Alex's impression for the first clue in A LIL RAP CATEGORY was not ok.

For those that missed the family of Oscar winners clue a little while back your chance at redemption is today.

After the chats Alex was ready to give control to Adrienne even though's E.J.'s little light was properly on. Alex got a great unintended delayed laugh by clarifying to a staffer off-camera, "That was a one finger, not a two."

That type of FJ! category always generates a reflexive expletive. In today's case I was able to match E.J. & Adrienne for the solve as I had nothing better to guess and it seemed to fit just fine even though I knew nothing of the source. Jim got a laugh for his miss and just in case someone here has never seen it previously it stands for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... erms#FUBAR

Better today with the players 5/6 on big clues and E.J. having three of them was easily the best player today to earn the repeat.

I said "Hellenic" for "Hellenistic" on a 50-50-90. It turns out that the Hellenic era immediately preceded the Hellenistic era. IMO that's some neg-bait right there.

Ran the Restaurants and surprisingly, Elements and Authors' Rhyme Time.

I don't understand that "flimflam game" clue at all. I can't think of any terms for revered people that have "con" in them, nor do I see how "con" has to do with games.

"It's the Mexican name for the Rio Grande." Wait, isn't "Rio Grande" already a Spanish term? Why would they call it something else when it already HAS a Spanish name?!

Somehow managed to WAG both Bellow's Cellos and Lessing's Blessings. No idea how I pulled the latter.

Only guess for FJ! was the right one.

Refreshing chemistry among the contestants. They were loose and seemed to be having fun.

Same here - thought they were trying to be clever. After I heard the correct response I realized I have heard it somewhere before, but would not have been able to pull it.

Same here. I was 80% sure I'd be wrong as I didn't see how the clue led to it other than that I couldn't think of any other word.

My DirecTV schedule and WNEM's both said that both J! and Wheel were blocked out for a home shopping special they do quarterly called "Better Deals", but apparently only Wheel actually was.

So it's in the movie? I was so curious I just bought the Kindle edition of Wolfe to see if the word is in there. I first read it a million years ago. Apparently not. No matter. It's a great book (and movie!)
I just never thought of it - best I could come up with was malware. Pretty easy in retrospect...

I assume it was intentional they eliminated "bug" by including it in the clue, though its etymology is fairly well known (and was the subject of a $1,000,000 clue in WWTBAM's prime).

Yeah, no way was I getting that one. My response, which I wouldn't have rung in with, was "What is Beeg Reever?" I mean, it's only fair.

Mrs Penguin made the same neg. I paused the show so we could look it up because I figured "Hellenic" would turn out to be an equally correct response. We were quite surprised to find out it was unambiguously wrong.

Loved the moment when Alex handed control of the board to the wrong person and we heard the yell from offstage and Alex gave us a glimpse into how he keeps track of these things. The ole finger method.

Ran the Rhyming Authors category even though my pre-calls of Dickens' Chickens and Twain's Trains didn't show up.

The right word occurred to me in time for FJ. Another day it might not have. This wasn't a fact I knew at all, but "glitch" just seemed like a good fit. But I did my due diligence and tried to come up with alternatives. I didn't think of FUBAR but did think of SNAFU, which I might have put down in desperation if I hadn't already thought of glitch.

For the Rio Grande clue, for some reason I was fairly confident they were going for Rio Bravo, but I would have hit a brick wall if asked for more information. A cursory online search indicates that Rio Bravo (sin del Norte) would probably be accepted.

I usually do well with wordplay, but I did terribly on the pronoun category.

Got FJ; wasn't certain, but it was my best guess.
