Well Rachel, who is a Jeopardy! non-winner, won 20k which is more than a lot of contestants lately.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 10:29 am Comments:Spoiler
Perhaps things will turn around next week for J! alums when a non-winner appears? I thought Ashok's $7K Q was a little more difficult than that level even though I happened to know it without choices. Just because the Disney parks are in CA & FL did not necessarily eliminate the more ranch-sounding states. When the 50:50 narrowed it down it still left two sunshine states. Even if the audience had been available I'm not sure how much help they would have been on it.

Nice to see Ashok again, since he's one of the reasons I am a ToC enabler.

Got Scott's $10,000 question in less than a second, which is what happens when you combine my two strongest categories. YEARS and CURRENCIES.
Also got the $20,000 question immediately. At the time Meghan Markle got married, my grandma was looking up some fun facts about the wedding. She told me about the designer of the dress and Givenchy. Also, it was a question on Pointless recently. Twice this month, Hubert de Givenchy was the answer to a question on Millionaire.

I was mostly sure of that question, but initially I thought Dollar/2004 was a correct combo, which I got away from by recalling I was a high school senior during Sydney's opening ceremonies, so it was 2000. But while Peseta/1992, Yuan/2008, and Pound/2012 were sure combinations, I couldn't put my finger on where 2004 was. Which was disturbing to me, but not enough to prevent me from making Dollar/2004 my final answer.LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 12:43 am Got Scott's $10,000 question in less than a second, which is what happens when you combine my two strongest categories. Regular Joe from Alabama gets fashion question, takes seemingly WAG, goes home! I was about 90% confident of the answer, couldn't have done it without the multiple choice. But safe to eliminate Dolce & Gabbana and Prada, as both labels are still run by their namesake designersLucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 12:43 am Got Scott's $10,000 question in less than a second, which is what happens when you combine my two strongest categories. Ashok's Disney question was a head slapper. Blindingly obvious only after the reveal. I guess at $7K it couldn't be anything BUT Florida
Olympic Cities - Took more than a second, but I was able to line up Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London to get to the answer
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed like every other player was leaving with $50K or $100K!

Usain Bolt (math question)
Furniture (geography question)
TV question (TV question)
Spoiler
After a couple of false starts, I got this at home, tv on pause, no lights, no audience, and no host pushing me to answer. Who knows how much time Mike actually spent up there, but Chris was pushing for a coin flip, not making the player feel comfortable enough to do the math. Could I have answered it live? No idea. Probably would have blanked like Mike if I hadn't done any specific under-the-gun math prep. Not a fan of math questions on the show at this level. I suppose some people might just know the fact outright from following sports.
My process:
1. Convert 1.63 seconds to hours: multiply by ~40 to get to 1 minute, then multiply by 60 to get to 1 hour (so a factor of 2,400)
2. Convert meters per second to meters per hour: multiply 20 by 2,400 = 48,000 meters per hour
3. Convert to mph (1 mile = 1600m), so divide 48,000 by 1600 to get 30 (close enough!)

I'd never heard of an Adirondack chair, but recognize it after looking it up. All you needed to know was the state where you'd find the Adirondacks? OK.

Grandma's reasoning didn't really inspire confidence, but she got him to the right answer.

He assumed it was 28 or 38 but couldn't do the math under the lights so he walked. Said he would have guessed C. 38, but the answer was B. 28.
Wonder if he excluded A and D using logic, or from watching the show and recognizing the pattern, or both!

For the chairs I learn a lot from The Amazing Race including the names of the chairs after team members had to build a bunch of them.

In track and field they call the 1500m race the metric mile. 20 x 75 = 1500. So 1.63s x 75 is 1 x 75 plus a little more than half of 75. So roughly 75 + 45 = 120 seconds for one mile or 30mph. Close enough.
In light of recent discussions in the thread, I'd love to see how long a contestant would be given if they were continuing to parse the math.

Well done. I went back and rewatched. Mike wasn’t getting anywhere with the math, so I see why Chris pushed him to either guess or walk away.Golf wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:13 pmIn track and field they call the 1500m race the metric mile. 20 x 75 = 1500. Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
The show's website is terrible with spoilers in their "This Week on Millionaire" videos. Yet, I still watch them for some reason. Best of retro luck to alietr and 1stlvlthinker this week, although I (probably) already know how one of you fares.
I went by both logic and pattern, then actually did the math to check my work. We both remembered an episode of The Middle from years back where Axl and his friends dine and dash - bolting out of the restaurant at 20 mph. They were decent athletes, so assume an Olympic caliber athlete is a little faster and there's your answer.
One of my two local affiliates messed up and Monday's game aired last Friday where Ashok's game should have aired. Nevertheless, my brother (better at math) and I both got to work on this one.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:01 pmSpoiler

I didn't even bother with the math. I can run 18 mph and no human can get close to 38 or 48, so that leaves 28.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:01 pm The math made my brain hurt. Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
I watched today's show but local news broke in with a press conference about some would-be terrorist's arrest and I had to play the Bolt question off Game Show Kingdom (which let me think without a contestant distracting me).
My thinking was 15 mph = a 4-minute mile, so 18 mph would be a mile in 5/6 the time (since 18 is 6/5 of 15), i.e. 200 seconds. So that's 528 feet in 20, 264 feet in 10, 26.4 feet in 1. So 1.64 seconds is 40-something feet, well under 20 meters. 28 mph is almost 30 mph, a 2-minute mile. So that's 528 feet in 12 seconds, 264 in 6, 44 in 1. So 1.64 seconds is around 70 feet, which is close enough to 20 meters to work for me.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
Easy at home, love math. Worked this out sans calculator here.
Spoiler
First off, 18 is out, Alabama's wide receiver, Henry Ruggs III, is at 22, 23 at top end speed. As for the math, I like relatively round numbers to solve these. I choose to make the seconds 1.5 and the 20 meters 70, since roughly (although obviously not exactly) a meter is 3.5 feet. If he goes 70 feet in 1.5 seconds, how many miles per hour is that? Well, I know 3600 seconds is an hour, therefore it takes 1800 two second intervals to reach the same duration. The average of those sets at 1.5 is 2400, with the latter as my other multiplicand. So 70*2400 is going to be 168,000. That's how many feet are traveled in an hour. Divide that by feet in a mile to get the answer. I'm going to use 5,000 since it's easier/rounder than 5,280. Should be 33.6. Given we gave less time to run more distance and made the miles less, the answer has to be smaller than 33.6. Only 28 is. B, final answer. Give me my money.

Re: Millionaire 2018-19 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]
Interesting the several routes people are taking on this one. My Bolt logic (after wrestling a bit, but I was not going to let math defeat me):
Spoiler
First of all, I know marathoners run 13 MPH, so that was a starting point and I know 1,500M = 1 mile. Then I figured 20M in 1.63 seconds = 10M in .8 seconds, 100M = 8 seconds and 1,000M = 80 seconds and 1,500M = 120 seconds, or 2 minutes/mile. 60 minutes/2 = 30 MPH. 28 MPH it is. Next question, please.
