What is ERA? The most commonly used entry over the whole history of the NYT crossword is AREA, followed by ERA, and then ERIE.

Spoiler
Correct! I wondered if enough people knew which island Wellington is on, and if they didn't, how many would be inclined to guess the island farther south.

Fantastic clue!

That said, I'd rather the category was Clothing instead of Fashion

Geography: This is the only UN-recognized nation state named after a historical woman.
Spoiler
What is St. Lucia?
(Wording is so as to exclude that Ireland is named after a goddess.)

Why do you post the answers when the original post already has the answer?

Does the "UN-recognized" stipulation eliminate anything else?

It probably shouldn't, but somebody could try something like making an argument over the Virgin Islands, so I like to pin things as exactly as possible.

On the topic of etymology:

THE PERIODIC TABLE

In ancient times, this element was named after a Mediterranean island where it was abundant.

I really like this one! And I had not heard that bit about its etymology, as my answer of rhodium would indicate.

I like it. I just couldn't think of a(nother) place that could conceivably called a nation that was named after a woman. Although after looking up who the Virgin Islands were named for, I realized there could end up being arguments about the historicity of St. Lucy. But no biggie, it's not like we're writing for the show here.
