Laughing at the clue for the baseball commissioner and it using his initials.

Great move by Sam on DD1 to double up 6600 as with a miss the deficit would not have been huge to overcome.

JJ left 2800 on the table at DD3 though only would have mattered to Sam's wallet by the end of the game.

The FJ! clue was a brow wiper as I spent the break running the map the best I could. I matched Sam for the correct response though my confidence level would be way below others who got it right. They all count the same.

So I guess Sam is now being moved into the ToC following the one coming up this year?

Yes. The field for the 2019 ToC was already set and announced prior to Sam's run airing. Ryan Bilger has shared that he is the alternate for 2019. If he does not get to play then he will be joining Sam.

There was a surprise waiting for me when I checked the board to see if the FJ! clue response had been mentioned in a Current Events thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4492&p=283424#p283424

Zero memory of doing that although I must have retained some recognition or good karma that helped me today.

I'm only just dipping my toes into trying to figure out optimal FJ! bets, but am I wrong in thinking second place should have bet $8,000? Locks out third place and beats first place if they both get it wrong?

Yeah, anything between 6601 and 8000 covers both a zero and an incorrect lockout bet. 8399 is the maximum to not fall behind a doubled third place but does lose (in what would be a pretty frustrating fashion) if both 1st and 2nd answer incorrectly.

This game is a draw for the Weak Form of Shore's Conjecture. The second-place player bet "small." --Bob

Congrats to Sam on becoming a 5-time champion with another excellent game.

And also (one day late...sorry) for becoming J!s 100th contestant all-time to hit $100K in regular-season winnings.

It would have been a real shocker if Sam missed today's FJ, since he got this question right in LL80:

https://learnedleague.com/question.php?80&18&3

For the "Skipper" clue, it would have been tempting to respond with "Who is Jonas Grumby?"

Asking for the author of Bleak House for $1,600 seemed overvalued.

It's great that Sam has now guaranteed his qualification for the first post-2019 TOC. He has played really smart, and I like that he's shown that you don't have to be a professional gambler to make large but strategically sound DD wagers of the type that some people mischaracterized as "risky" during James's run. It'll be interesting to see how long he can keep it going, with 2 strong players, Nathan Kaplan and Jason Zuffranieri, among the challengers later this week.

i guess the contestants never watched ncis seasons 4 and 5...i learned grenouille meant frog because of the arms dealer that had the nick name of "le grenouille (the frog)", so for that dish was easy to get to frog legs

I speak a bit of French anyway, but yeah, that's certainly what I was thinking of, too.

Even better, that's his nickname. Balls from his era have "Allan H. Selig" as the signature.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I hope you had a great watch party. You were a joy to watch play. It's great when players join in to share their experiences. By now you've caught up on the 32 games of mayhem that preceded your taping but you ran into a very tough champion. Great job of wagering, we don't see that every day. Nice PSA about the raptor migration :).

FJ was an instaget with some residual doubt as my geography knowledge is whatever I was forced to learn 50 years ago. I was aware of the feud and possibly lawsuits over the years.

WOOOOO!!! So glad to FINALLY now have a post-James 5-day champ! Sam, you are proving yourself to be an EXCELLENT player, and I cannot wait to see you in the 2020/2021 TOC! I like your strategy a lot, and for up and coming players who may be a bit too nervous to try out James Holzhauer's revolutionary style, yours very well could be a great one to practice for many!

For the most part I found these boards very easy.

Ran Wicked! and Potpourri, and was 4/4 in the clues revealed in Captain and Lab, but 0/5 in Boston and Follow the Leader.

George Eliot = Middlemarch and whoever $400 was in Follow the Leader seemed obscure.

I've heard of Macedonia and i know of its relationship, but I just had a complete blank on this.

I had a blast playing against Sam and Peter tonight! Sam wrote: "Major props to Peter and JJ who brought it in our Jeopardy match. She played a great game and somehow even made me like her with her feather-ruffling pre-game smack talk"!

Yep, before the game, in the green room, I told Sam: You look tired, like you're ready to go home. And that's a really ugly shirt!

He looked shocked until he realized I meant it in good fun. What a great player he is. Looking forward to seeing him again on ToC next year.
