ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting that the Los Angeles Angels and Mike Trout are finalizing a contract extension worth $430 million over 12 years. This deal would become the richest in American pro sports history.

Karen Uhlenbeck from the University of Texas at Austin has been awarded the 2019 Abel Prize—regarded as one of the highest accolades in mathematics. She is now the first woman to receive the illustrious award.

“Her theories have revolutionized our understanding of minimal surfaces, such as those formed by soap bubbles, and more general minimization problems in higher dimensions,”
"Soap bubble" will probably be the Pavlov here.

I wanted to say something along the lines of, “...until Mike Trout is up for a new contract,” at the end of that post. The Angels must not have wanted to wait that long.

Retired racing pigeon sells for over $1 million. Best to just read the whole thing in full, I feel bad quoting the whole article but it's just all pure gold.
Auction house Pipa called Armando the "best Belgian long-distance pigeon of all time". He's also been dubbed the "Lewis Hamilton of pigeons".
...
Mr Gyselbrecht said that two buyers from China ended up in a bidding war, escalating from €532,000 up to €1.25m in just over an hour.

It would be nice to have all those recent country and capital name changes in one place. I'm losing track of them (though admittedly most of them don't come into the Jeopardy canon).

Million Dollar Mile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Dollar_Mile will be hosted by Tim Tebow.

Just in case there are any fans of Steve Austin's Broken Skull Challenge, one of the defenders will be Hunter McIntyre, "The Sheriff."

Most of them don't come into the J! canon, but one of them recently came into the LL canon. :)

New album: Karen O and Danger Mouse, LUX PRIMA

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... ma-811285/

Karen O (lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) has been a triple stumper before, and Danger Mouse is one of the better known producers in music. I could see it coming up somehow.

Danger Mouse’s first albums with his two previous collaborations – Gnarls Barkley with CeeLo Green, and Broken Bells with the Shins’ James Mercer – were both nominated in the Best Alternative Album category at the Grammys (in the former’s case, it won). This is a good one to file away for when the 2020 nominees are announced.

As presidential hopefuls are coming out of the woodwork in hopes of landing the 2020 Democratic nomination, the folks over at FiveThirtyEight have put together an interesting piece on the home states of Republican and Democratic presidential candidates throughout history. Some of the more interesting findings include:
  • New York has been home to more major-party presidential candidates (25) than any other state. Second-place Illinois produced 9 candidates, while Ohio was home to 8.
  • Of the eight currently most populous states, only Florida has never produced a major-party presidential candidate.
  • The Democratic Party has never nominated for president or vice-president anyone from a state west of Nebraska and South Dakota. Nearly half of all Democratic presidential candidates have hailed from the northeast region.

The European Union has voted to eliminate Daylight Saving Time. Member states will be able to choose whether to remain on "permanent summer" or "permanent winter" time. Countries that want to be permanently on summertime will adjust their clocks for the final time in March 2021. Those that opt for permanent wintertime will change their clocks for the final time in October 2021.

Not that it will ever show up, even on LL, but an interesting tidbit. Elvis Luciano, a relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, just became the first person born in the 21st century to appear in a Major League Baseball game.

I would say born in the 2000s, not born in the 21st century. The latter phrasing is either ambiguous or flat-out wrong.
