Some of you really need to get acquainted with the classics. By which I mean early seasons of "The Simpsons."

"The whole state is suddenly in the grip of lottery fever, and Springfield is no exception. In fact, every copy of Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery' has been checked out from the Springfield Public Library. Of course, the book does not contain any hints on how to win the lottery. It is, rather, a chilling tale of conformity gone mad."

I had the same reaction - almost like he was encouraging a big wager.

NHO Shirley Jackson. Don't like fiction, and don't like violence or horror. Guessed Agathie Christie just to have a guess.

Sam's 4 day total is even better in context of his low payday in the FJ triple stumper game (which would have sent him home with savvy wager by second). And great get on his DD3 - I was careless with parsing the clue and just Pavlov'd Ionizing Radiation. Yes, please finish the 5-pack!

My mom was a fan of The Lottery, and I read it in high school for fun when noticing it was in the short story anthology we were read something out of, so I did get this one.

I thought that "The Lottery" was a much older story than that, so I guessed Edward Bulwer-Lytton for FJ.

That was a big fail on my part, then. I hope I don't do anything that stupid in the LLRC.

I've never heard of her either.

Also, B-L died in 1873. On the plus side, he does have an "award" named after him-

FWIW, I was 80% sure that was the correct response, but if was wrong I would have dropped to 31200, giving Christina a chance to get it and rise to 15600, taking away the runaway chance. It just wasn't worth that risk.

Add me to the NHOI club for FJ (and I can name some fairly obscure book awards)

There's a big difference between never having heard of the Shirley Jackson Awards (I hadn't either, but it was immaterial to getting the clue)-
https://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/nominees/
and never having heard of Shirley Jackson. "The Lottery" is one of the most famous short stories of the 20th C. She also wrote the novel The Haunting of Hill House, which has been made into 2 films and a Netflix series...

BTW, it looks like the awards only started in 2017. (Maybe with some of that Netflix cash?) The website hasn't been updated in a while...

Wow! That is some clutch analysis to sort all that out in real time! That 'stache must be the source of your superpower :).

Wasn't there a Shirley Jackson clue in either an FJ or DD not too many years ago?

There was indeed:

20th CENTURY WOMEN AUTHORS
Readers' letters to this author about her 1948 short story asked where the title event was held & if they could go & watch.

And I got it then. :| Just couldn't get the gray matter out of first gear this time.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Don't tell anyone, but I have a little calculator hidden in there.

In reality though, I just practiced doing quick math with different J! dollar amounts. For example, knowing that each column in double Jeopardy adds up to $6000, or that the bottom row is $12000 is super helpful. I only had to do that near the end of games, the rest of it I'm completely ignoring the scoreboard.
