"arouse compassion" seemed to be hinting at pity -> pitiful. Not sure why this wasn't the answer they were going for, or why it required a pause. 4/5 in that category, missing only 'lousy', of all things.

jury-rigged. I'll be watching the poll numbers closely.

I said Greenland. On the Dalmatia clue I initially had Croatia but switched to Poland, presumably confusing one doggy coastal area with another (Pomerania).

I don't know if I would have gotten Amadeus if I'd considered real people. As it is, The Phantom of the Opera popped into my head, and despite general unease that I later attributed to things like "it's set in Paris, not Vienna" and "the Phantom didn't actually die," it's all I was left with.

Had jerry-rigged and pathetic.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I hate Mondays. No chance on that FJ. I kept counting the letters in Antarctica to see if they still came out to 10. Jury/jerry-rigged took a little thought but I had plenty of time. Started with Furies, thought of and quickly rejected Fates and Muses, landed on gorgons and was happy with that. Love Amadeus--both the film and the play. Saw the movie in the theater twice and later bought it on VHS. Saw the play in Los Angeles in 1998 with David Suchet as Salieri. I wasn't missing this one. Had Luther as soon as I saw the name Tetzel. I tried to brainstorm other possibilities but couldn't come up with anything other than Johann Eck, which didn't tempt me away from Luther for even a second. I finally said to Mrs Penguin, "Either this is really easy or really cruel". She agreed. So did our three contestants, I'm guessing.

Somehow I thought Dalmatia was in Asia Minor--somewhere in there with Cappadocia and Galatia and places like that. So I guessed Turkey. Cornwallis' surrender is something I remember from 7th grade. Not sure why. I knew Django Reinhardt and have listened to some of his stuff.

Jerry-rigged. I knew "jury-rigged" but thought it was just a less common older variant. I went with jerry- to be safe. I'm glad Alex confirmed that they were prepared to accept that. I doubt we'd have reached a consensus on this board otherwise and I might not have checked the box. As it is, we can argue about whether they should accept jerry-rigged, but not about whether they would have.

Pathetic. Knew they'd have to accept pitiful as soon as it was said.

Played Monday off the Clue of the Day. Eventually got to Polynesia, but it took a lot longer than 30 seconds. Probably would have gone with Greenland under show conditions.

Jury rig on Tuesday

Said Fates on Wednesday to have something

Thursday and Friday were instagets.

Man, that was a tough run of FJs! Missed the gorgon one, I think, because I don't associate the story of Medusa with Homer at all. Completely blanked on the jerry-rigged one, couldn't come up with anything that seemed at all plausible.

Greenland - terrible clue
I just broke the tie of 17-17 for Jerry over Jury which exactly matches my thought process in picking one over the other. I might have answered "Jery - rigged" and hoped for a merciful ruling, lol..
Answered "harpies", in lieu of "Furies" which I couldn't remember. Not familiar with Gorgons at all.
Didn't know Amadeus was a play. I've only seen a little bit of it on a screen in Mozart's home last September. So duh, it had to be a play and they got the DVD player later!

I'm surprised that the Polynesia get-rate is coming in around 20%. I thought we might see a single digit on this one.

interesting that jury-rigged/jerry-rigged came out evenly divided.
