Spoiler for 4/10, as well.
I strongly dislike that somebody making a living (as a gambler, no less) comfortable enough to say "It's only money" is winning so much of it while equally skilled people are struggling to survive.
First of all, I think you misunderstand the context of James's "It's only money" comment. More importantly, what are you saying? Should game shows be abolished? Should people who make what you deem to be a "comfortable living" be denied the opportunity to compete on them? Are you okay with Brad and Ken having won millions of dollars because they never said "It's only money"? Should Mike Trout or Jennifer Lawrence be paid minimum wage? I think it's fantastic that James is being rewarded for his knowledge and for the hard work he put into fortifying it and developing his strategic game plan and even preparing assiduously to hone his buzzer skills.

More importantly, what are you saying?
That's clearly not more important and, as such, I will not address your other questions as I'm assuming no answer I give from my perspective will be satisfying. I will simply agree to disagree and move on.

Here in day 13 of 433, it is not noteworthy to point out media stories, but James' money haul attracted a puff piece on All Things Considered on NPR (I think that is the name of the evening news show). It was brief and painless but is still somewhat of a milestone to earn the NPR mention. It's still not as surprising to me as the mention on Mad Dog Radio (a blowhard sports talk station).

We can at least thank this 538 article, which concludes, "perhaps the nerds — and on Jeopardy! that’s saying something — have won," for using a different word than "broke" in its title (paging J. Morrow).

This article from Variety laments how dull the show is right now.

Yet another Holzhauer article, this time in The Washington Post:

‘Jeopardy!’ winner James Holzhauer keeps dominating. Does it matter if he broke the game?

This article includes comments from Mark "The Beast" Labbett on playing Holzhauer on "The Chase", what it takes to be a super quizzer, etc.

Also features an interesting fact at the end about JH and "The Chase" ... never heard that story before (if true).

ABC Nightline came by to O’Brien’s last night to gawk at Jeopardy! folk doing trivia in the wake of Jackie Fuchs’ LA Magazine article linked above. Pam, Brad, Dileep Rao, and myself got interviewed fairly extensively so tune in tonight at 12:35 AM ET to see how much of my coattail mugging makes the cut.

Here's an article about the show from 1989 that I came across.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm ... story.html

The passage on how modest the winnings were even for the biggest champions - obviously long before the doubling of clue values and the lifting of the 5-day limit - seems especially quaint in light of James's run.

Most people who win on "Jeopardy!" are happy, for a time. It's fun to win money on TV, in front of viewer Frank Sinatra, for an activity that does not require heavy lifting. Still, while big winners are embarrassed to say so, many feel that $20,000 or $50,000 or $100,000 is nice, but, as one put it, "it's not winning the lottery." They are not fixed for life. They might put a "Jeopardy!" windfall down on a house (one winner called his Casa "Jeopardy!"). It can pay some of a child's college bills or allow a winner to treat himself to things he might not otherwise buy. Lowenthal says the only thing he's bought so far is a rather expensive kaleidoscope that he found at a craft fair. "That's about as frivolous as I get," he says. "I'm not a high frivol."

And in the category of "The more things change...":

There's the buzzer, for one thing. Operating the real thing on the set is something contestants get to do for the first time during a brief tape-day rehearsal. Learning how to work it is a major stumbling block for some.....

An article about James in the NY Post by our very own Vermonter.

https://tinyurl.com/y395yr8s

(contains spoilers for those who aren't caught up through today's show in their viewing)

An interesting note by the author:
In my last match, I briefly thought about risking all of my $12,800 on a Daily Double concerning chemistry, which I considered one of my strongest categories. As Trebek awaited my decision, I realized that such a large bet would be unheard of, so I chickened out and went for $4,000 — and ended up losing as a result.
So even the guy behind "The Final Wager" couldn't pull the trigger on a TDD that he knew was optimal for the situation (acknowledging that he was a bit younger at the time - the match he's referring to was a UTOC game that aired in 2005. http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=185). Of course, it would be an understatement to say that, 14 years later, DD wagers of at least $12,800 are no longer unheard-of. :D I'm sure the 2019 version of Vermonter would have gone all-in without hesitation. But this does speak to the psychological barriers that so many contestants who aren't professional gamblers face that prevent them from risking large sums, even when they might be tempted to.
