Roey had 4000s across the board for all 3 DD wagers and with two to the good it was enough to lock the match. He needed the runaway as Jennifer had the sole solve on the FJ! clue. Her reward was $2000 for second while it could have been bigger if she had been a little closer.

Not Sam's day as Roey was very proficient on the buzzer timing quickly. The players set a good pace skipping all over the board and this game is good practice for someone that wants to try to keep up with the speed of how some matches can go. There is no pausing on the stage so home viewers who dream of being a contestant better now be pause happy with the recording at home either.

The FJ! category had me trying to play the precall game and I went from explorers to authors to royalty and finally settled on Samuel Pepys. Nope, wrong guy though right area.

The clue had me do better than I do sometimes as I took my time and read it twice. It was a nice aha moment when the key word of "fishing" let me know who to write. I would have hated to be in the spot to get to his famous work and then blank on his name.

Does J! like him?

Got this fj in about 10 seconds. Walton was the first 1600s author to come to mind, then I remembered his most famous book, and I know an angler is a fish.

I went with Daniel Defoe, knowing he was probably a few decades too late.

Close shave on Final, but I eventually latched onto fishing and that got me to Walton with about five seconds to spare. Feels nice after a bad miss yesterday.

Great run Sam, can't wait to see you again in a future ToC. Better to have a bad day on day 6 than day 1. I know he's on these boards too, so Roey, congrats to you as well for a great debut performance! Can't believe AT suggested to dump your girlfriend.

Locked on in Charles Cotton --> Cotton Mather --> Increase Mather. Thought the fishing cabin was just noise. :|

Well, Sam, you got beat fair and square, but not before doing what you came to do for five glorious games. And you've got a ton of time now to prep for your TOC. Of course, so does Ryan Bilger who I'm sure is itching for a rematch. I'm hoping to see you guys duke it out in a two-day final.

Mrs Penguin and I both figured FJ was referring to the Compleat Angler guy, but neither of us could pull his name. She gave up and went with Pepys just to have something. I settled on Watt as possibly being the right name but knowing I was probably not quite on the money.

Thank you! I've ignored his advice but at least I have a story. My gf had to prepare herself mentally to see that on air.

I made it from there all the way to the first name (Isaak) but whiffed the surname with Singer realizing too late. Doubtful I could've gotten to the right surname...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

There is the anglerfish, but I'm guessing Walton's title employed the "fisherman" sense of the word. Otherwise, who was he writing for?

Isaac Merritt Singer authored a patent application. And he's only 200 years late.

Sad to see you go, Sam. You were a great player and I admired your strategy. It just wasn't your day today, but 5 wins with over $150K won is a great feat and certainly a huge thing to cherish!

Also, congrats to the new champ Roey. I found it funny how you went $4K three times in a row on DD's, LOL!

Great job, Roey! It was a no-doubter, and I'm glad that Sam's 'stache run didn't end on a mistake. Not to curse you retro-actively, but your buzzer skills and installed database look like long run potential. I wondered why Alex asked your age right off the bat - nice story. My late brothers called me "smell" their whole lives - it annoyed me briefly as an adult until I realized that everyone who called me that loved me.

I almost defeated myself because my first thought about a cabin and a lake was Walden Pond - of course not that. But I let the Walden / Walton similarity create doubt that I was recalling the right surname, like a couple of boardies here have already posted. Izaak, I had cold - I love that spelling.

I thought the Ibex clue was pretty neg-baity. If I recall it was a top box clue, so less damage. The critters actually are easy to tell apart, the ibex has almost semi-circular horns in the images I just googled. The oryx are long spear like straight horns as the pic on the show. Still, it was a trap. I probably didn't learn this information today, but that is on me.
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

All but the top box on TV Channels. I've only barely heard of CNBC so I didn't know what it stood for (I thought the "NBC" part was the same as in original-recipe NBC) or what kind of shows are on it.

Had a couple brain farts, but other than getting only $400 in Star Is Born and not running any categories, I think I did all right. I do seem to be getting a bit better in general.

Where I'm not getting better is FJ! Absolute NHOI on the correct response here.
