: Select all

Team Buzzy: 0 3600 3600 7200
Team Colby: 7600 7600 15200 22800
Team Austin: 5200 8900 14100 23000
Team Austin: Bet $8,701 to cover Team Colby.
Team Colby: You have a superlock over Team Buzzy, and Team Austin will fall behind your day 1 score if they cover you and miss. Bet what you want.
Team Buzzy: You can't win, but you can at least beat Team Austin (which is of purely nominal value) if they cover and miss, by betting $1,800 or more.

Ouch on that second DD in the second round. I knew that one cold (I have listened to that soundtrack more times than I can count) but I can see it being impenetrable if you weren't familiar.

Obviously Colby knew the right person in FJ but picked his second term (when he ran for re-election) rather than his first (when the clue would have applied). For the record, Taylor, Grant, Hoover, Eisenhower, and our current president all fit the criteria.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

I had no idea, but I still am not sure why he didn't bet just $5 on that one.

FJ took me about 20 seconds to work backwards, but I did get it. Almost went with '56, but he had been elected in '52 to get there in the first place, so ... :)

WOW. Not how I thought this match would turn out all. Would've been the perfect time for Alex to bet small, but it's just not how he's wired. Then Buzzy missed FJ anyway, so who knows how the math would've worked out.

FJ was such a cinch that I feel like I've fallen into an alternate dimension. Obama no (senator), W no (governor), Clinton no (governor), HW (VP etc), Reagan (gov), Carter (gov), Ford (never won), Nixon (VP etc), LBJ (VP etc), JFK (senator etc), Eisenhower -> 1952 (and not 1956, when the elected incumbent won), done. Never would've predicted a TS.

I admit, I didn't think much of team Colby's chances going in, but into the finals they go. I'll stick with my prediction of team Brad winning it all.

There's a Brown University?! I just always find "who graduated from what college" such a pointless subset of trivia. It has literally zero bearing on anything.

Should I ask for a way to keep Maya/Inca/Aztec straight, or should I just give up on that since I can't even remember which out of eight planets is largest?

Scott number + things collected? That could be literally anything.

No guess on FJ! I could've taken 100 guesses and still gotten this one wrong.

If there is a -tl in the name, the language is Nahuatl(a good example here). Namely Mexicans(Central)
If there is a -tz,ik, a random X then it is Mayan. Central American/other Mexicans

Incans were in South America. They used Quechua, so words would be vicuna, llama, quinoa/kinwa, pampa, etc.
words tend to end in a vowel like "Spanish words"

Leonard goes to Brown University; I think he mentioned that for the introduction game.

Jennifer Morrow would appreciate the Distant Early Warning clue.

FJ was a matter of working backwards and hoping it wasn't so far back that I ran out of time. Got it in the nick of time. Probably could have gotten it a bit quicker, but with slightly less reliability, if I had used the heuristic that Presidents tend to be ex-governors, Senators, or generals, so who's the most recent general?

You can metagame it a bit. It's $400, so it can't be anything too obscure; of things that are commonly collected, coins and stamps have to be pretty high up the list, so they're far and away the two most likely alternatives, and that gets you to a coin flip. Coin-flip on a low-dollar clue in a low-leverage situation (after both DDs have been revealed, and not enough to make a difference in FJ) = pick one and go for it.

Electoral history Finals can sometimes be deceptively tricky in a 30 second timespan, but I'm still mad at myself for missing this one. Went backwards roughly 20 presidents and somehow skipped over Eisenhower completely. Wrote 1828 (Jackson) just to have something.

What a tremendous game. Congrats to Team Colby for fighting back from near doom to finalists. Go Team Ken next week!

I made this mistake as well. I had it pinned to Eisenhower, wrote down 1952, then realized "wait, he won in '56 also," so I changed my answer, completely forgetting that his first four years counted towards the clue.

On the bright side, my Coryat today was the strongest of the tournament. These felt like easy boards, IMO.

Tough break for Alex and Team Buzzy as well as Team Austin, but I'm kind of glad to see Team Colby advance. Colby and Pam each missed a shot against Ken and Brad in the BOTD by losing to Roger, but now they both get a shot at those two in part by beating Roger.

This should be a very good finals, but I'll be rooting for Team Colby. I'm always someone who roots for the underdog.
