Gabby: My mom bribed me to take Italian as my foreign language.

Alex: Why?

Gabby: Well, she had always wanted to go to Italy without having to depend on anyone else to be able to speak English. And I was deciding what language I wanted to take, and I wanted to take something like Swahili or Polish that I'd never get to learn again. And she said, "Well, if you take Italian, I'll take you to Italy."

Alex: Oh, that's--

Gabby: So I took Italian.

Alex: You bet.

Gabby: And it worked out great.

Alex: I would--I would, too, yes.




Alex: Nate Marks is an actuary from Woodland Hills, California, who looks a little bit familiar to me. Didn't I see you on Sports Jeopardy!?

Nate: I was, Alex.

Alex: With Dan Patrick.

Nate: Yes. I played the first season, and I was lucky enough to qualify for the final, and got runner-up in the final that year.

Alex: Runner-up.

Nate: Yeah.

Alex: Which means you won how much money?

Nate: I won $30,000 total.

Alex: $30,000 total.

Nate: Yeah.

Alex: Impressive.

Nate: Not bad.




Alex: Even more impressive, of course, is James here with close to, oh, $800,000. Now, I understand you like eating exotic foods. In fact, you've even eaten scorpion. You're not squeamish about food, right?

James: No, you know, I--"When in Rome" is my policy. Scorpion really didn't taste like much except for the soy sauce it was fried in. But when we were in China, I ate a certain part of the bull anatomy that's supposed to promote virility.

Cue the crying for Nate only having one "The" in the Hawthorne title.

Tough game today and not the best by James and yet he still notches 80K+

The FJ! clue had me work out the names one at a time to be in the over 5 seconds though under 10 seconds range.

Clever way for Nate to get a shout out to his wife.

Ouch. Knowing Nate's former success on Sports J!, I was expecting him to be good competition for James.

Holding the top 5 1-day scores on a show that's had well over 10,000 contestants? Who does that?

James has had a few games where his performance in the SJ round has been relatively pedestrian (at least in the context of his overall standard of play); but one constant throughout his run is that he's been absolutely deadly in DJ.

He has a real chance to pass $1 million in his 14th game (assuming he doesn't lose in his 13th).

So according to the Internet, Alex Trebek earns around $42,500 per episode of Jeopardy. ($10 million per year. 235 episodes per year).

James is averaging more than $70,000 per episode.

The "Internet" (which apparently didn't consult the Archive) is definitely wrong about the number of games per season (it's 230) and is just guessing as to his salary (which is undisclosed but, sure, likely in that range).

Refreshed for a Monday game, and already holding the daily record at $131,127, it's not entirely implausible that James could reach the $1 million mark by earning $148,074 in his 13th game. On the other hand, to do it in his 15th he would need just $49,358 in each of the next three games. It's amazing that we can now think in terms of "just $49,358" -- that's certainly a testimony to James' excellence at the game! With his lowest score so far at $27,190, even managing that for the next six days would put him at $1 million after just 18 days of play.

Ken Jennings needed 74 wins to reach his $2,520,700; James' current average going forward would get him to that number after just 36 games. Allow for a few more 100,000+ days and James could very plausibly break Jennings' regular-play winnings record after fewer than 30 games. Wow!

Actually a little over $148,000 is required, but yeah, I would say he's capable.

And anyone who saw his $114K game, and how much money he left on the table in it, had to have believed that $131K was possible. I would agree that as recently as two weeks ago, few would have thought a contestant could win $131K in a single game.

Both points acknowledged, but the thesis statement remains. When James is on the show, he is the highest-earning individual on that stage, outpacing Trebek. Even if the margin is not exactly what I calculated

Very likely, but not definitely. Trebek could make $20 million a year for all we know.
Not sure what you're trying to show from this link, but the net worth estimators don't have any inside knowledge, and a back-computation from a guess is still a guess.

This was added to the King James page: "After 12 games, James Holzhauer already has earned more than anyone else in their first 26 games. Thus, unless he ends his final game with a negative score, he has clinched the records for Highest Jeopardy! Earnings After 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26 games."

Looks like the author of the page isn't an expert on Jeopardy winnings, thinking he can lose back some of his money.

Also of note: James is now #3 on the all-time money list. Only Brad and Ken have won more. That's from Jeopardy careers that span 15-19 years. James? Less than three weeks.

Another run of the mill $80k payday. This is normal, yet not normal. J! isn't this easy. Have I been watching a different game show all these years!? J! isn't this easy! I missed nearly all of KJ's run due to RL. Is this what it was like to watch?

Instaget FJ. This feels like it should've been a triple get. *shrug*

I feel bad for whoever draws James in the TOC quarterfinals. Not only will they lose badly, there might not be enough money left on the board to even try for a wild card.
