A bet that requires the other person to make a logical bet is a recipe for disaster. I would make the standard one dollar shutout bet every time.

I can see betting zero from the lead if you hated the category. But then you are counting on the others also sucking at the subject. And in this case, what appeared to be pop culture was more of a sports category.

And 17 years ago today, we have March 19, 2002, Matt Scarpino vs. Linda de Sosa vs. Karen Lempert.

Pannoni's upload did not include the Clue Crew introduction from the casino at the top of the show. It had already been placed in the J-Archive skeleton, though. I wonder if they used those to fill time in games that ran a little short?

I was very happy to have the CC file for this game, as it was media-clue heavy. There was even an audio clue at the bottom of MUSIC APPRECIATION (although Jeopardy mavens should be able to guess this one without the music:
$2000: Originally, Edvard Grieg wrote the music heard here for a play about this title character
Spoiler
Who is Peer Gynt?
A pair of clues from CHAIN LETTERS will be clues of the day. The answers are made up of the letters in the word "chain".
$400: No. 1 son in the Bible
$1600: Detective with No. 1 son
Spoiler
$400: Who is Cain?
$1600: Who is (Charlie) Chan?)
Alex did an impersonation for that second clue which I can't imagine airing today.

Matt risked his shut-out on the last clue of the game, a miss which gave away his runaway game. Fortunately for him it was not a $20,000 mistake, as all three players solved FJ.

Work starts again tomorrow, so I'll see you all next week. Have a good one.

It wasn't bad strategy for Matt to attempt that last clue, since if he clamed Linda could've ringed in and put herself in contention if she was correct.

Only when your nearest opponent can't even get to at least half of your score if right does it make sense to clam on a clue like that (one you'd normally ring in on, not when you clam because you don't know).

Matt getting it wrong or Linda getting it right on clue 30 are effectively the same thing, vis-a-vis a lock game. Matt can only control himself. Guessing at that point in the game when he didn't know the right answer was riskier for him than clamming up. If we're talking about risking his lead, the place to do it was the Daily Double 2 clues earlier. That's where he should have played for the win, if he was going to. His guess on 30 negated his correct response on 28, and then some.

I did that thing where I quote instead of edit. Disregard.

I filled in 2/21/02: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1437

Even though I saw the game years ago I joined the players to make the FJ! clue still 0/4.

Rare game with few Clue Crew clues (the links should work) to navigate. Not a rare game with the players over 10 negs.

I call dibs for 2/22/02 sometime next month.

Make it 0/5 on FJ, but I'm gonna check my notes when I get home to see if I got it back then.

That is as close to a trick question as I think I've seen for FJ. Of course I guessed Jung. Who wouldn't guess Jung?

That's exactly what the writers must have intended. I imagine that in this case it would be an advantage not to be encumbered with the

Since TPTB are suddenly being more aggressive in protecting their i.p., which games on the various hosting sites (YouTube, Dailymotion, archive.org) aren't in the archive yet? I think I've got them all downloaded, but since I jump around, it's easy for me to miss some. I'd like to make sure I've got copies before they get pulled.

(I notice they got Gary Gluck's FJ before I could make myself a copy, even though we'd never archive it with just the last clue available (unless I had absolutely nothing else to put in, of course).)

Thanks. The October 18 game appears to have not uploaded correctly, but it's good to have that link in case he updates it.

I found a guy on YT who has over 3,000 vhs tapes, so I'm HOPEFUL that he might have some episodes not already in the archive. (Another reason that i'm hopeful is that he uploaded an intro to an episode of "Wheel" from around 1994.) unfortunately said user is taking a temporary break from posting.) but i check his channel daily and if he does come back, i will let you all know.)

Awesome. I am very hopeful for the 80s & 90s Jeopardy episodes that are not in the archive. Who is the user on YT? I just want to know.

Another game from the India Cooper tapes, January 8, 1992, Darlynne Burnett vs. Peter Wadhams vs. Bruce Gardner.

I've been chipping away at this game for the last couple of weeks, starting long enough ago that AUGUST for $500
On August 16, 1960 it became a republic with Archbishop Makarios as president
Spoiler
What is Cyprus?
helped me out with this LearnedLeague question from March 22.
Enosis (Greek for "union") was the name given in the 1950s to a campaign for the union of Greece with what other country?
SUNKEN SHIPS is a nice category. Unusual, but not obnoxious, and mostly Things Worth Knowing.

Darlynne spent much of the game in the hole, thanks in part to missing both DJ! round Daily Doubles. But she stayed the course, and headed into FJ! with enough to possibly win. (She hit the Final, but the leading player did too. I hope she got some enjoyment out of those Nintendo games. :)

Clue of the game has to be U.S. GEOGRAPHY for $1000:
Named for a cascade on a nearby river, this is South Dakota's most populous city
Darlynne missed this one too, finding the wrong synonym for "cascade".
Spoiler
What is Sioux Falls? (not Rapid City. That's West River.)
Hey, this is the 4000th post in this thread. Whew. Here's to 4000 more, so we can get the whole darn Archive completed.

Not that I've paid that close of attention, but I don't recall seeing this use of the lower-case letter before:
