Very awful news, but it's reassuring to see that he's handling it with courage and humour. Here's to hoping that he can beat it.

What awful news. Here's hoping that he will be in the percentage that beats this thing.

This is a stunning development. Pancreatic cancer is among the worst types because one often isn't even aware they have it until the disease is well into its latter stages. My late brother-in-law succumbed to pancreatic cancer within 35 days of diagnosis. I hope Alex has a better outcome and can, indeed, beat this. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

This is very sad. I hope very badly that he makes good on his vow to finish out his contract. He’s had a remarkable run, and I hope it continues.

Oh, God.

Pancreatic is awful. Stage 4 cancer is awful. The combination... God. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. If anyone has the resources to bar no holds... but I've seen it before, and in someone younger and with the time/money to go full throttle, and he still lost. This is like a punch to the gut.

Some lovely tributes and good wishes around TV this evening. The most touching I've seen are from Anderson Cooper on AC360 and Chris Cuomo on Cuomo Prime Time. The Cuomo clip here:

The Cooper one could be seen, if your TV service has CNN, on cnngo at around the 8:57 EST timestamp.

This was incredibly hard to hear and it was beyond tough to watch him on tonight's show :(

I was just able to watch the video for the first time. Amazing he could be that straightforward about it on the national stage, but I am glad he beat the media to the punch.

Do you know what air date they are currently taped through?

Wow, I'm surprised by the news. He's always struck me as being in decent health for his age. All the best.

Sad news. Best wishes to Mr. Trebek and I hope he can beat the prognosis and finish his contract! It was an honor to meet him.

Devastating news.

I was convinced that Alex would troll us about his “retirement” for the next 15 years or so as he kept signing contract extensions.

I think the producers should consider moving the final taping sessions for this season to a larger venue. Thousands of true fans will want to give Alex the appreciation that he deserves, and their small studio will not accommodate that.
