TD 426 - Grab Bag (all questions revealed)

Post by Ironhorse »

I couldn't think of a theme I liked this time around, so miscellany it is!

1. Lowest score wins.
2. Wrong answers will score the sheep answer, plus 3 points.
3. You may DROP one question for a score of 0.
3. You may also choose the SHEEP on one question for a score of the most popular answer on that question.
4. Letters are required for questions 3 or 4. I will try to PM you if you forget if time permits. (Last time, a couple people submitted right before the deadline without letters and I didn't have a chance to PM them.)
5. No cheating.
6. Submit here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

Entries will be due Monday, July 8 by 1 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

1. Name one of the following things that begin with Red.

We ended up with 35 players, which I'm pretty happy with. Thanks to everyone who participated, including the two players who indicated they are playing for the first time.

1. Name one of the following things that begin with Red.

Popular link aggregator site where posters upvote or downvote material. Reddit
Iconic comedy performer born Richard Eheart. Red Skelton
Anthony Kiedis is the lead singer of this funk rock band. Red Hot Chili Peppers
2012 George Lucas film based on the Tuskegee Airmen. Red Tails
Illinois company known for its movie and game rental kiosks. Redbox
Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen is more commonly known by this name. Red Baron
Caryl Chessman was executed on charges of being this criminal who terrorized Pasadena in the late 1940s. Red Light Bandit
Open-air concert venue in Jefferson County, Colorado. Red Rocks Amphitheater
Rapper best known for his collaborations with Method Man. Redman
Classic playground game that led to a California school district settling a lawsuit for $15,000 when a student got hurt. Red Rover
Name of the Oklahoma-Texas football rivalry. Red River Shootout/Rivalry

This question attracted a pair of big co-sheeps. I had honestly never heard of Red Buttons. I wasn't intending to set up negbait there and would have pinned Red Skelton down beyond birth name had I been aware of him. The OK-TX game is known by a variety of names (Shootout, Rivalry, Classic), but I accepted anything as long as it had Red River.

Also, I'm mildly surprised Red Rover is still played at some schools. It had been previously banned when I arrived at kindergarten - in 1992.

INCORRECT - 9
immaf (Red Buttons)

Red Rocks Amphitheater - 6 (co-sheep)
AFRET CMS, Woof, twelvefootboy, clprez, gamawire, econgator

Red River Shootout - 6 (co-sheep)

floridagator, threearruda

Red Tails - 1 (singleton!)
Peachbox

Red Skelton - 1 (singleton!)
merica

Red Baron - 1 (singleton!)
Coach P

2. Name one of the candidates who participated in the first Democratic primary debate (June 26/27).

For the most part, everybody was all over the place on this one. Unfortunately, I can't afford to give out $1000 to everybody who plays.

Amy Klobuchar - 5 (sheep)
MollyQMurphy, merica, Woof, floridagator, clt013

Andrew Yang - 4
MarkBarrett, qwerqwerqwer, ChexMix, xxaaaxx

SINGLETONS:

Cory Booker (econgator)
Eric Swalwell (barandall800)
Kirsten Gillibrand (heppm01)
Kamala Harris (choplakecity)
Beto O'Rourke (Kirbstar)
Michael Bennet (AFRET CMS)

Drop - jeffwolfe

Unused: Bill de Blasio, John Delaney, John Hickenlooper

3. Name one of these words or phrases that appears in the song Bohemian Rhapsody.

A. 1999 Catherine Johnson musical, which would be adapted into a feature film nine years later Mamma Mia!
B. Italian scientist called the “father of observational astronomy” Galileo
C. Clown frequently depicted in the commedia dell’arte Scaramouche
D. Recent NHL top draft pick Jack Hughes, or any of his teammates Devil
E. California movie ticketing company Fandango
F. 1975 Fleetwood Mac song, also covered by the Dixie Chicks and Smashing Pumpkins Landslide
G. In psychology, a stimulus that causes recall of a trauma Trigger
H. Infamous demon with nicknames including “lord of the flies” Beelzebub
I. Answer to this 2018 Final Jeopardy: “This character's famed entrance aria actually introduces him as a handyman, repeats his name & adds "la-la-la-la-las" Figaro
J. Roy Sullivan made the Guinness Book of World Records for coming into contact with this seven times Lightning

The only reason I asked for letters was because of possible negbait with the Lightning also being an NHL team. Nobody ended up making this mistake.

Six of you accepted Freddie's invitation to do the fandango:

Fandango - 6 (sheep)
ReinholdGoldthwait, MarkBarrett, qwerqwerqwer, ChexMix. Threearruda, Saturnalia

Curious who got the singleton on Red Baron? I was going to use that, and said, Naw, everybody will say that. Nuts. Got near-sheeped instead.

Didn't mind sheeping too much on the next one. I like that 5 people said Amy K. Family-friend from when we were kids.

I thought I was clever saying Klobuchar. Instead I painted myself white and went baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I knew Skelton was the correct answer and recognized Buttons as negbait.

Moved my drop to question 2 at the last minute. Good thing, because the answer I had was wrong. Shows you how much I've been paying attention to the democratic debates.
Went through the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody several times before settling on Jack Hughes's new team. Surprised more people didn't say Mamma Mia.
Oh, and, "Curse you, Red Baron!"

5. Name one of the pizza toppings available from Domino’s online menu. (There are 26 options, so there’s a good chance that what you’re thinking of is on there, unless it’s really weird. Or even if it is.)

I used the online menu available for me here in Chapel Hill, but I quickly discovered that I couldn't just go by this, because some franchises offer alternative toppings (there's even a website devoted listing where you can find anchovies at Domino's, for instance), and in one case, somebody answered a topping available in Europe but not here. As long as I could find evidence of a submission being offered at Domino's somewhere, I accepted it, which meant in this case that all entries were accepted. Also, I decided to separate cheese from extra cheese, as there was a past advertising campaign devoted to extra cheese.

Banana peppers - 4 (co-sheep)
shambolic, SenseiCAY, casketromance, 9021amyers

Black olives - 4 (co-sheep)
roey, Woof, floridagator, clprez

Italian sausage (badgerfellow)
Garlic (Peachbox)
Onions (MarkBarrett)
Extra cheese (squarekara)
Anchovies (AFRET CMS)

6. Name a book by C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien. (No series, so “Chronicles of Narnia”, or “Lord of the Rings” would not be acceptable.)

Lewis was more popular than his fellow Inkling here.

Mere Christianity - 5 (sheep)
badgerfellow, shambolic, AFRET CMS, floridagator, barandall800

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - 4
MarkBarrett, twelvefootboy, threearruda, spell4yr

A Grief Observed (choplakecity)
Out of the Silent Planet (Woof)

Drop:
roey, SenseiCAY, merica, clprez, clt013, Saturnalia, 9021amyers

With three singletons, squarekara vaults into first. However, we have some big sheeps ahead, so stay tuned.

Standings after 6:

I thought the US flag might be the "it's so obvious that everyone avoids it" answer, but wasn't brave enough to try it (good thing). Nope, that prize goes to the LOTR books and the Hobbit (did Two Towers seriously go unused?). Meanwhile, "Mere Christianity" sheeps, and out of 26 toppings, 4 people just randomly thought of banana peppers. Never change, TD

that is pretty much my reasoning for going with it....i guess others had that same game plan as well

banana peppers sheeping was whacked for sure...is my favourite topping on a pizza, so i went with it thinking others might not even think of it...almost went with jalapenos...wish i had because nobody went with it
