Daryn gave a plug for the NYT mini crossword and I got the impression Alex was not aware of it. Alex probably solves only the main crossword in the print edition. I like the mini as it's a short & easy exercise before the main event. 11 seconds is my best though usually longer in the teens on a good day. On a bad day I can take over a minute.

MUSICAL LEGENDS had a rough start with the bottom up play as two players lost $1000 and no one knew the $800 guy. I also lost the $1000 as I 50/50/90ed with Calloway.

The FJ! clue was one I would not have known in 1984 though by 2019 there had been enough clue usage of this type to help me today:
Spoiler

#7140, aired 2015-10-02 I'M JUST A "VILLE" $1600: Named for its abundance of ore, this Colorado city is the USA's highest incorporated city
#6704, aired 2013-11-07 AROUND THE USA $800: Is a marathon too short? Try a 100-mile course with a high point at 12,600 feet--the Leadville trail 100 run in this state
#6144, aired 2011-05-05 U.S. GEOGRAPHY $400: Leadville in the Rockies in this state is the USA's highest incorporated city
#3303, aired 1999-01-06 THE USA $800: At an altitude of about 10,200 feet, this Colorado city is the highest incorporated city in the USA
#2848, aired 1997-01-08 GUINNESS RECORDS $500: The highest incorporated U.S. city is Leadville in this state at an elevation of 10,152 feet

Final Jeopardy! Round clues (1 result returned)
#375, aired 1986-02-14 U.S. GEOGRAPHY: Geographic distinction of the city of Leadville, Colorado
Daryn was 0/3 on big clues and Ariana Grande has an appropriate song title, "thank u, next."

Was anybody else thrown off by the fact that
Spoiler
'lead' is not the name of an ore, really?
Tough one.

A FInal Jeopardy in 1986, and last seen in 2015, this is a Thing Worth Knowing.
Missed it today because I missed the significance of the height in the clue. Got close with Boulder.

I might have been able to say that I would have been thrown by that if I had ever heard of "Leadville" in the first place. So I was doubly doomed not to be able to get this one.

I wasn't able to think of a single U.S. city named for an ore proper.

I think US Grant was from one
Spoiler
(named for an actual ore of the metal in question),
although it's probably closer to 1,000' elevation than 10,000'.

Spoiler
The only one I could think of that is named after an ore is Galena, IL, which is most definitely not at 10,000 feet! Within the 30 seconds, I at least got on the right track by abandoning the notion that the city was named for an ore per se.
I guessed Silver City, NV. Geography and chemistry are my wheelhouse categories, so I'm a bit disappointed to not have solved this one...

I got it after about 15 seconds, but probably only because I live in Colorado. I agree the 'ore' designation made it more difficult, as I went at it from that angle, and Galena was the only city I could think of named for an ore. (Bauxite, Cinnabar?!?). When I finally focused on the 10,000+ feet, then it was clear to me what they were going for.

Galena, interesting. But alas I neither knew that fact about President Grant nor did I know "galena" was an ore. And if you asked me to say where Grant was from this Ohioan would name either of the Ohio places associated with him (Point Pleasant or Georgetown, Ohio).

Spoiler
I gather what they were really asking is, what is the highest elevation city in the US? A textbook case in parsing the whole clue... why did they mention the elevation specifically?
But even if you asked me that way, I wouldn't have known...

Well, Galena is where he was based at the time of the CIvil War. I wouldn't use "from" myself. It was my first thought too but yeah, 10,000 feet, so I went to Golden. I also don't like the phrasing of the clue, but the only way I might have got Leadville was if I had heard of it.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Figured the elevation meant Colorado, and happened to know of Leadville from bike and road racing, so was able to make the connection fairly quickly. I can see though how many people would never have heard of it.

Coryat $35600
47 R
0 W
DD 2/3
FJ :(

Low Coryat for 47/0 because I was only 1/6 on the $2000 clues (but it was LT). I gave up prematurely on three of those and one other (which I do too often on movie clues, just assuming I won't know them) so I missed out on a very gettable 50 R/$40k Coryat night. :(

On FJ... I guessed
Spoiler
Silver City
and counted myself wrong. Turns out that is the original name of the correct city. Purely coincidence, I can't claim to have known that before just now. Judges?

I was 4/5 in Starts & Ends with P, Music Legends, Canada, Gender-Free, American History, and "T" Birds.

Only $200 in "Our Home" and "& Native Land".

No guess on the top two Quotes (Archimedes = lever was new to me) but got the other three.

NHO "Lambda Award".

Tossed around gold, copper, silver, and iron in my head for five minutes and yielded no results. NHO the correct response, and apparently I'm not alone this time. What an awful clue for an obscure response.

Lach Trash: Duke Ellington, Glen Campbell. Also got the Orwell and 1930s DDs.

When the category was revealed, my brother jokingly answered our home town, knowing it was too obscure to possibly be the answer. We kinda' joked about that when the real answer was revealed. "What the heck is Leadville?" A quick Google search reveals... it's a random obscure town. My brother's random guess was surprisingly plausible after all .

I'm surprised to learn this is (apparently) not as well-known as I thought. I saw US Cities -> 10,000 feet, what's higher than Denver? -> Leadville and check with mining -> done. *shrug*

Congrats to Ryan on his win. Alex seemed to really like Mononita.

And yet, he still would have won if he had chosen the "bet small" option in his Stratton's Dilemma on FJ.

I'll be checking the box for "My incorrect response was Golden." Which is embarrassing since I participated in this thread less than 6 months ago that Myron mentions above:

When I saw the elevation in the clue, I immediately thought of Leadville, but I was troubled by the use of ore in the clue (and knowing that Galena was lead ore). I stuck with it, though, and was pleasantly surprised at the reveal.
