Billie Eilish's song "Bad Guy," after spending 9 weeks stuck at #2, has dethroned "Old Town Road" from the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

9 weeks is the record for a #1 to have languished at #2 before ascending to the top spot. Eilish is the first #1 haver (haver?) to be born in the 2000s.

Old Town Road hung in there at #1 for 19 weeks (thanks to Billboard's rules covering remixes); Despacito and One Sweet Day are tied for second place with 16 weeks each.

Oh, and speaking of chart records, something I forgot to post last week.

Along with some other less-interesting records, Tool's new single "Fear Inoculum", from the upcoming album of the same name, is the longest single ever to make the Billboard Hot 100, at 10 min, 21 sec. It looks like it's dropped off the chart after only 1 week, though.

The rest of the longest and shortest singles:

not shocking...the hype train may have been derailed...haven't seen anything about tool in my social media feeds in a while when that was pretty much all i saw for over a week...but i guess that will change when their highly anticipated album is released next week

Donna Lewis's "I Love You Always Forever" stayed at #2 for nine weeks also, but it never bumped "Macarena" out of its way.

Edit: I've just learned, almost two years later, that Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and Missy Elliott's "Work It" are tied at ten weeks for longest stint at #2 without reaching the top.

Not that weird. The Watchmen movie used a song in the trailer not used in the film proper or included on the soundtrack.

Kind of getting off topic here, too.

The female characters in the comic strip B.C. are getting proper names. "Cute Chick" is now Grace, and "Fat Broad" is now Jane.

Rushdie would be the fifth repeat winner of the Booker Prize, after:
  • Hilary Mantel (Wolf Hall [2009] / Bring Up the Bodies [2012])
  • J.M. Coetzee (Life & Times of Michael K. [1983] / Disgrace [1999])
  • Peter Carey (Oscar and Lucinda [1988] / True History of the Kelly Gang [2001])
  • J.G. Farrell (Troubles* [1970] / The Siege of Krishnapur [1973]) *awarded retrospectively in 2010; through 1970, the prize was awarded for the previous year's books, but that was changed in 1971 to current year's books, so at the time, no book published in 1970 was ever eligible
