CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Scott Semproni is an engineer from Oregon who, on a recent trip to New Zealand, learned to do what?

Scott: I actually learned how to ride a bike for the first time.

Alex: Did it have training wheels?

Scott: It didn't have training wheels, but where we rode had a lot of cow patties, so I have to avoid those.

Alex: Why did you take so learn to learn a bike?

Scott: I would think that for most of us, it's something at the age of 3, 4, or 5--I stuck my foot in the spokes when I was a 5-year-old...

Alex: Oh.

Scott: ...and I was scared after that.

Alex: That turned you off.

Scott: Yeah.

Alex: All right.

Alex: Elaine Wilson, layout artist from Manassas, Virginia.

Elaine: Now.

Alex: But a New Jersey girl...

Elaine: Absolutely.

Alex: ...who is very happy to have the same birthday as...

Elaine: As the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. September 23rd.

Alex: All right. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?

Elaine: Yeah.

Alex: Okay.

Elaine: Made me a lifelong fan when I discovered that piece of trivia.

Alex: All righty.

Alex: Conor Murphy is a graduate student. He's our champion, ladies and gentlemen, and is, or was, a collegiate rower. Not only a collegiate rower but a member of a championship team?

Conor: That's right. My freshman year I rowed at Notre Dame, and we went down to Lake Lanier in Georgia, which is actually where the 1996 Atlanta Olympic rowing trials were held. And I was lucky enough for my boat to win, so now I can add "Jeopardy!" champion to that, I guess, as well.

Alex: All right. Two for two so far.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Conor found the Daily Double on the 23rd clue. Conor had $1,800, Elaine had $3,400, and Scott was at $5,000. Conor wagered $1,200.

NONFICTION $800: A book about this body is subtitled "The Rise & Fall of America's Favorite Planet"
(Conor: What is Mars?)
(Alex: Oh, no. What is [*]? Which is no longer considered to be a planet.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MOVIE PICTURES $400: 2018 film with Keaton, Fonda, Bergen, and Steenburgen
(Alex: And that would be [*].)

FOOD & DRINK $800: This company's iconic deviled ham logo is the USA's oldest food trademark still in use
(Scott: What is Smithfield?)

NONFICTION $600: The actual 1948 kidnapping of 11-year-old Sally Horner is the subject of "the real" this fictional girl
(Alex: Real [*].)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Scott: $5,400
Elaine: $5,400
Conor: $1,600

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
PLAYWRIGHTS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths[/url] for first place.
Scott: Wager $9,001 to cover Elaine.
Elaine: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Conor, hoping that you give the correct response and Scott doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $7,001 to cover Conor's doubled score, but no more than $7,800 if you want to top Scott on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $1,599 and win if both Scott and Conor miss Final.
Conor: You ought to try wagering between $1,601 and $5,400. This will top a $0 wager by Elaine while still beating Scott and Elaine on the Triple Stumper (should Scott wager to cover Elaine's doubled score and Elaine wager to cover your doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Before his death in 2018 at age 91, he received 4 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize & was nominated for 4 Oscars

FINAL SCORES
Conor: $8,600 - $5,400 = $3,200 (Who is Eugene O'Neill?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Elaine: $10,200 + $4,900 = $15,100 (Who was Neil Simon?) (New champion: $15,100)
Scott: $11,400 - $10,000 = $1,400 (Who is Arthur Miller) (3rd place: $1,000)

i haven't posted here for a while.
elaine wilson was one of the gang of "triviots" at aol's "trivia forum" in the '90s and '00s. other members included the late paul legere (whom some of you might remember as "Paucle"), this writer, and seven or eight others who have appeared on the show over the years.
the very first time elaine and i met (at a "bash" in south jersey in '93 or '94), we recited - in unison - the *entire* lyrics of arlo guthrie's "alice's restaurant."
i've told her about this site.

Nice to get all 61 clues in with Norman Lear reading all of the clues in his category. The $2000 in Lear for identifying those famous guys? Crazy clue valuation.

There is leeway on French pronunciation responses, so the attempted rebound of making the painting place sound a little better was money wasted.

I’ll be the one to admit a few times a year I will have sandwiches with the deviled ham logo although I like the chicken spread instead. Scott guessing Smithfield made me laugh.

For IronNeck: You can bet I remembered and did not forget: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4492&p=282007&hilit ... ub#p281876

The FJ! clue had a lot of extra words as “death” & “2018” was enough to get my pen moving correctly.

Sole solve for Elaine on her only big clue while Conor was 1/3 and Scott was 0/2.

Ran "LL" Animals.

3/5 in food. NHO Underwood ham (I don't like ham) and couldn't match hushpuppies to catfish, but I was able to translate "old clothes" properly.

NHO "Kiss of the Spider Woman", so I was 4/5 there.

Had no idea what member of a family would be "quick with a treat". My grandmothers certainly weren't. They were just cranky old curmudgeons who complained about everything I did.

My best get of the day was "El Greco".

All but "myrrh" in Y.

I thought for sure we'd get dragged down by the Norman Lear category, but not even so much as an LTaM.

No guess on FJ! If you had given me the name "Neil Simon" I could've identified him as a playwright. But going the other way? The name is just too generic to pull up. Reverse Hawley Smoot is true.

Tied for first at that point in the game, I would have bet it all on that category

They say it’s always better to write something for Final, but I wonder about that ;)

I kept yelling at Conor to stay clam, but he wouldn’t listen!

Like Alex, I kinda miss the intensity of the All-Stars Tournament :|

Give me a break. Playwright died in 2018 at age 91? All those awards?

Eugene O'Neill WTF??? He died in 1953.

Arthur Miller HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD???

It pays to read the obituaries.

I had a feeling they would make sure Norman Lear got all his screen time in.

The almost-as-recent death of Sam Shepard proved too distracting for me. I'm glad Elaine got it right, although it would have been interesting to see her win because of her underwager that didn't cover Conor's maximum. I can't figure out what she was going for; my best guess is that she tried to anticipate the wager Conor made and cover that by $100, but went $1,000 over somewhere in her calculations.

I missed with Sam Shepard.

How do people here prefer to acquire their knowledge about plays and playwrights? Do you watch plays in a theater, watch a recording, read the play, or something else? I tried to watch some recordings but the quality wasn't great. Any suggestions for enjoyable ways to study plays?

Strange game dynamic, but Conor couldn't get out of his own way. I think Elaine might ring up a couple of games if she can master the buzzer.

Miss on FJ - I thought I remembered some that some obscure playwright died last year that I NHO, so I didn't even try for final, and didn't think I knew any modern playwright (couldn't pull Andrew Lloyd Weber, then gave up). I can defend the Arthur Miller / other stupid answer - that's all I would have had.

I first heard of Neil Simon because of "The Goodbye Girl". I had never heard of a Romantic Comedy until then, and then they became romcoms. I thought I might enjoy the genre, but nope, they are all the same movie. Yeah, so are the James Bond and Avenger movies, but they have a lot less tear jerking and more explosions. But, I'm sick of explosions too...

Alex pretty much suckered Conor into the rebound with his hesitancy at the neg. But the exact same answer in an redneck accent doesn't work either ;).
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

Go see theatre as much as you can, but also read plays and watch the many great film adaptations of classic plays. For Jeopardy prep, you can start with plot summaries of major plays and the Tony, Pulitzer and Nobel winners. Also keep current with what’s on Broadway by reading The NY Times Theatre section or equivalent

Was it just me or was this an unusually easy set of boards? I got 45-0 of the 60 clues (quite high for me) plus a Coryat over $40K, plus instaget FJ.

LT: Underwood (deviled ham), Luther Burbank, lymph, Count of Monte Cristo, Maude (really? Maude, a TS? Has that much time passed?)

Once again Conor had a perfect FJ wager, although his only chance to win was the TS and he didn't quite get it.

I for one am glad to be back to regular-season games.

I also missed with Sam Shepherd. I'm not sure I knew that Neil Simon had died.

I said "Heart of Darkness" instead of "Apocalypse Now." (Which I always call "Alpaca Lips Now" because it's funnier.)

Not only that, but Elaine wagered less than he anticipated, making a sole get his only actual chance.
